PAF on the Offensive - 1971 War

Austria, Hungary, Romania, Italy and Japan...............They were not all alone. The mistakes and blunders of Hitler made Germany collapse prominant among them Moscow and Stalingrad campaigns.

Besides Japan the rest were mere statistics and a useless bunch. Moscow was a proper defeat but Stalingrad was more Germany losing out because of Hitler's obstinate stance than Russian expertise.

Regarding this thread topic, how many aircraft did PAF have in bangladesh prior to the war?

I think no of aircraft is mentioned in op. You can visit Aeuronaut blog otherwise.

While the discussion surrounds the air war aspect, some idiots just to salvage some pride will drag in the overall war scenario. Anyways, here's a classic image of how the PAF mainly equipped with obsolete F-86 Sabres gave the IAF a bloody nose. The MiG-21, in 1971 was a prime fighter, here it's been shot down by the humble Sabre.

So pointing to facts like "Pakistan lost the war- badly" is trying to "salvage some pride"? That's some pretty crazy logic there but whatever floats your boat.

Anyway, in regards to what you have said, if you want to stick to very arbitrary one-off situations, in the days before BVR, off bore-sight heat seeking missiles and HMDS the difference between fighters was negligible. Whilst you call the Sabres "obsolete" and MiG-21s a "prime fighter" the actual disparity in performance was almost nil so of course there was the opportunity for both sides to inflict losses on the other.

If you want to talk about a real "bloody nose" then look at the case of flying officer Normal Jit Singh Sekhon. Flying a Gnat (arguably far more outdated than the F-86 at the time) he was able to defend Srinagar Air Base from 6 Sabres single-handedly and is the only non-Indian Army personal to have been awarded the Param Vir Charka (posthumously).

Yes and by your logic a ww2 spitfire can also down a mig 21 and is not obsolete in a dogfight with it. As for Singh sahab pvc, no doubt he put up a brave fight but all of our f86's delivered the munitions on the runway and got away with it and his plane was also destroyed. Not a scratch was suffered by paf in that attack and the loses were on IAF.

Tell me something, when we talk about say WW-2, is the discussion confined to Hiroshima and Nagasaki or there are other aspects to it..... talk about 1971 war and the Indian buck stops on either Longewala or the fall of Dacca.
The Indian members are not keen to accept or digest any other battle accounts from this war.
Regarding the subject, like the F-104 in 1965, the MiG-21 had the advantage in speed and could disengage and escape from subsonic F-86s. IAF brought in the MiG as top cover after the failure of the SU-7s.
While the heroics of F/O Nirmal Singh must be acknowledged but these scenes were often repeated in the Eastern sector and you may want to look up the story of young F/O Shams, who lived to tell the tale.
And if you want to know what ''bloody nose'' really means then read about Flg Off Man Mohan Singh in Kaiser Tufail's narrative ,

The disparity between a Spitfire and a MiG-21 and a Sabre and MiG-21 are rather more stark wouldn't you say? ;)

AFAIK the F/O was able to shoot down 1 F-86 and damage a second was he not?

A fair point, however how often do we (in the West or elsewhere) praise the individual actions of Axis officers in specific missions/battles? It is about the overall war effort and that narrative.

As they say, "history is written by the victors".

I made a point as per your flawed logic. Check the specs of mig 21 and f86 and then come back. As for your other claim, it is just ridiculous, name the pilot he shot down. The fact was that our planes completed their mission before Singh came into action. He was shot down. He did not even score a hit on our sabres let alone shot it down. In the West , do we not hear about Nepolean, Erwin Rommel, Yamato, Von meinstein, talk about air aces and tank aces of ww2, The top places are occupied by Germans and are praised. You seem to be playing too much cod.

As if Niazi did any better . Biggest Surrender in the history after WW2 .
He was sent to fight insurgents who indulged in gorilla warfare he did his best to contain the rebellion. He didn't surrender to the rebels. An Indian soldier can never question our bravery, we choose not to spill our blood for traitors on that particular day.

This is the living example of why i don't like to quote Indians anymore. This is a defense forum but people like you think it's a circus. This comment puts other defense enthusiasts here to shame. I would really like the mods here to devise a clear cut policy about people who just comment for the sake of fun or to start a troll bait.
