Opposition resume anti-Musharraf protests

MQM is caught on video and the as for the Lawyer they had nothing to do with the violence.
Please, share the video with us, showing MQM.
I have certainly seen videos showing violent mob damaging public and private properties.
Even the violent lawyers were caught on tape beating those who refused to be part of this insanity.
Karachi was a big city and the mob of Iftikhar and Aitizaz was not big enough to intimidate the Karchities by threat of violence.

Pakistan's anti-Musharraf protests continue

Thu May 31, 11:37 AM ET

Thousands of Pakistani lawyers and opposition party supporters burned effigies of President Pervez Musharraf and his allies Thursday over the suspension of the country's top judge.

The protests were the latest in a series to rock the country since military ruler Musharraf removed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on March 9 over alleged misconduct.

About 2,000 lawyers held a rally in Dera Ghazi Khan, a town in central Punjab province, and torched effigies of Musharraf and his ally Altaf Hussain, chief of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, the ruling party in Karachi.

Lawyers gave angry speeches blaming Musharraf and Hussain for political clashes in Karachi on May 12 which left more than 40 people dead when Chaudhry tried to hold a rally there, witnesses said.

Some 3,000 lawyers, opposition activists, teachers, doctors and women's rights activists marched in Lahore and tore down hoardings of Musharraf and other government figures in front of the provincial assembly.

Lawyers boycotted courts in protest at the treatment of Chaudhry and chanted "Go Musharraf Go", "Musharraf dog" and "The war shall continue till the independence of judiciary".

Rallies were also held in Multan, Bahawalpur, Peshawar and several other Pakistani cities.

Thousands cheer Pakistan's suspended judge as he travels to protest rally

The Associated Press
Saturday, June 16, 2007

FAISALABAD, Pakistan: Thousands of people chanting "Down with dictatorship" cheered Pakistan's suspended chief justice as he drove through the country to attend a rally Sunday criticizing the military-led government.

Many lawyers and opposition supporters have joined street protests against President Gen. Pervez Musharraf since March 9, when he ousted top judge Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry for alleged misconduct.

Chaudhry has appealed his suspension before the Supreme Court, turning himself into a rallying point for political parties seeking the restoration of democracy.

On Saturday, crowds cheered Chaudhry in towns and villages as he drove from Islamabad toward the industrial city of Faisalabad, about 250 kilometers (150 miles) to the south.

An estimated 20,000 people turned out in Chakwal, a city near the halfway mark, to welcome the judge.

Hundreds of vehicles filled with supporters joined the motorcade along the route, slowing its progress, and it was unclear when the judge would reach Faisalabad, where organizers expected another big crowd on Sunday.

At Chakwal, one of Chaudhry's lawyers demanded that Musharraf resign, saying he had harmed democracy and the judiciary.

"Our struggle is for the independence of the judiciary," Ali Ahmad Kurd told reporters, adding that "we are confident that we will succeed, the people of Pakistan will succeed, and this day is not far away."

The furor over Chaudhry's ouster has presented Musharraf with his worst political crisis since he seized power in a 1999 coup by toppling the government of then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Musharraf's term as president expires in October, and he has said he will ask lawmakers to grant him another five years.

However, opposition leaders insist that he seek a new mandate only after parliamentary elections due by January in which they expect to make gains.

They are also pressing him to give up his dual role as head of the army — the real source of his power.

Despite facing criticism at home, Musharraf still enjoys the support of his fellow generals and of Washington, which has given Pakistan billions of dollars (euros) in return for its help against al-Qaida and the Taliban.

U.S. officials are insisting that the parliamentary elections should be free and fair, but have put little public pressure on Musharraf to restore full civilian rule.

Judge rallies support in Pakistan heartland

FAISALABAD, PAKISTAN

18-Jun-07

THOUSANDS of lawyers and opposition activists greeted Pakistan's suspended chief justice as he travelled to the country's heartland on the weekend in a campaign against the president's move to sack him.

Supporters of suspended Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry waited through the night as his convoy took more than 20 hours to reach the industrial city of Faisalabad from the capital Islamabad, a journey that normally takes four hours.

Chaudhry and a convoy of lawyers and opposition supporters waving flags from their cars made several stops in sun-baked farming towns of Punjab province on their way to Faisalabad.
