It really is a great news. And one does not become associate member of CERN for no reason. For those who dont know, CERN is leading facility on particle physics and employs one of the largest group of top physics scientists. Located on the border of Switzerland and France, its particle collider runs through both countries. CERN scientists create conditions in the collider which existed almost at the time of Universe creation (Big Bang). Sub Atomic particles of matter, anti-matter, and energy are regularly played with there. Particle physics is at the cutting edge of Science right now and this is where these guys are trying to unlock mysteries of Universe. Largest number of physics noble laureates work here. Pakistan's Noble laureate Dr Abdussalm worked in same field. His work which proved unification of Weak Nuclear Force with Electro-magnetic force (There are only 4 forces at work in Universe I.e. Gravity, Electromagnetic, Weak Nuclear Force ane Strong Nuclear Force. Science belives there existed only one force at the time of Big Bang and these forces branched out as energy reduced due to expansion of Universe. To prove it they need to create conditions which existed immediately after Big Bang. These conditions are created in particle colliders of which CERN is largest and most advanced. CERN also leads the research in finding 'Higgs Boson' also called Gods Particle, which can unlock mystry of creation of Universe.)
CERN is not owned by any state and several countries have their scientist working including Pakistan. Pakistan infact has a very long relationship with CERN. It is quite a presitigious and interesting work going on there. It indeed is an honour to be part of CERN and seems befitting for Pakistan as work of Dr Abdussalm was put to practicAl test and found to be correct. They did find the particle (I forgot the name) which he predicted in his theory thus proving unification of these forces and leading research to unification of strong nuclear force (they haven't succeded yet in uniting all of them yet). Energy required to combine these forces is enormous and some scientists actually expressed fear that world could come to an end when they experimented last year (or maybe a year before) to create the 'God's particle'.
I stumbled on this many years back it really is very amazing science. I have forgotton a lot but still it is no small feat. Congrats to Pakistan!
