Thieving monkeys 'out of control' in northeast India

Sat Nov 17, 3:08 AM ET

GUWAHATI, India (AFP) - Troupes of monkeys are out of control in India's northeast, stealing mobile phones and breaking into homes to steal soft drinks from refrigerators, lawmakers in the region have complained.

"Monkeys are wreaking havoc in my constituency by taking away mobile phones, toothpastes, sipping coke after opening the refrigerators," Hiren Das told Assam state's assembly.

He said the primates were "even slapping women who try to chase them".

"It is a cause of serious concern in my area, with more than 1,000 such simians turning aggressive by the day," fumed Goneswar Das, another legislator representing Raha in eastern Assam.

Assam's wildlife minister, Rockybul Hussain, said the state government has formed a panel to study the problem.

Because of shrinking forest cover, monkeys have increasingly moved into cities elsewhere in India as well.

Last week, around two dozen people were hurt after monkeys rampaged through a New Delhi neighbourhood.

Last month, the deputy mayor of Delhi died when he fell from his balcony after being attacked by monkeys.

Efforts to drive out the animals is complicated by the fact that devout Hindus view them as an incarnation of Hanuman, the monkey god who symbolises strength

Not Let free...but we humans have ruined their natural habitat by Letting Ourselves free in their domain (deforestion etc...)....We humans interfered in their lives first...by stealing their homes...now they are stealing our mobile phones...etc..:cheesy:

While the above article if from Assam known for its forests.....

On Delhi:
The answer to this question dates back decades. If we look at the larger picture it is we humans who are in the monkey’s homes. That’s right! We are bearing the brunt for decades of unplanned urban development. Every time a road is built hundreds of trees are cut, without any intention of ever growing more trees someplace else in compensation.

What then happens to the inhabitants of these trees, they wander on and end up in our homes. Snakes, monkeys and all other such creatures have now become a part of urban wildlife because they have nowhere else to go. There is no green cover.

However, that is not the only reason for that monkey to be in Mr. Bajwa’s house that fateful day. The residents of Savita Vihar where this incident occurred say that there is a Sai Baba Temple nearby where people feed the monkeys causing them to return time and again. (Religious Beliefs)

This is a phenomenon which contributes in a major way to the monkey menace the capital is currently facing. Monkeys are intelligent animals who learn quickly, when they get food easily from a local temple, they will frequent the place, seldom alone. Just as they will frequent places with food out in the open from unclosed garbage bins and open piles of garbage.

The increasing population of monkeys and their loss of habitat with the increasing urbanisation in and around the Delhi region have triggered such behaviour of monkeys, as they roam in groups in cities' residential colonies in search of food and water.

Often known to gravitate towards urban settings from rural environs lured by easy hand-outs of food from humans, monkeys in this country are by turns worshipped, dreaded, tortured into delivering street performances and, lately, victimised for doing what they are genetically built to do – act like monkeys.

Jana, do you see any other reason why Monkeys are in Delhi which earlier had a huge forest cover?? even today if you see Delhi on Google Earth you can see the forest covers in the middle of sprawling city...rather i should say that other way round is more appropriate

In case of Islamabad, I believe its a very well planned city .....but if Margalla hills forest cover is threatened then those simians would be forced to monkey around Islamabad too..

Well eleborated answer let me add to your points on this.
urbanization leads to many problems indeed.

Yeh one can understand the Hindu belief in Monkyes but keeping in view the current situation which is getting out of hands as monkyes after getting courage even killing the human, would it not be fair to start an awarness drive to make people understand they must not feed them as the area have monkeyes in large number rather they can do it in other places where these are not in abondnce.

Than what should be the strategy and plan to restrict these monkeyes or shift them to somehwere else ??

monkeys in this country are by turns worshipped,
That is understandble as hindus relate the Monkey with Hunuman.

pardon Dhani but its strange a country where Monkey is worshiped howcome monkyes be used as street performarers???
I mean what is the concept of considering monkyes as sacred like the cow is considerd by Hindus??

Is there any difference with regard to sacredness of these ??

lol...Jana , Monkeys are not killing people but it was a freak accident.

There are already awareness drive that i have seen in New Delhi from covered garbage dumps to discouraging feeding the animals. I dont think its a quick fix but well thought plan that should take its own due time.:enjoy:

Forgive me Jana, i am not a religious person neither a Hindu or Muslim who can comment on the worshipping part. Every man to his own view and i dont mind and its none of my business. As there are some other traditions like Sacrificing of animals (in most of the religions) which i dont buy either but faith is faith and i have no right to interfere in them.

Its not a strange country but its a Strange World in that sense...where every country/society/religion have some strange traditions/rituals when worshipping which amuses me just as it amuses you when it comes to Animal worshipping w.r.t India.

So i will put my view withought wearing Religion shades

I look at it as street performers's abuse of animals as thats their tradition of earning bucks to feed themselves which i know is slowly dying as a tradition..

As long as Animals and trees etc worshipping saves and preserve the enviornment...I dont mind...

There is so much to this world when not looking through religious sentiments and i m glad i can see them.

May be because there is nothing in scriptures that forbids it so no one minds it , and its helping a poor soul earn his bread ...whats so confusing about it or you are being too naive ? :azn:

Not only street performers but Gods, religions and its symbols are greatly used as Business...modern business as well...its all money baby !!

Its something like a religious chant can be made to save a human's life and at the same time can be used with same fervor while beheading another human by a young boy !!! all in the name of religion and with justifications !!!

Confused World aint it ? :cheesy:

Forest Cover in India is not only around Assam State but all over India..some are dense while some are open....

Check this Link -- States' Forest Cover in India --as in 1999

You can click on different states of India and it will show you the forest cover (as in 1999)...a little old map but would give you a fair idea.

Delhi's Forest Cover Map- http://envfor.nic.in/fsi/sfr99/chap3/delhi/f35.html

Delhi geography divides the state into three parts- the Delhi ridge, the Yamuna flood plain and the plains. The Delhi ridge is the most important characteristic of the state and is a part of the Aravalli range that passes through Delhi

I was asking about the areas where Monkyes have become unruly

You said as their natural homes were destroyed so these monkeys have truned to the cities.
I was asking whether the forests in these areas are plane forests or montain forests.
