NATO Shifts Supply Lines Away From Pakistan To Central Asia

no infact we will not loose the only leverage against us ..... we will play double then ..... we will ask china to pressurize russia over routes and off-course atleast 50% of routes will remain with pakistan they cannot shift it all to uzbik ......... now it all depends to our top brass of army and top leadership how they handle it
russia is still the big brother.......................China cannot order or presure them.
say good bye to NATO for good

I don't think people should make a big deal out of it. This is just US's way of showing that if need arises, they have an alternative route to fall back upon. Just the usual bullying in the backdrop of recent blockade and strike against drone attacks. The usual route through Pakistan will still continue, unless suddenly GOP grows up a really big pair of ****s.

However, as it is edivent from some of the posters here, GOP is/will be also worried that if US decides to discard Pakistani route, that will be a ominus sign of increased scope of the WOT inside Pakistan. The usual anti-US rants aside, no one wants to piss uncle Sam off yet (at least not as of now).

As a Indian, I too wish that the Nato supply route should be lifted out of Pakistan, for our own good.

The move was expected.. saves risk and is good for the central asian countries.. also serves as a platform for NATO-Russian co operation.

From one side good news that they are shifting their supply line from Pakistan but from another side bad because US will not completely shift and his dependence over Pakistan for supply remains prior as it was.

We discussed these issues in past in another thread related to supply routs, USA economical situation will not allow transfer of supply line from Pakistan because where he bargained only with Pakistan then using NDN they have to bargain with more than 3 countries, commission, expenditures, logistic cost will increase to thrice from present logistic cost from PAKISTAN.

USA/NATO can't find shorter rout except Pakistan. What about PAK-USA relations, changing with times & once there need then relations also will be reshaped. If US actually want not to increase logistic support then surely settlement of mutual problems will solve where US has more interests than Pakistan.
Ordinary thinking that US has to shift supply routs from Pakistan this & that but we have to understand things are not based over willing but needs.
We must clearly accept that issue is DRONES but not SUPPLY LINE.
If USA want secure rout then he has to decrease violation generated by Drones attacks.
If he want to ignore problematic fact then go ahead with NDN.

I think its good business opportunity for central Asian states.. The supplies includes food rations, medicines and fuel.. So the fuel from Caspian sea can be used and the other items procured from Europe or central Asian states and can be transported using existing rail network till Afghan border...

Safer... smoother.. better...

Guys this is Pakistan headache, not India.

Yup. exactly.. but it opens a whole new window for the Afghanistan.. if ever a mechanism gets going like that the co operation between Central asian states and Afghanistan will grow and the relationship inter governmental will automatically increase. There will be infrastructure upgrades for the supply routes and these will be transformed into good trade route once the country becomes stable..

.
Actually it's a US headache not a Pakistan headache - it's the US that needs this and other supply lines to simply survive there, Pakistan may have commercial gain, but also security loss - whereas for US it's survival.

I always thought it was the other way around..It is that Pakistan wants that any peace deal in Afghanistan between Taliban and US should brokered through Pakistan and India should be kept away from the Afghan solution..because any other way it sees a rise of hostile Afghanistan on its western borders.

Isnt thats why Mullah Baradar was arrested because he was in secret negotiations with Karzai.

Yaaar no deal can be brokered by sidelining Hakkani network, which is one of the most influential group in Afghanistan. No Hakkani network in talks = No peace in Afghanistan. And you might know that it is a very pro-Pakistani entity. Hence Americans need Pakistan in order to achieve complete peace and stability in Afghanistan so that they can pull out their troops.

Relax people, this is all much ado about nothing.

The last thing in the world NATO wants is to rely on Russia. Pakistan is 1000 times preferable (and arm-twistable) than Russia.

Also, the Uzbeks kicked out the Americans precisely because of Russian pressure.

.
However, despite all the advantages of the Azerbaijan-Turkmenistan air corridor, it is still necessary to keep other options open. Diversity of supplies is important and given the dynamic political situation in the region, it is necessary to avoid relying on any single route, and therefore to diversify the NDN. The Russian-Central Asian route has to be retained. While the Russian position is important for all the Central Asian states, especially in regard to NATO-related issues, the addition of a Baku-Turkmenistan air route to the ISAF supply chain would allow the United States and NATO to develop better alternative routes for sending supplies to Afghanistan.

The above quote from he link Spark had put up -- note even the NDN is problematic -- However the US may want to spin it's presence in Afghanistan and the role of supplies to that venture - truth is that US is a creek without a paddle and so if the Pakistan route is not good, we should wish the US well and let her go her way
