Royal Enfield to Set Up Third Plant in India; Double Production Capacity

Royal Enfield announced it will install its third manufacturing facility and increase its production capacity in India. The aforementioned plant that will be set up by 2018 in Vallam Vadagal on the outskirts of Chennai will allow the bikemaker to double its total production capacity to 900,000 units per annum as compared to the current output of 450,000 units.
The Eicher Motors-owned Royal Enfield currently has two facilities in Tamil Nadu, India.



Siddhartha Lal, CEO and Managing Director, Eicher Motors, further added that the first phase of the new plant will aid the proposed increase in production and the work for which will begin in 2016.

Other than the new plant, Royal Enfield is also looking to launch new products; well, 2 to be precise. Mr Lal said the bikemaker will bring in 2 new models, out of which one will be launched in early 2016, while the other has an expected launch date of 2017.

Furthermore, Royal Enfield also plans to strengthen its dealership network across India and establish 500 dealerships by the end of the year.

Internationally, Royal Enfield has been working equally hard. Last month, the company announced its first exclusive stores in Madrid and Paris. In fact, the bikemaker is expanding its presence in the European markets with over 80 dealerships across France and 25 in Spain. In September, it had announced its entry in the Indonesian market at Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2015. The company will soon commence retail operations in Indonesia via its exclusive dealership in Jakarta.

well pakistan has the best car in the world from the 80s its called suzuki sh1tballs which is s1tload of money! dam... i am very impressed with Indian auto industry! Even though most of the technology is western TOT it still beats stoneage pakistani cars.

Sorry , but the cars and bikes from Royal Enfield's, BAJAJ's, TATA's and Mahindra's stable are all but home build. There is a fierce competition brewing between them to rule the Indian markets. Though we have European, Japanese and American autos too here, but they have some or the other design houses in India too. It dose not mean that complete vehicle is designed here, but during the design of it's subsystems , Indian designers definitely have a say from these off-shore design centers.

So, NO there is no TOT.

The vast majority arent rebadged or license produced. Nor are they using some chassis from other companies, or paying for some royalty for using other's designs. They havent(for the most part) done that since the 90s. TATA uses outside design companies to design some of their cars, but they have equal to majority stake in them. Never the less, larger car companies use outsourced design firms, engines, chassis, etc. in some cases.

TATA Compact Car/Hatchback, 'Zica'

I like this design. It'd be interesting to know what trim level these pictures show. With the nice instrumentation it could be upper-end trim.

At some point - Tata should start exports to Brazil/Russia/rest of Asia by,
  1. Sorting out the reliability of transmissions/engine components (Koreans use Japanese transmissions in some of their top end cars).
  2. Start with a basic model a bit bigger like the i30/Elantra (Corolla size). Hyundai started with the pony/excel in the late 1980's exported to the US. Story here.
  3. Hiring a European designer (the Koreans got Audi's ex-designer) to sort out a unified design theme across models.
  4. Every company has to start somewhere. Start exports with a price-leader basic model to Brazil, South America, South Africa, Australia, East Africa and Russia to test the markets.
Mahindra was supposed to intro a small car or SUV in the US but they backed off. Their mini pickup and of course farm tractors sell here pretty well but the cars are yet a no-show. I think Mahindra (and maybe Tata as well) are waiting for the Chinese (Shanghai General Motors, Dongfeng, FAW, and Chang’an) to make a move in the US market. But other markets are ripe of being marketing guinea-pigs to sort out reliability issues.

Beware however that you're dealing with stiff competition. Like Chinese 2nd tier manufacturers (Namely Chery) with models like the Tiggo (below) which checks every styling que checkbox like in advanced markets like the US. Price maybe the only saving grace which will also be an uphill battle.

Both TATA and Mahindra do not have a strong line up just yet. Mahindra's XUV is the only thing that may do well in the US. TATA's new Safari may also. They face stiff amount of competition in that segment here, and they have no name, them coming from India doesnt really help too.

They need a strong line up first before entering into markets like the US, plus they need to invest in CVT, Automatic transmission, cause no one really uses manual here. They are starting to target Latin America, Africa, S.E.A. markets, these markets are more similar to India, than the west. Makes sense to expand there.

TATA recenty stated that it's up coming vehicles will take design traits, cues from it's concept it reveals.

And it shows with the Hexa and Zica, both look like proper contemporary designs. A lot of Mahindra's designs are rather rough looking

Mahindra’s much awaited New Compact SUV Revealed

• It is christened the Mahindra KUV100
• To be powered by an all new mFALCON engine family
• Marks Mahindra’s entry into ground up petrol engines

Mumbai December 18, 2015:

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M), India’s leading SUV manufacturer, today revealed its much awaited compact SUV codenamed S101, calling it the Mahindra KUV100 (pronounced as KUV ‘1 double Oh’). The company also unveiled an all new, world-class engine family named mFALCON, marking its entry into the ground up petrol space.
