New Pak ISI Chief Shares Tenuous Link With SRK

PTI | Rezaul H Laskar | Islamabad | Mar 10, 2012

Pakistan's new ISI chief, Lt Gen Zahir-ul-Islam, is the nephew of Indian National Army hero Shah Nawaz Khan and through him, shares a tenuous link with Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan.

Islam's father served as a brigadier in the Pakistan Army and Shah Nawaz Khan, who was a major general in the INA led by Subhas Chandra Bose, was his uncle, leading Pakistani defence analyst Ikram Sehgal told PTI.

"One son of Shah Nawaz Khan went with him at the time of Partition, while another, Mahmood Nawaz, stayed on in Pakistan and became a full colonel.

"In fact, Mahmood Nawaz went and met his father only after retirement as he could not travel to India while he was in service," Sehgal said, providing details of the new ISI chief's extended family.

Shahrukh Khan's late mother Lateef Fatima was the adopted daughter of Shah Nawaz Khan, according to the Bollywood star's biography on several websites.

Islam, who was yesterday appointed the new head of the powerful spy agency by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, comes from a military family and was born in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.

It could not immediately be ascertained whether Islam had ever met Shah Nawaz Khan, who died in 1983.

Shah Nawaz Khan was himself born at Kahuta and served in the British Indian Army during World War II.

He was captured when Japanese troops overran Singapore in 1942 and then joined the INA.

He subsequently fought alongside Japanese forces against the British in Burma (now Myanmar).

Shah Nawaz Khan was captured by the British and put on trial with other INA officers in 1946.

They were convicted for treason but were discharged due to intense pressure from the public.

He later joined the Congress party and was elected to the Lok Sabha four times.

Before Islam's appointment as the ISI chief, some media reports had suggested that Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan’s uncle Maj Gen Isfandyar Ali Khan Pataudi, a deputy director general in the spy agency, was in the running for the top slot.

However, sources told PTI that Pataudi was never seen as a serious contender for the post of ISI chief.

Its a open secret, Dont you know that. No need to justify.

Atleast the wrong doing of Nagis and Veena are damaging only to themselves. Whereas the stupidities of Pasha and Kayani has made us a laughing stock in front of whole world.

Jab kutti he choroun Kay sath mil jaye to chowkidar stupid he Lagtay hain. It will be much better if you stop expressing you bias or ignorance.

Everything is put into consideration to chose the most deserving candidate to run a professional, critically important and top Intelligence agency. There are many reasons why Lt. General Zaheer-ul-Islam is chosen, and some of them are already mentioned in this thread over and over.
This is what we say after appointment of every new ISI chief and COAS. We declare them the only wise men available in PA.
Any way the best thing is that we have got rid of Gen. Pasha. All efforts to gain yet another extension have ended in smoke.

Only in the eyes of people like you.
Yes definately I think these actresses have caused much lesser damage to Pakistan and its interests than these Generals on extensions like Pasha and Kayani.

So in your opinion whats was more damaging for Pakistan and its interest

Seems like you are pro-MQM buddy,
I am a pro Pakistan buddy and don't need any certificate from this.

so we aren't surprised by your extreme hatred against Pakistan Army. After all, they have been heavy on head of political militants ;)
It isn't the hatred against Men in uniform , its the hatred against Greedy Generals lIke Zia Ul Haq, Ayub Khan, Pasha, Kayani. Musharaf.

mere co-incidence perhaps!

The new spymaster: Aabpara’s new top gun
By Wajahat S Khan
Published: March 10, 2012

Interestingly, Islam is among the batch of officers who have been ‘groomed’ by the Chief of Army Staff in the ‘new look’ ISI.
He’s the new boss of Aabpara, but he’s not the same as the old boss. Lt-Gen Zaheerul Islam, the designate DG-ISI, just like the incumbent but soon to retire Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence Lt-Gen Ahmad Shuja Pasha, is also an infantryman, but hails from different regiment: the famed Punjab (Pasha is from another celebrated wing of the infantry, the Frontier Force).
Unlike Pasha, who took over the ISI after a stint as Director General Military Operations with little high-level intelligence experience, Islam has previously served in the ISI as a two-star major general, and also commanded the very cushy V Corps in Karachi. He’s a certified paratrooper and alpine-trained, and hails from a prominent military family of war heroes who’ve worn lots of brass.
Islam’s Karachi Tenure
The V Corps stint in Karachi is a complicated job. Like the IV Corps in Lahore, it’s regarded as a choice posting which only those officers close to the Chief of Army Staff get to hold. Firstly, it features command of the 25th Mechanized Division, which watches over every spot of land from Malir to upper Sindh, making it the largest land covering formation in the Army. But Islam was not just watching over Pakistan’s eastern deserts, a likely axis of a conventional war with India if it ever comes, during his corps command. From his office on Shahra-e-Faisal, Islam’s tenure has featured overseeing Karachi during the ‘target killing’ turbulence of 2010-11, the arrests of prominent militants and terrorists (some with links to the Taliban), as well as the reorganization of the DHA. The PNS Mehran attack occurred down the street from his headquarters. The man has obviously been exposed to an eclectic brand of soldiering in Pakistan’s largest, and perhaps most complicated, city.
Islam’s Previous ISI Stint
Zaheerul Islam is not an unknown quantity within the ISI. He was reportedly DG Internal, dealing with domestic and counter-terrorism ambits as a major general under a younger and pre-extension General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. Interestingly, Islam is among the batch of officers who have been ‘groomed’ by the Chief of Army Staff in the ‘new look’ ISI. Before 2004, those who served as top-guns at Aabpara had a very different promotion stream than those who didn’t. Generally, in a classic bifurcation that was almost traditional, Rawalpindi’s spooks were different from its soldiers. However, and perhaps in his own image, Kayani has streamlined some of Army’s best and brightest to also pass through the ISI.
What Now?
Thus, the ISI has, especially under Kayani, become a type of ‘finishing school’ for Army’s top brass. Islam, besides holding the right command, staff and operational posts, is among those ranks of ‘soldier spies’. Critically, in the context of ongoing military operations within the country, his infantry background is also going to matter, for the ISI, officially sans its ‘political wing’, is gradually reverting to what it was formed to do: provide field intelligence for war. As most of the operations and engagements in FATA, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan continue to be infantry-dominated, Islam’s foot-soldier background will be critical.
Also, especially after his very glasnost style stint at Karachi, where he often interacted with the press, expect him to be more media savvy, if not maintain a higher profile, than Pasha. As he is a known organizer, also expect him to recalibrate, if not redux, the ISI’s at least six known sub-directorates: Analysis, Counter, Internal, Media, Special and Technical. But don’t expect any game-changing turnarounds, for Islam is a few batches more junior to his boss, Kayani, than Pasha was, and the COAS isn’t going golfing till at least November 2013, when Islam could well be in the final three or four finalists who are gunning for the top slot at Chaklala Garrison.

