Pakistan can't afford to have bullet trains: Railway minister

Rasengan sb,

However, what he fails to take into account is that Dawn is a American/Indian mouth piece attacking all good things about Pakistan.

Doesnt Pakistan have a sedition law? They should borrow one from India, if they dont have one.

Any one plze tell me why bullet train so expensive thanks.

There are many factors that influence ‘Cost’ of any engineering project. Taking into account normal engineering considerations the main factors would be:

There rail track must be able handle the physical forces imposed on it by the heavy trains moving on it a high speed to ensure that the inertia and the centrifugal forces don’t cause the lines to rip off. Topography & the alignment of the track is extremely important because of the same reason, as high speed would cause the train to fly off the track if the lines are not dead level and perfectly aligned. Minimum turn radius considerations at such speeds would probably require completely new tracks altogether. You may have noted that trains normally slow down when crossing wide rivers. This is because; the wheels cause the bridge to vibrate. The vibration increases more than linearly with the trains' speed. Hence bridges need to be strengthened or new ones built.

At high speeds there would not be enough time to open & close road crossings, therefore viaducts will be required. One would also need to improve or build new train stations. Can you imagine the land acquisition cost of a 5,000 square meter (about 6,000 sq. yards) site in the middle of Lahore or Karachi?

Finally shape and propelling the train at 200 KM per hour is no joke, one would need specially designed engines & railway carriages and power lines. All of the above translates into ‘Giga bucks’.

Regret that not being a Railway Engineer, I seek you forgiveness if the above is not to your satisfaction.

Niaz sb,

Does Pakistan need large investments in railway for cargo. Wudnt it be better advised to develop its inland waterways, most of its big business and industries wud be right along the rivers.

If theres commission to be made, Pakistan will have the bullet train.

To Expensive to make Bullet Train

India is taking loan of $15 Billion from Japan to make a Bullet train 500-600 Km track only Peshawar to Karachi will cost $40-45 Billion

Add Commission and kick backs and cost will be $50-55 Billion

still better than buying planes and building airport plus other services also a country like Pakistan Bangladesh with big population and poor personal transportation and high ways.

Japan pledges loan of 12 billion only with 0.1% interest rate and rest paid by indian railway and state governments.
India already running semi-high speed talgo train...

Congrats on Semi high speed no one asked about it really i know you are obsessed with India Vs Pakistan Rather Compare yourself with China

What happened to Make in India? Importing from Italy and US and now Japan will give loan for HSR... Loan is a Loan for a country like India with big economy still taking loans

wow big achievements Congrats again

Bullett trains are for middle class and upper class . The Pakistani don't have enough such people to regularly use bullet train.

The cost and infrasucture to develope the system will bankrupt Pakistan if you tried to build it ith your resources or borrowed money/.

Finally bullett trains are needed for nations with vast geography like china or Russia or indeed india..... BUT Pakistan is a relative small nation............. so no real need for hyper ex[ensive bullet trains

I BELIEVE THE PAKISTANIS WHERE HOPING that the chinease would build and PAY FOR A BULLETT TRAIN as part of the CPEC development over next 10 years.
BUT chinease laughed this off as not feasible.
MORE importantly china will build road and train track for cargo and fuel movement of chinease goods and oil from the Arabian sea into gwader port then up into gilgit Baltistan by rail and road.

THE BULLETT TRAIN is luxury passenger........PAKLSTAN IS GHETTING cargo haulage lines to SHIFT CHINEASE GOODS & OIL ie freight trains

Japan is offering. India is taking or not depends on India that too after the feasibility report.

FYI- China was also in line for the same and offered not only the loan but at 25% discount.

Actually when Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Sahab said a blunder that we will make a bullet train in Pakistan, we all had a good laugh on PDF back those days talking about his nonsensical claim that it was simply not possible for Pakistan to afford such a high cost project with economy of around 170 billion dollars back then.

The Chinese did give an estimated quote of 67 billion dollars and all he had to do was to politely apologise to the people of Pakistan that he wasn't aware of the high costs before making a blunder

I think Bullet train is not feasible for us in present circumstances. If only our economy grows to something like over a trillion dollars, then may be we can talk about affording such luxuries

Pakistan Railways's top priority should be to upgrade its existing Main Lines of ML-1, ML-2, ML-3 and ML-4 and signal improvement to prevent accidents and when all this have been upgraded (costing between 20-40 billion dollars) then we can talk about bullet trains
