KIA PRIDE was being marketed in Pakistan but the company stopped manufacturing. Sine 2009-2010 the company has started to market BMW imported from Germany.

. . .
Automatic transmission has been common in cars for much longer than 20 years...however many Western countries just weren't interested in them and they didn't sell well. As you said it is only maybe in the last 20 years they have become popular in Europe. Europeans due to high gas prices/taxes were used to their little compacts with high fuel efficiency so a manual was the natural way to go as automatics were less fuel efficient.

In the US gas has a history of being relatively cheap so automatics took off in popularity much much much earlier. I don't know when automatics began outselling manuals but it may be in the 1960's. There are plenty of people who have been driving for over 50 years and have NEVER driven a manual.

As automatics in the past decade or two have closed the gap in fuel efficiency compared to a manual more Europeans started switching over to them. So that's the main reason they have started to become popular.

Now all we have to do is convince Europeans that air-conditioning isn't evil.

True, agree with that. Automatics have been in vogue for much longer than 2 decades. But one good thing with MT is you tend to learn the basics of driving well. After driving MT I found very hard to adjust to AT. My left leg gets that phantom itch to step on some thing. If automatics becomes economical in India, ladies will have a field day running over every thing.

Its the same thing with Automatic climate control in India, we still have those freezer style AC in top models. But I did find americans love for sunroof/moon roof a bit awkward.

. .
Why the government does not allow some European brands like VW to enter and end this monopoly, but I guess they don't want any cuts in their commissions.

i have a moonroof in my car...and admittedly I open it maybe two times a year...and that is just to vent the car out a bit if it was sitting in the hot sun. So I have to agree it is basically useless.

When you say "freezer style" do you mean those slider bars that have red on one end and blue on the other?
