Nearly 4,000 army soldiers killed in last 12 years: AK Antony - India - DNA

Nearly 4,000 soldiers have been killed in the country after the Kargil operations in 1999 while more than 390 Army troops have committed suicide in the last three years, Lok Sabha was informed on Monday.

In another written reply in Lok Sabha, defence minister AK Antony said more than 25,000 junior commissioned officers and jawans have proceeded on pre-mature retirement in the last three years.

"530 soldiers were martyred during Kargil War under operation Vijay. 3,987 soldiers have been killed afterwards during the years 2000-2012," he said.

The Indian Army is deployed in counter-insurgency and counter terrorist operations in Jammu and Kashmir and northeastern states for over two decades. In addition, they are also guarding the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir.

On suicides in the force, Antony said, "A total of 394 Army personnel committed suicide between 2009 up to November 20, this year."

Recently, the suicide by a jawan in an armoured unit in Samba in J-K had led to a face-off between officers and soldiers after which a detailed court of inquiry was ordered.

Antony said in last three years, 25,063 Army personnel have opted for pre-mature retirement.

"However, reasons for seeking premature retirement cannot be attributed to stressful working environment," the minister said.

As per the figures provided by the Ministry, 7,499 personnel took premature retirement in 2009, 7,249 in 2010 and 10,315 in 2011.

To a query on number of human rights violation cases against Army personnel, Antony said a total of 169 complaints have been received in the last three years of which 162 were found to be false.

He said in 2009, 79 complaints were received from areas including the northeast, Jammu and Kashmir and other states and all of them were found to be false.

Of the 90 complaints in the two subsequent years, 83 were found to be false and seven complaints were pending, he said.

"Five complaints of 2010 and one complaint of 2011 are subjudice and one complaint is under process," he said.

Majority of the complaints have been filed from Jammu and Kashmir and northeastern states where the Army is deployed for counter-terrorism operations.

I don't think so sir- 4000 in TWELVE years. I have heard much higher figures of PA deaths from WoT but AFAIK the PA/GoP doesn't release official figures of deaths and such so it is pure guesswork but my guess would be the PA has suffered much higher casualties in the same period.

Its the worlds tuffest and at the same time easiest job to be a soldier .

Sir, What YOU have heard and what is reality are two different things....PA is involved in full scale war for the last several; years.
One could argue, what suicide figures or premature retirement figures have you heard about in the PA....but that's not the topic here. !!

Mate, I wasn't the one that brought the PA into this. But anyway, Like you say, the PA is fighting a full scale war so the PA's deaths have got to be higher than 4,000 in the last 12 years. Btw this 4,000 figure of the IA includes combat deaths, suicides, accidental deaths etc so all IA deaths in the last 12 years not just suicides or just combat deaths-everything.

Look at the success ratio. Kashmir insurgency is in total control. Even our enemies dont think that Kashmir is going anywhere except India. Khalistan moment finished. Pakistan is struggling for existence. They neither can handle Pakistan Talibaan nor US drone attacks on their citizens.

No war, but 4000 soldiers killed since 1999
| Nov 26, 2012, 11.57 PM IST

NEW DELHI: Without going to war, India has lost close to 4,000 soldiers in counterinsurgency operations as well as in manning high-altitude areas like Siachen in the last 12 years since the 1999 Kargil conflict with Pakistan. Moreover, over 100 soldiers continue to commit suicide every year.

Defence minister A K Antony, in a written reply in Lok Sabha on Monday, said that while 530 soldiers were martyred during Operation Vijay in 1999, another 3,987 have been killed between 2000 and 2012.
The number of soldiers being killed in counter-insurgency operations in both Jammu and Kashmir and the north-east has been steadily declining over the last decade with the Army achieving a much better ``kill ratio'' versus the militants.

But suicide and fragging (to kill a fellow soldier) cases continue to remain as high as ever. Around 1,020 soldiers have committed suicide just since 2003. Disclosing the figures, Antony said while 96 soldiers had committed suicide in 2009, the figures stood at 115 in 2010, 102 (2011) and 81 till now this year.

As reported by TOI earlier, three ugly face-offs between officers and jawans have also been reported in the 1.13-million-strong Army over the past one year. This is a clear indicator of the declining standards of leadership and discipline in the Army, where jawans are no longer willing to be humiliated by their officers, as well as the stressful working conditions in the force.

The stand-off between officers and jawans of an armoured corps unit at Samba in J&K had been triggered after a solider had committed suicide on August 8. The one in eastern Ladakh's Nyoma sector in May had ended in a violent clash between officers and jawans of the 226 Field Artillery Regiment, leaving the unit commanding officer, two majors and two jawans hospitalized with limb fractures, bruises and other injuries.

Also, 25,063 soldiers have also proceeded on pre-mature retirement during the last three years. ``However, reasons for seeking pre-mature retirement cannot be attributed to stressful working environment,'' said Antony, who added that government had been continuously taking steps to reduce stress among soldiers after undertaking a number of studies.

But the parliamentary standing committee on defence has repeatedly criticized the MoD for taking only piecemeal steps instead of totally revamping existing mechanisms to deal with stress and other problems faced by soldiers.
