Pakistan can't afford to have bullet trains: Railway minister

Countries with more populations (higher density ) like Deutschland, Francaise, Italia need bullet trains much more than the area locating in icy northern peninsula.
Oh they need? Tell me, why does country like Italy (~300 000sq km2) need bullet trains?
Or why would Germany thats only 50ksqkm2 larger than Italy need to build whole new infra for fancy bullet trains?

Bullet trains are only useful in countries that are large and have very long distances between major urban center, like most of the worlds countries outside Europe. But most of them are too poor to build them.

You also seem not to understand that Finland is one the more larger European countries with 330 000km2

Railway can never rely on passenger trains to generate profits. Freight trains do that. Passenger trains are normally subsidised.

Saad Rafique has increased the number of Freight trains that Railway run but with our old tracks they can not run very fast and transporting goods from freight trains is taking more time than it should. Until and unless our tracks are upgraded first and freight train business is increased we should not be looking at projects like Bullet trains

+ i dont think current govt can complete the bullet train project before next general election so they better focus on more important aspects of railways

There must be either a big misunderstanding or misinterpretation. It just didn't not sound Chinese at all!

We don't laugh at our own brother in need, besides, China needs Pakistan as much as Pakistan needs China in this CPEC initiative.

Brother always remember that our enemies want to destroy our relationship. In the last two years America has spent hundreds of millions of dollars in the media houses of Pakistan. The Dawn newspaper is an American stooge and they have only written negative things about CPEC. But don't worry Brother the Army will take care of this filth soon. I wish I could teach the cockroaches a lesson myself.

“When we asked the Chinese about it, they laughed at us. We should consider the 160kmph train under CPEC as a bullet train. We can’t afford an actual bullet train, there’s no market for it,” the railway minister said.

Well that was rude, I am sure Chinese could have cleared doubts of Pakistani delegation more diplomatically.

A bullet train was a nonsensical idea to begin with. It speaks to the incredible stupidity and incompetency of our politicians that this is still being discussed.

If you are referring to the Stockholm to Gothenburg and Malmö project, the 2015 offer made by China Railway Construction was $17.1b, which was significantly lower than Swedish Transport Administration's estimate at $20.1b. Are you talking about another project?

No doubt HSR is not cheap and that is why it is not common even in Europe.
Might have been just a part, just remember the total amount was revised to 300B SEK.

He should have said that without fixing current railway network we cant think of going a further step, afford-ability thing comes quite later on.

My own opinion is that Pakistanis should have functioning railway so most of people can afford, and lower the cost of freight.
when Pakistanis accumulates enough capitals, you may build the high speed rail at anytime. The low speed rail can then be focused on freight. This is China's experience.

Exactly my point.

That's right, it doesn't change the fact that bullet trains were an idiotic idea for Pakistan. I would understand if we had the need for bullet trains and the economy to require and sustain them. We don't, and it would be an incredible waste of resources for a country like ours to spend on a bullet train. It makes sense for Japan, Europe, China and the US, but not for us.

And still I maintain, it speaks volumes of the stupidity of our politicians for not moving on from this fantasy.

Territory is an aspect but not primary consideration, population and population density is. Look, Finland has only less than 10 million, relatively, the three nations mentioned are about 70 millions. Bullet trains will have enough travellers for the operation and biz margin. Japan has 100 million, their bullet train runs well. Do it firstly, then the locals will feel its benefits. In China, 6 or 7 years ago, people are afraid of the ticket at too high price, but nowadays, we can't live without bullet trains, and the price is not problem at all.

.
it wasn't needed in the first place. those who would have afforded to travel in those trains could already afford air tickets.

Narrating his experience of negotiating with the Chinese over projects related to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, the minister said that things were not as rosy as they appeared to be.
“We will not buy a pen worth Rs2 for
Rs10.

any idea , which othet projects the minister talking about ?

Nawaz shareef before 2013 election said that if we came to power we will build railway tracks for bullet trains from Peshawar to Karachi. He's the same guy who says that we always fulfill our promises & now his servant is saying that we can't afford bullet trains. I won't be surprised if before 2018 election he again makes the same promise but with a different script.

Not that bullet trains are useless, but all these European countries already have HSR, and those are mostly used when visiting other cities and such, not commuting like in Japan for example.
