I thought Syria was a socialist presidential republic ruled by the secular Baath party and led by a medical doctor? why would they care about religion?

Syria might be, but Syrians are not. 75% of them are Sunni Muslims and they don't like to be ruled by the minority.

Do you think all this mayhem would be going on if their leader was a Sunni? I seriously doubt it, and even if their was public protests against the leader no Arab country would support it. Just like Hosni Mubarak in Egypt.

1st of all it's not muslims (feelings on behalf of the general muslim people) but muslims as in US-backed paid supporters, aka traitors.

just like when the US which frequently uses 'international' doens't mean the world but means only itself and it's western and puppet allies.

I definitely think that Assad cares his country more than his personal assertion of power, he wants to bring change to improve country, but the West only wants to enslave his country like they did in Afghanistan/Iraq/Libya.

Thus i simply can't see how they can get along.
