Musharraf is my ideal: Hindu cadet

ISLAMABAD: A Hindu cadet Danesh on Saturday said President General Pervez Musharraf was his ideal leader and personality inspiring him to join the Pak Army.

He observed this on the occasion of passing out parade of the 114 Long Course, 28th Graduate Course and 33rd Integrated Course.

Talking to APP, he said President Musharraf had “all the qualities that a great leader should possess”.

It was General Musharraf’s personality, which he idealised. He added it was a matter of happiness and pleasure for him and his whole family to have been selected as an officer in the Pak Army, and would work with dedication for the sovereignty and defence of the motherland.

Replying to a question, he said he would also suggest his brothers to join the Pak Army if they could get through all the screening tests, interviews necessary for induction in the army.

“It is my country, and I would serve it to the best of my capabilities and energy to bring a good name to it.” “We live here as brothers,” he said referring to the prevailing spirit of harmony and tolerance in the country.

“It never occurred to my mind that I belonged to a religion other than Islam,” the cadet proudly added.

Earlier, he, along with his parents, called on Vice Chief of Army Staff General Ahsan Saleem Hyat and exchanged pleasantries and had informal talk with him during a brief meeting.

Danesh was born in the district Tharparker in 1978 and passed FSc from Government Muslim College Abbottabad.

The Pakistan military has had Christians and Hindus serve within its ranks before; although there are less Christians serving within the Air Force today than there were back in the 1950s, '60s and '70s.

Pak army recruits first Hindu cadet

Islamabad: Pakistan army has recruited a Hindu for the first time in its nearly 60-year-old history, months after it commissioned a Sikh youth. Danesh formally donned army colours at a parade yesterday along with fellow recruits.
Danesh, who hails from Tharparker in rural Sindh bordering Rajasthan, said he was inspired by Pakistan president General Pervez Musharraf to join the forces. “President Musharraf has all the qualities that a great leader should possess,” he was quoted as saying in te state-run APP agency.
To a question, he said “It is my country, and I would serve it to the best of my capabilities and energy to bring a good name to it.” “We live here as brothers. It never occurred to my mind that I belonged to a religion other than Islam,” he said.
Minorities in Pakistan are allowed to sit in all examinations, including the one conducted by Inter Services Selection Board, but only a Sikh has been selected for the army service since the country’s inception. However, many Christians serve in the army.
Harcharan Singh of Nankana Sahib became the first Sikh in the country to get into the Pakistani armed forces last December. PTI

Even though we should be appreciating this but we shouldn't be proud of this. India is too much ahead of us as far as integration of soldiers from other relgions goes.

numerically there are more minorities in india than there are in Pakistan. 13% percent of all indians are muslims...add to this christians and sikhs.

In Pakistan the total sum of all minorities ( christians, sikhs hindus ) is not more than 5 %....furthermore vast majority of them live in areas which are not traditional hunting grounds for Pakistan Army etc...i.e. muslims from that area are not in PA let alone non muslims.

Musharraf happy to have Hindus in assemblies, Sikhs in Pak Army

Lahore, Dec 9 (ANI): Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has said that he had done a lot for the minorities, including Hindus, Christians and Sikhs, living in his country. Substantiating his claim, he said that while Hindus were elected in different assemblies, Sikhs served in the Pakistan Army.

"I have no problem in interacting with Hindus, Christians and other minorities. We have Hindus in our assembly and Sikhs in our army," the Daily Times quoted him as saying in a recent interview with an Indian TV news channel.

Referring to his recent visit to a Hindu temple in Karachi, he denied that he had visited the temple to send a message to India.

Musharraf further said in the interview that Indian National Congress president Sonia Gandhi was a person who, according to him, could play a "major role" in resolving disputes between Pakistan and India.

The Pakistani establishment was fully onboard for a solution to outstanding issues, he said and added: "We (Pakistan and India) know what the solution to the Kashmir, Siachen and Sir Creek issues is. Siachen issue was so easy that it can be resolved tomorrow, and similar is the case with Sir Creek. We are open about these issues."

Musharraf said that the Kashmir dispute could be resolved by making the Line of Control (LoC) irrelevant. "Let's come to a resolution and give it any name, but the ingredients must be clear and one of the most important ingredients, Kashmir's internal security, should be in the hands of Kahmiris only," he said.

To a question about what he thought of Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and whether he wanted him to visit Pakistan, Musharraf said that he rated Singh high, and said: "I would like him to visit Pakistan tomorrow, but the visit must be fruitful".

"There should be some substantive progress as a result of his visit, and there should be some breakthrough ... if not a major breakthrough," he added. (ANI)

Why is this a news ?

Because Pakistan is generally, and quite incorrectly portrayed in the international media as a state where prejudice to the minorities has a state sanction.

There may be some people in the government who are bigoted but not all. It is really the those who used to go to Zia's tomb each year and vow to continue his agenda. However it is not true for the majority. You will see what happens to MMA in the next election.

You are however entitled to your opinion. Lets agree to disagree.
