Pak. loses 7 billion by avoiding India goods

At least through Wagah things will be cheaper for people of punjab, kpk, ajk, gilget. So looks like this mafia import through Karachi and ship to northern Pakistan were 80% of most of consumers live. While making profit and taking advantage of ban on trade through Wagah but India gets benefit anyway.
Thanks for "outing" what I wanted to say. This fake ban is just licence for some gangsters to make billions. All this ban does is confers monoploy to some to make money by allowing importing from India through Dubai to Karachi to supply like you said 80% of the captive market in the north. If Wagah was opened the monopoly of Karachi would be broken and traders in K-PK, Punjab, AK, G-B would get piece of the cake. M2, M1 motorways would see huge increase in traffic.

I also think many Indian's - in fact I think millions of the middle class would love to see the "real Pakistan". I think the Lahore - Islamabad - Peshawar axis (precisely the M2/M1) motorway would recieve hordes of Indian tourists. It would be huge boost to hotel, transport industries. This idea occured after reading on the Sikhs who come to Hasan-Abdal evey year. But think about how many millions Pakistan could attract to Lahore, Taxila near Islamabad and Peshawar.

WTF at jewelry and diamond being to most imported items.

India is (one of if not the) biggest jewelery and processed diamond exporter in the world....and you are right next door.

It makes lots of sense thats the biggest part of India's exports to Pakistan informally (dont know about formally). Also relatively easy to send through dubai.

I would welcome this immensely. @Joe Shearer

LOL, we did not suffer a loss, we incurred higher cost for better quality products, the loss accrues to the seller who can't sell......India.

Pak. loses $7 bn. by avoiding India goods

Pakistan suffered a loss of about $7 billion in 2014 by importing items from other countries at a higher cost instead of sourcing them from India, according to a study by the New Delhi-based Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS).

The think-tank in the study, to be released this week, found out that the loss was substantial considering Pakistan’s GDP (nominal, 2015) was only about $270 billion. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to chair a meeting to review trade ties between India and Pakistan on Thursday.

Significantly, the RIS study’s findings are in line with the theme of Modi’s recent speech at Kozhikode (Kerala), where he called upon the people of Pakistan to fight a war on unemployment, poverty and illiteracy.

The RIS study — on ‘Costs of Non-Cooperation’ — covered 5,200 items. These included refined petroleum, palm oil, aviation spirit, motor vehicle parts, edible oil, cotton, milk powder, marine products, machinery as well as chemicals and allied products.

‘Costs of Non-Cooperation’ occurs when a country imports from the global market at prices higher than the price at which the same product is available from the regional market, and thereby incurs an additional foreign exchange expenditure on such imports, the RIS said.

Many products that Pakistan imported from third countries were at least three times more costly than the price of the same item from India in export markets, it added.

“The objective of the study is to show Pakistan that they can save on the foreign exchange front if they cooperate in South Asia,” said Ram Upendra Das, professor, RIS.

Pakistan is a net-importing nation with a trade deficit of $22 billion in 2015. In 2015, it imported around $44 billion, while it exported only items worth $22 billion. India-Pakistan trade is far below potential and negligible.

Trade between both the nations in 2015-16 was just $2.6 billion, while according to various estimates the annual bilateral trade has the potential to surpass $20 billion if both countries cooperate and remove barriers and restrictions. Currently, most of the trade happens indirectly through Dubai, Singapore, port of Bandar Abbas (Iran).

On a lighter note, I already have over half-a-dozen invitations in Lahore itself. And I would love to potter around Taxila, Mohenjodaro and Harappa. Looks like these will remain on my bucket list, unless I dress up as a gangster. A Clifton bungalow is, I believe, optional these days, no longer mandatory.

Indians seem to be very much worried about Pakistan economy if it blocks Bollywood or does not buy Indian things.

We are doing something right here,

Of course you are. You are hitting the bania where it hurts him the most. And you can see him crying all the way to the Bank of Beijing.

When you have some leisure time, perhaps when you let the keyboard cool down to red heat, you might like to look up the India-China trade figures.

I think India can supply all these goods to rest of SAARC nations, Bangladesh, Bhutan etc to cover the loss. Forget Pakistan..................if Pakistani market absorb 7 billion dollar loss without hick ....imagine the potential of Pakistani market....

. .
Pakistan does not feel this loss of 7 Billion. Give this trade to Pakistan for 6 months then take it away.

Lets send these goods to Pakistan through Afghanistan. Afghans will get leverage over Pakistan.

did we just meet the Indian finance minister, you sir definitely deserve it

.
We saved 7 billion from not being spent on Raw funded terrorists

It doesn't penetrate easily, does it?

You are buying goods worth x to the Indians who want to sell it. You aren't paying x, you are paying x + $7.0 bn. So the Indians get their x anyway. But somebody else buggers you and takes $7.0 bn. for the pleasure of it. The money going to R&W is not affected. The money coming out of you is more to the extent of $ 7.0 bn.

With two hundred million population you can absorb lot more hiccups but over a period of time that 7 billion becomes substantial.

Logic works only for those that are logical :)

We are simply fed up with this dual-face India. So she can save some crocodile tears for 300+ million poor living in India who need food urgently.

On one hand she is doing everything possible to undermine Pakistan and its economy and on the other hand showing "concern" about us. Just like a day before they were worried that banning bollywood movies in Pakistan will result in 70% loss for Pakistani film industry and what not.

Ah, we are so touched!

No sir, if "Bania", as you call it, cries and is worried about us, we are doing something right!

That has most probably to do something with $4 billion, which have gone from Pakistan to India in the last few years during the tenure of this self-serving PM of Pakistan.

haha its funny how hindusatanis have crawled out of their pits after fictitious sir g kal strikes...there are on every thread nice to see you indians Hello!

As I said earlier, in the same vein, it is marvellous how you have captured our essential duplicity and unreliability in a few terse sentences. Brilliant.
