The Catholics have the Vatican. And the other Christian sects have official leadership that are worldwide in scope, from the Anglican Church to the Mormons. However, there are no equivalents in Islam.

So the question is: If there is a central religious and moral authority in Islam, and since Osama bin Laden is seemingly a devout Muslim, would the attack on US on Sept 11, 2001, been possible?
