Moviegoers rejoice: Pakistan to get 1,000 cinema screens

Moviegoers should rejoice as the government is planning to increase the number of cinema screens from 127 to 1,000.

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said that more cinema screens will create 20,000 jobs and give a boost to the film industry.

Pakistan welcomes any joint venture in the arena of exchange of films and co-productions, he said.

Chaudhry met with the US Chargé d Affaires Paul Jones on Tuesday. The two agreed to boost cultural cooperation revival of Pakistani films. The revival of the cinema would not only provide entertainment to the people, but would also generate economic activity, he remarked.

He further added that media was enjoying unprecedented freedom in Pakistan, and the current government believes in freedom of expression

Trailer of 'Pinky Memsaab' shows bittersweet tale of two worlds

1826908-pinky-1539674161-657-640x480.jpg

KARACHI: Although off to an erratic start, Pinky Memsaab‘s trailer begins with answering a very important question – how Hajra Yamin’s character got the nickname Pinky. “Bachpan se, meri gaal na laal tamaatar hua karte thay. Bas jee, parh gaya mera naam… Pinky (As a kid, my cheeks were tomato red. And so, I became Pinky),” narrates Yamin.

pinky1-1539673151-e1539673215229.png

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s speak of the more serious parts. Yamin’s character is seen married off to a village guy but due to financial constraints, she moves to Dubai, to work as a maid. And that’s where the second lead Kiran Malik, who plays a Dubai-based socialite named Mehr, comes in.

pinky3-1539673495-e1539673532438.png

The trailer shows the transition from Pinky’s village life to Mehr’s lavish lifestyle in a subtly comical way. The Maan Jao Na star is seen waiting at the airport for hours, holding a name board until Santosh the chauffeur (Sunny Hinduja) finally comes to pick her up.

pinky2-1539673339-e1539673393600.png

PHOTO: SCREENGRAB

Then, begins the atypical friendship between Pinky and her memsaab(Mehr). Clips of Mehr teaching Pinky how to set the table, speak English, put on makeup, wear certain clothing – all the basics – are shown throughout the trailer. It even shows how Mehr’s friends confuse Pinky as her sister.

pinky5-1539673765-e1539673849814.png

PHOTO: SCREENGRAB

However, in between these ‘happier’ moments, snippets of the bitter relationship Mehr has with her husband Hasan (Adnan Jaffar) are also displayed; including hints of abuse, jealousy and carelessness. This negativity portrayed in Mehr’s life is probably the reason why the bond between the two females had formed, as she finds a kind of escape in her kinship with Pinky.

pinky6-1539674051-e1539674095175.png

PHOTO: SCREENGRAB

Overall, Pinky Memsaab is a story of two different worlds in the form of Pinky and Mehr. It entangles the lives of the four characters quite aptly, making for a thought-provoking tale. The concept, as Mehr narrates it, seems to be “Kuch cheezen door se bohot achi lagti hain, per paas jao… toh woh baat rehti hi nahi. (Some things look very admirable from afar, but when you come closer, it’s just not the same.”

Pinky Memsaab is all set to hit theatres on December 7, 2018.

Bilal Lashari and Ammara Hikmat’s multi-starrer, Maula Jatt finally has a release date. The film, marred by controversy over the last year, is finally making progress as a teaser is soon to be dropped as well.

The makers of the 1979 hit rendition took to social media and shared that the film is all set to release on Eidul Fitr next year.

The Legend of Maula Jatt stars Mahira Khan, Fawad Khan, Hamza Ali Abbasi and Humaima Malick in pivotal roles. Ali Azmat and Gohar Rasheed will also be seen in the film.

The film will see Fawad and Hamza take on the iconic characters of Maula Jatt and Noori Natt, respectively. Mahira will play Mukkho Jatti – the love interest of Maula Jatt.

The film was set to be a reboot version of the iconic Maula Jatt (1979), however, turns out it is a continuation of Nasir Adeeb’s series instead.

The Legend of Maula Jatt will release in Pakistan and China simultaneously

“This film will connect with an international audience as much as our core audience,” shared director Bilal Lashari

According to a press release, China has a limited quota for foreign films and so, only a handful of movies make the cut after thorough scrutiny by the Chinese regulatory authorities. Till date, a few Hollywood movies (such as Spider Man 2, Captain America, X Men and Jurassic World) have been able to score a Chinese theatrical release overlapping with US domestic & worldwide release.

The upcoming flick is said to be Pakistan's most expensive production to date.

The trailer for Bilal Lashari's much-awaited The Legend of Maula Jatt was released yesterday and it exceeded our expectations (even though we didn't understand a word); there's no doubt about the fact that it's an absolute visual treat.

And it seems like we're not the only ones impressed. Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan evidently left quite an imprint on the Bollywood fraternity because Indians were all praise for the teaser.

Filmmakers clearly miss the duo

Rustic and audacious, The Legend of Maula Jatt is a risk that just might pay off for Pakistani cinema
By Sami Saayer

The Legend of Maula Jatt@MaulaJattMovie

Watch the first look trailer of "The Legend of Maula Jatt"

A Bilal Lashari Film.

Starring: Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, Humaima Malick, Hamza Ali Abbasi, Ali Azmat, Gohar Rasheed, Faris Shafi, Shafqat Cheema, Nayyer Ejaz and Saima Baloch.https://bit.ly/2AbPRZW

This is Fawad Khan’s first film since returning from greener pastures, Bilal Lashari’s second venture after the trendsetting Waar, and Mahira Khan’s reunion with Fawad. What’s not to look forward to? It has something for everyone; even for someone like me, who thought Waarwas overrated and disjointed (even though very well treated).

