ISLAMABAD – Pakistan has become the first Associate Member of European Organisation for Nuclear Research – CERN among the Asian countries.

CERN Director General Dr Rolf Heuer on behalf of CERN and Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) Chairman Dr Ansar Parvez here on Friday signed the agreement for Associate Membership. The signing ceremony was witnessed by the prime minister, heads of scientific organisations, foreign diplomats and many other dignitaries. While talking to journalists in a press conference, the PAEC chairman said that the associate membership of Pakistan reflects the decades committed efforts of Pakistani scientists and engineers contributing to the scientific research and technological work at CERN.

He said that the relationship with the world leading research organisation would help motivate the budding scientists to build stronger scientific base of Pakistan. He said that when CERN opens associate membership for Non-European countries, Pakistan saw prospects of scientific engagements and applied for it. He said that Pakistan is playing a leading role in Pak-CERN collaboration for the last 20 years. He said that Pakistan is a responsible nuclear state and it is a great honor and landmark achievement in the history of Pakistan to become the office bearer of the organisation.

Dr Rolf said that Pakistan associate membership will allow Pakistani scientists, engineers and technicians to join CERN staff besides participating in CERN's career development programmes. He said that the membership will also permit Pakistan's industry to bid for CERN contracts which would open up opportunities for industrial collaboration based on advanced technologies. He said that CERN, like a catalyst, will mobilise the rich scientific and technological potential of Pakistani youth.

The PAEC chairman said that Pakistan's scientific community was introduced to CERN through Dr Abdul Salam in 1960's. A formal collaboration agreement between CERN and PAEC was signed in November 1994 for promoting scientific and technical cooperation in high energy physics, he said. Dr Ansar said that Pakistani scientists have contributed in various projects at CERN and participated in Large Hadron Collider experiments like CMS, ALICE and ATLAS. He said, “The experience gained by working in the world largest accelerators at CERN is helping our scientists and engineers in developing our own Linear accelerator for medical purposes.

Pakistan has formally become Associate Member of the prestigious European organization for nuclear research, CERN.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed by Director-General CERN Dr. Rolf-Dieter Heuer and Chairman Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission Dr. Ansar Parvez in Islamabad today.

The ceremony was attended, among others, by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister described it as the landmark moment in the development of science in Pakistan.

He thanked Director-General CERN for recognizing efforts, hard work and capabilities of scientists, engineers and technicians of PAEC and for allowing Pakistan to become part of the unique and leading institution of scientific research.

The Prime Minister said it is testimony of the fact that whenever provided an opportunity, people of Pakistan are capable of standing upto any international standard.

Nawaz Sharif reminded the scientific community of Pakistan that Associate Membership of CERN is not a goal but a means to pursue, acquire and achieve scientific and engineering knowledge and expertise. Our people must use this opportunity to interact closely with international community and bring back ideas and expertise and raise scientific and technological level of the country.

The Prime Minister said the membership also provides an opportunity to our industrialists and businessmen and companies can now participate in construction and engineering work carried out at CERN.

The Prime Minister said his Government is committed to well being and prosperity of the people. Pakistan is facing many challenges and we have to work hard to eradicate poverty from the country and raise living standards of the people. He said this objective can be achieved only through education and advancement in science and technology.

He expressed the confidence that relationship between Pakistan and CERN would open new avenues for our youth in science and engineering and they can now benefit from state of the art expertise available at CERN.

The Prime Minister directed Chairman PAEC to work closely with High Education Commission and the Ministry of Science and Technology to develop a comprehensive programme so that our youth can derive maximum benefit out of this opportunity.

Don't get me wrong but what's the use of being an associate member

Almost all Asian countries are involved with cErn but none are willing to become an associate member because of the annual fee they need to pay.I heard it's a hefty sum

Anyways congrats Pakistan

Pakistan on Friday beat India in the race to become an associate member of Cern (European Organization for Nuclear Research), the world's largest particle physics laboratory that recently found some evidence of "God particle".
A senior official of Cern had told TOI earlier in an exclusive interview in London that beauracratic red tape in India had slowed down the country's intentions of joining Cern as an associate member.

The guy didnt believe the news... the Official Interior ministry report was "fake" and so on..

Congratulations to Pakistan.

The official ministry of interior circular stated that it had already become a member of the CERN.

Whereas it just happened now :)

Yeah I remember that convo and how it was all about official sources. In that very spirit, let me post the official source from the CERN website itself, for our ever forever unruly border-mates.

CERN Director-General Rolf Heuer and the Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, Ansar Parvez, signed today in Islamabad, in the presence of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, a document admitting the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to CERN Associate Membership, subject to ratification by the Government of Pakistan.

"Pakistan has been a strong participant in CERN’s endeavours in science and technology since the 1990s," said Heuer. "Bringing nations together in a peaceful quest for knowledge and education is one of the most important missions of CERN. Welcoming Pakistan as a new Associate Member State is therefore for our Organization a very significant event and I'm looking forward to enhanced cooperation with Pakistan in the near future."

"It is indeed a historic day for science in Pakistan. Today's signing of the agreement is a reward for the collaboration of our scientists, engineers and technicians with CERN over the past two decades," said Parvez. "This Membership will bring in its wake multiple opportunities for our young students and for industry to learn and benefit from CERN. To us in Pakistan, science is not just pursuit of knowledge, it is also the basic requirement to help us build our nation."

The Islamic Republic of Pakistan and CERN signed a Co-operation Agreement in 1994. The signature of several protocols followed this agreement, and Pakistan contributed to building the CMS and ATLAS experiments. Pakistan contributes today to the ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb experiments and operates a Tier-2 computing centre in the Worldwide LHC Computing Gridthat helps to process and analyse the massive amounts of data the experiments generate. Pakistan is also involved in accelerator developments, making it an important partner for CERN.

The Associate Membership of Pakistan will open a new era of cooperation that will strengthen the long-term partnership between CERN and the Pakistani scientific community. Associate Membership will allow Pakistan to participate in the governance of CERN, through attending the meetings of the CERN Council. Moreover, it will allow Pakistani scientists to become members of the CERN staff, and to participate in CERN’s training and career-development programmes. Finally, it will allow Pakistani industry to bid for CERN contracts, thus opening up opportunities for industrial collaboration in areas of advanced technology.

European Union officials indicated last year that if Pakistan resumed executions, it could jeopardize a highly prized trade deal with the bloc.
An EU rights delegation warned it would be seen as a “major setback” if Pakistan restarted hangings.
PM lifts moratorium on death penalty

Now what happen....

Previously filthy TTP creatures used to strike at our back....
But this time they strike at our heart....
Whole Nation, Army and Politicians retaliate with rage and said that, we don't want any thing....
We are going to hang these filthy creatures of hell....
We want justice and revenge....

Result we got the deal....

We lost our children and beloved ones, because we forgot the values of our ancestors....
Our values taught us to live with dignity and die with honor....:pakistan:

My views are still pretty much the same....
it's not about race.....
even now....India is not willing to be a member bcuz it will have to pay 10.7million $ annually... same goes for China I guess....

as far as i remember, this matter was discussed some 6-8 months back also....

Being a member isn't a bad thing but the profits will be damm low as far as d investments r concerned

If u believe it's a positive step then I congratulate you again
no hard feelings :-)
