Ultimately, the devout religionist performing an act of piety to his god is far less disruptive and dangerous than public nudity and drunkenness. We associate nudity with sex and everyone wants sex, correct ? We associate alcohol intoxication with festivities and everyone want to be happy, correct ? But not many want to pray.I agree those who want to pray should look for clean and quiet place to concentrate well . what do you think about public display of nudity and drinking at public places ? It don't gather unnecessary attention of crowds and give this impression as in 'I am modern than thou' and very little about genuine modernity. A guy praying at one corner of garden or street will not bring as much trouble as a guy who is drunk but still he has freedom
But the issue is not about making comparisons of the levels of 'offensiveness' between acts but whether public displays of religiosity is necessary. Do you NEED to pray in public, in other words, does your god demand your acts of devotion to be noticeable by the local people ? Does Christianity require Christians to wear symbols of Christianity ? Believe it or not -- no. Christians displays symbols such as carrying the Bible or wearing the cross by choice, not from godly commandments.
When you are in a public area, temporarily you are allowed a great deal of autonomy over a piece of that public area that you physically occupy. You can sit, stand, dance, lie down, or even pray to your god. But just as the alcoholic have the freedom to get inebriated in private or in public, you have equal freedom to perform your religious devotions in private or public. Does the alcoholic NEED to get drunk in public ? If he says 'Yes', then naturally we would feel the man is short a few brain cells. So what do you think people who do not share your religion thinks of you if you say that you NEED to pray in public when there are no godly expectations to do so ?