Before moving further, let’s address the elephant in the room. I have seen numerous posts leaving comments like:

“Gladiator ki copy hai.”

(This is a copy of Gladiator)

“Game of Thrones chhaap liya.”

(They’ve copied Game of Thrones)

My simple answer to whoever says that to me is:

Tou aap chhaap letay!”

(So you could have copied it!)

Whether or not it is copied, has the Pakistani audience seen Fawad in this avatar before? Has the Pakistani audience been privy to this scale on the big screen by a Pakistani film before? The answer is a plain and simple no. Teefa in Trouble was a big film, but even that does not come close to the scale Lashari has brought to the screen. It might not be at the level of Baahubali, but it’s close to KGF, which is already breaking record after record.

new-picture-1-1545889702.jpg

Undoubtedly, LoMJ looks grand. However, what’s important is the substance behind the froth. It doesn’t look grand for the sake of it; effectively meaning it does not look like Thugs of Hindostan or Tashan. It looks rustic. It looks raw. It looks audacious. It does not look like a remix by Neha Kakkar; it looks like a remixed track by Tiesto. It does not look like what Farhan Akhtar’s Don was to Chandra Barot’s Don; it looks more in line with Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes to Alfred Werker’s The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes; essentially improving a classic in modern times. Does it also have the potential to become Ram Gopal Varma ki Aag? Yes, it does.

Remaking a classic is a daunting task. Expectations are high and there will always be some purists who will never be happy, no matter how well you do. Agneepath, for example, was a very good remake; however, it also faced criticism for removing the character of Krishnan Iyer.

new-picture44-1545890106.jpg

Photo: Screenshot

Fawad’s look is on point; his hair, not so much. However, his intensity is contagious. My forehead had a frown while watching his trailer, and for no reason at all really.

giphy.gif

Photo: Giphy

Hamza Ali Abbasi looks closer to Khilji of Padmaavat, and to be honest, falls slightly short of Fawad in the trailer, particularly in that laughter scene. Perhaps he is supposed to?

giphy.gif

Photo: Giphy

Mahira is there, albeit overshadowed by Humaima Malick’s slyness. Gohar Rasheed looks evil, and Nayyar Ijaz even more so.

Sreejesh Nair’s soundtrack speaks for itself, and is probably going to be 50% of the ticket’s worth. I would also not have been surprised if the characters started speaking Dothraki, but why not?

new-picture-33-1545889676.jpg

Photo: Screenshot

new-picture-55-1545889678.jpg

Photo: Screenshot

One of the toughest tasks of the film was the makeup, and boy have Maram and Aabroo lived up to the task, barring Fawad’s hair. Did I mention his hair looks out of sync?

The trailer of LoMJ is thus everything it was expected to be and then some. Will it make commercial sense? Let’s have a look.

Firstly, it’s an expensive film. That scale and grandness does not come cheap. In order to make money, it will have to become the highest grossing Pakistani film ever. Not just the highest, but highest by a mile.

new-picture-22-1545889674.jpg

Photo: Screenshot

There are still two problems with the film though – starting with the language. It’s 100% a Punjabi film, just like the original. How the audience from Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwawill react to a national level Punjabi film remains to be seen. If Shaan Shahid is to be believed, Karachi already has a problem with films being made in Lahore, let alone a Punjabi film.

Secondly, if the rumours are true, there are no songs in the film. A film without a song in today’s time is, once again, audacious. In front of LoMJ will be Wajahat Rauf’s third film, taking around 20-30% screens out of the 130 or so available. Rauf’s film is a comedy entertainer with a relatable young cast. Can that topple the grandness of LoMJ? You never know.

As Maula says,

“Maulay nu Maula na maray tay Maula nae marda!”

(If Maula does not kill Maula, then Maula does not die)

Maybe the only reason for Maula Jatt not working at the box office will be Maula Jatt itself.

The Legend of Maula Jatt is set to release on Eidul Fitr 2019.

While the Pakistani film industry saw some big releases through 2018, local film-makers are already hoping for a better 2019.

“The year 2018 has been great for Pakistani films altogether,” Load Wedding director Nabeel Qureshi tweeted. “Cinema has earned more from Pakistani films than Bollywood or Hollywood imports this time! It’s a big achievement. May it do great in 2019 as well.”

Ali Zafar, Maya Ali-starrer Teefa In Trouble also made it big at the box-office and emerged as one of the biggest hits of the year. Then there were Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2 and Parwaaz Hai Junoon as well.

Previously, Hamza Ali Abbasi lauded the multiple releases of 2018. Abbasi wrote, “Anxiously looking forward to Teefa In Trouble, JPNA 2, Load Wedding and Parwaaz Hai Junoon releasing this year. Because of these films, I can happily and confidently say that 2018 will be a great year for the Pakistani film industry.”

1874830-jpna-1545808500-369-640x480.jpg

Throughout 2018, local distributors enjoyed ample revenue from the local films. They are more than satisfied and no longer see the presence of Indian releases as a threat. Pakistani film business is booming and has done pretty well throughout the year.

Super Cinemas general manager Khorem Gultasab told The Express Tribune, “All movies attracted reasonable crowd, except Na Band Na Baraati.”

“The local audience has started believing in our films and realised that we can also produce good ones,” a senior official of Distribution Club stated. “Those who still don’t believe in Pakistani film industry should really start watching our films. After such a long time, we have managed to do so well.”