I have a question, that once the DG ISI is appointed by the PM, the vacant spots are filled by the GHQ right?

.
LT. Gen. Zahir Ul Islam best of luck :pakistan:
Now the next question is: who will replace Gen. Kayani? I personally vote for LTG Tariq Khan. Though Rabban won't be a bad choice either. LTG Tariq Khan is well-known in XI Corps while Rabbani is currently CC XI Corps. Tariq Khan had commanded FC during the most difficult times.

I don't even know why I am replying you.

But Intelligence and Military is not what a normal man sees. You need to be a good analyst with insiders to keep feeding you, or be on the high ranks yourself. General Pasha and Kayani have done quite amazing work, which isn't wise to post.

Remember, General Kayani was from ISI. This is intelligence stuff, too sensitive and top secret. Say what ever you want to, but the truth is they have achieved the national goals.

As for OBL raid, the US was afraid of retaliation by PAF so they had an AWACS monitoring and 5 F/A-18 air borne. ADA saw them on the radar screen hours before the actual 'operation' and had flown sorties. But technology is technology in the end, the stealth helicopters wouldn't appear on the screen and nothing was known until they hovered over a no-fly zone (PMA Kakul) and PAF was informed. Two F-16s were sent behind them when 5 F/A-18s appeared on the screen and the F-16s were called back, to avoid any nasty battle, in the long run. Alas, they mustn't have done that but you cannot call it failure of Kayani and Pasha, but a dilemma of Air Force and their weak actions during a limited time.

The topic is too sensitive and too deep, I have already made a report on that, and I wouldn't like to debate over it.
As for Intelligence again, only the worst keep it crystal clear. Everything is behind a thick curtain, hence you cannot say what is happening behind.

If you are pro-Pakistan, you wouldn't have said this.

Vow, and what is that amazing work. Ok let e help you. Following are some so the amazing achievements of Gen. Pasha and Kayani duirng their extended tenure:

1. attack on GHQ, 26 hrs. long episode , 6 SSG men killed with 22 other. (Vow great achievemnet).
2. Destruction of ISI offices in Lahore, Peshawar and Multan. (Great isn't it.).
3. Gang rape by USA during OBL operation. (Greatest success).
4. Drone attack on daily basis.
5. killing of 72 javans by USA and NATO.
6. Mehran base attack, 3 billion rs. PC3 orion destroyed. (great intelligence, thumbs up).
7 Organizing Memogate drama.
i am in hurrry otherwise i would list a dozen more.

Say what ever you want to, but the truth is they have achieved the national goals.
And whats that national goal we have achieved during Kayanis tenure.

LTG ISLAM got very mean look and he looks like a man who mean business. LTG Pasha had aesthetic looks and seems to be a huble person.

RANA Saab, do enlighten us when CIA failed to protect twin towers and their second biggest failure of predicting Iraqi WMD's, yet we don't see their press bad mouthing them and second thing what drone attacks have to do with ISI? what 26 november incident has got to do with ISI.

OBL saga was a major failure like twin tower, Attack on GHQ and Mehran base was second major failure Like Iraq War failure. Attacks on ISI offices was not an intelligence failure but rather lack of intelligence like autonomous groups who dont know each other existence working on same targer, one group purpose is to LED ISI in to false trap and diverting their attntion from main subject, other group responible for recce and third group for executing plane. Now tell me where is the failure of ISI. ISI is not full of JAMES BOND type agents.

Right, according to you, your entire Airforce was scared of 5 F-18's? Good thing it wasn't India's SU-30MKI or the Airforce would have wet itself! But mate, you have no idea how courageously our men fight if given the chance. Please do not humiliate the Airforce in such a manner due to your misunderstanding.

It was a deliberate order from the top command to not intervene in the Abbotabad operation, How in the would could anyone, even aliens, carry out an hour long operation at Abbotabad, right next to the Military's biggest Military Academy? If the operation did happen as explained then either our Military is severely handicapped and incapable or that the top leadership had blessed the operation and with it had sold the dignity of the country, if any was left still.

Instead of love and hatred for politicians it would be much better if he focus on this professional duties. Instead of indulging them selves politics in We only expect that ISI and its chief perform their duties.

Bribing of politicians, making of Q-league and IJI and patronizing of Pressure groups like Dafa-e-Pakistan Council and harboring of non state militant organizations isn't the ISI job.

The explanations given by Air chief and PA in the aftermath of Abbotabad operation were so childish that the whole world including the Pakistani turn a deaf ear to what our military pundits said.
