building metro costs incredible amount of money for a developing country like Vietnam.
Saigon metro line 1 costs some $2.5 billion, line 2 about $2.5 billion, line 4 and 5 some $4.5 billion each. If we had begun constructing metro 20 years ago, we would have saved a lot of money. we are quite late.

Thanks for the info. Very nice looking station! According to the news, Line 1 has been postponed by 2 years, from 2018 to 2020? Which line will be in service first?

Best wishes for your people!

So the costs of Line 1 and Line 2 have been more than doubled? According to wiki, the initial budget for Line 1 was 1.1 Billion and Line 2 was 1.2 B. The cost overrun caused any uproar among people? Or people in Vietnam would only complain about Hanoi metro budget overrun, since it is being built by a Chinese company?

Other Vietnamese members in this thread appeared very angry about 300 million addition fund for Hanoi metro.

everything costs more. "inflation". for instance, a lot of money must be spent on land acquisition and compensation. more than expected.

line 1 comes in 2018. delayed.
Ho Chi Minh City says fifth metro line will cost $4.47 billion | Society | Thanh Nien Daily

11km costs $868 million is not cheap, during construction 2 civilians died. The project started in 2011 and the completion date will delay to 2016 -2018.

It is cheap. The China experience is that 400~500 million RMB per km, quite close to the Vietnam figure you raised. But plz. be aware of that the China figure is based upon the massive scale: China now owns about 2,500km metro lines, and there is another 2,500~3,000 km lines under construction. Massive scale, in economics theory, means lower cost per unit.

Underground tunnel proved to be very attractive alternative especially in expensive land area. Vietnam shall be wise to ask China to be the contractor for such project. Japanese/Europe tunnel boring machine are expensive to rent and they will charge you an arm or leg for short tunnel.

some 16 cent per ride. I guess will be higher due to delay and increase of construction costs.

That is extremely inexpensive. Until a couple years ago, people in Beijing would only pay 2 RMB ($0.3) flat fee to ride on all its 500+ km metro system. Now they have to pay based on the distance of their ride. I think it is capped at RMB 10?

Any Chinese member from Beijing here? @beijingwalker

Yes, it is indeed very cheap, especially when compared with the subway system in Saigon. The train looks like old design, color scheme was awful, nevertheless it gives you biggest bang for your money. The most important thing is, it will be the first to put in service.

But again, some Vietnamese members here may not care at all if some foreign contractors charge them more than double of original budgets and delay the projects by years, as long as they are not Chinese, be them Japanese, Korean, Spanish, or French.

The problem is 2 civilians died, 1 offical rail adminstration suicide and poor quality metro. Cheap = inferior, they get what they paid for.
