I grew up in China too in Tianjin which is a northern city. Two families including my cousins and their family shared our house together but then we made more money, got better jobs and most of us are in Australia now. My grandma and cousin is still in China and they all have nice houses in the city but grandmas house is on the third level and there is no elevator so its hard for her to climb the steps everyday (almost 90).

When i grew up in China in the 80s and 90s. There was street markets everywhere where we lived but now the government has banned them. Now things are more expensive but still affordable but meat in particular is quite expensive.
