At that altitude, we do not need to trespass Soviet borders and the Soviets had no fixed ideas on the extent of our photographic capabilities, which usually is greater than what their analysts explained to their leaders. We would present photos of X resolution of what they had, they would raise their estimates of what we can do, then on the next summit or secret meeting, we would present X+1, and they would raise their estimation of what we can do -- again. And so on.I heard that all the SR needed to do is to fly a route next to the Soviet costal region, then it would take pictures. In some cases didn't the Foxhound fire at the SR-71?
As for shooting at the -71? Yes, -71 pilots often reported seeing missile contrails rising in altitude before dropping back to Earth.
