"Israeli industries are the 'Silicon Valley' of the world of security in the world"
The American company DRS has five collaborations with large Israeli defense industries in order to produce products in Israel and sell them to the US Defense Department. Meanwhile, there has been one big success. "We see Israel as a development house for military technologies that is fast and cheap compared to the US," says Michael Coulter, director of international operations for DRS in a special interview

"We are focused on customers in the US, especially the army and Navy, and also the Air Force. From our point of view, working with Israeli industries is an advantage because of the speed of development and the low cost compared to similar development in the US, "says Michael Coulter, DRS's international operations manager in a special interview with Israel Defense. "We know what the requirements are according to the budget lines in the US and we are matching the requirements with the capabilities of the Israeli industries."

DRS was acquired by Italian company Leonardo-Finmeccanica in 2008, with the intention of owning a "pure" US defense company that is familiar with the US Department of Defense purchasing and equipping process. The company represents DRS in Israel and David Assaf On from ATG.

One of the first projects to be carried out is the development of DRS together with IMI systems of a hydraulic launcher to the bridgehead for the American army to be installed on the M1A1 Abrahams tanks. In 2012, the US Army purchased two models, and in May 2016, DRS won a $ 31 million tender with an option to expand to 365 units.

Another project that DRS is doing with Rafael is marketing a "windbreaker" system for the US military. In light of the challenges of the American military in Europe, he wants to equip himself with an active defense system for the RCO and he manages two tracks - one for the rapid acquisition of an existing system and two for the development of a modular system called MAPS. Take at least five years.

DRS also collaborates with Bet El Systems to sell air filtration systems to US Army Recruits. There is also cooperation between the company and Rada around radar to identify small flying for the Marines and the army. DRS also has a majority of robots around a large US military robot auction named CRS-I.

"The US secretary of defense wants new technologies and he understands that not all of them will come from the big American industries," Coulter explains. Israel's defense industries are reminiscent of Silicon Valley in their innovation. It's as close as I've ever seen it in the world.

"Another common ground between Israel and the United States is common security challenges in the Middle East. However, if we examine the requirements of the Ministry of Defense, some are not related to the Middle East, but to Europe. For example, the requirement to equip active defense systems to the Reconnaissance Unit came from the joint command of the United States and Europe. "

What technologies are you looking for in the future?

"We notice that one of the challenges on the modern battlefield is energy," says Coulter. "All the smart systems that are put on the radar require energy. One of the directions is the development of the combined drive of an electric motor and an internal combustion engine. The US military has invested in this in Afghanistan and Iraq in the Stryker APC, we have done research in the past, and we are looking for a partner to develop such technology, another technology is a laser, especially the US Navy, which is looking for such technologies. Them with Israeli industries. Maybe there will be cooperation around this. "

What is the benefit of collaborating with DRS in the eyes of an Israeli company?

"To sell to the US Department of Defense you need to know how the process works. It is not easy. You should also be in touch with customers, the military, navy or air force, to understand their requirements. For an Israeli company of any size, doing business in the US is not simple, and the relationship with DRS is an advantage in this direction, "explains Coulter.

"Beyond the Ministry of Defense tenders, the product of the Israeli company becomes an American product, with all the implications of this in the aspect of international export, which makes it possible to sell it under FMS programs in which the US provides foreign aid to countries around the world. Under the FMS, the state can receive subsidies from the US and then it is worth buying the product, even if there is no financial aid, the FMS allows the country to buy the product from the US government at the price it buys, Higher.

"Another advantage is the connection with Leonardo, the owner of DRS, since the systems are connected, any product that DRS markets receives exposure to Leonardo customers around the world, and exposure to almost all countries in the world.

"Another aspect of the end-customer is buying a product that the US is using because of the support and guidance. If a customer buys the Abrams tank, he does not buy it just because of the quality of the product, but also because he gets a whole package of training, joint training, maintenance, and everything that needs to be turned on.

The US Defense Market Where to?

"The US defense budget is the largest in the world, and it will continue to be. Therefore, the US market will continue to be a prime target for any American or Israeli defense company, "says Coulter." If every US defense company examines it, you'll see that between 50 and 100 percent of its sales are to the domestic market. A small portion of the DRS in export is 25 percent and it is considered high.

"After the withdrawal from Afghanistan and Iraq, there were several years of a decline in the defense budget and many American companies began to give more weight to export, but this trend has been halted, and in the last three years stagnation and even a rebound in the defense budget, partly due to demands in the Middle East and Asia. Larger, it is due to periodic renewal plans of old systems, for example DRS has a part in upgrading the US submarine fleet. There are systems that the US needs to upgrade every few years, regardless of the situation
