Express News had reported earlier on Friday that the appointment of Lt Gen. Islam, who is currently the corps commander of Karachi, may be finalised later today, sources said. Islam is said to have a strong recommendation by President Asif Ali Zardari.

Islam has earlier served as the deputy director general of the ISI as a major general. He was then promoted to the rank of lieutenant general and moved to Karachi. He is said to be a disciplined and focused officer.

Consultations had been ongoing between the prime minister, president and the army chief. Sources said that the prime minister had told his cabinet ministers and advisers that they will announce the decision today.

Lt Gen. Pasha, who retires on March 18 after having served a one-year extension in tenure granted to him in March 2011, had requested the army chief in December to relieve him of his duties as the ISI chief. Pasha, who has been accused of involvement in some political conspiracies during his tenure, served as the DG of the ISI when al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden was found and killed in Abbottabad

Currently the corps commander of Karachi, Islam will take over on March 18, the day Pasha is due to retire.

Gilani appoints new ISI chief | Pakistan | DAWN.COM
SLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani appointed a new director-general of the country’s powerful spy agency on Friday, according to a statement from the prime minister’s office.

“The prime minister has appointed Lieutenant-General Zahirul Islam as the new DG-ISI,” it said, referring to the Directorate of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

Islam, the Karachi Corps commander, takes over from Lieutenant-General Ahmad Shuja Pasha, who was appointed in 2008 and is retiring on March 18.

The appointment of Islam puts to rest rumours regarding whether Pasha’s tenure would be extended.

Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan also showed his concern about the extension of the DG ISI. “PM has no authority to extend Pasha’s tenure,” he said on Thursday.

thus comes the end of a very eventful term ISI chief.

the new chief will have a lot on his plate including the failure to capture OBL on its own. there have been many successes but the world selective memory only retains the bad stories when it comes to ISI.

any one know much about Lieutenant-General Zahirul Islam? apart from the fact that the name is very Bengali ;)

I feel sorry for Veena Malick...
That ISI tattoo was a subliminal application for the job of ISI chief.

But oh well...some ol man got the job.

I know him personally.

Many congrats to Zahir Uncle...will miss him as he will now head up to Islamabad/Rawalpindi. He was patron of Sindh Golf, great gentleman. During the Karachi chaos and violence he kept his units on standby but showed restraint as he said orders can only come from the Chief. He hates politicians. Wouldn't talk to them over the phone.

Can say much more than that on PDF, but like the news article says, he was the Major General Deputy director for ISI so he already had the experience of heading ISI.

.
Congratulations Zahirul Islam.

You seem to be well known and hope you can maintain ISI the way you maintained your units.

.
A good decision as the good gentlemen has already considerable experience with Intel work. He is going to continue with the divide and conquer strategy with the takfiri - also the business of learning and dissemination of indian security weapons and tactics will be accelerated.

I must admit that I don't know much about Lt-Gen Zaheer, but the fact that he had a strong recommendation by Zardari for the post does not fill me with confidence. Hopefully I am wrong. Because there can be no compromises made on Pakistan's security.

Learning and analysing Indian weapons and tactics are done continuously by the pakistani establishment. Same vice versa.

His first priority would be galvanizing Pakistan as a whole then protecting it from outside influence. Certainly a tough task.
