China’s first aircraft carrier battle group is expected to be formed next year to make up for the shortcoming of the limited combat radius of the country’s existing fleets, according to China’s official news agency Xinhua.

Citing the Military-Industrial Courier, a Russia-based weekly, the report said China’s first carrier, the Liaoning, embarked on its first blue-water passage in early 2014 escorted by 12 vessels of different classes. The carrier, refitted in Dalian from a Soviet-era hulk purchased from Ukraine in 1998, was commissioned in 2012.

Beijing is considering different approaches for forming its aircraft carrier battle groups, including the one used by the United States Navy, the report said. Two new aircraft carriers built domestically with greater displacement and greater power are also planned, with the long-term goal of having four new carriers, it added.

With a driving power of 200,000 horsepower, the Liaoning has displacement of 67,500 tonnes at maximum load.

China began to build its first new aircraft carrier in 2013, which is expected to have “initial combat ability” in 2020. The PLA Navy also saw the number of its surface vessels more than double. It now has 50 missile frigates and destroyers in service compared with 15 in 2000.

The country has also spared no efforts in overhauling its old vessels by equipping them with its most advanced weapons, the report said. The PLA’s latest model of frigate is equipped with Russian-made P-270 supersonic anti-ship missiles with a range of 209 kilometers and the domestically produced YJ62 anti-ship missiles (241 km), YJ83 missiles (152 km)and YJ8A missiles (104 km), while the Luyang-class or Type 052D destroyers, the most advanced surface vessels in China’s navy, will be equipped with vertical launch systems and long-range anti-ship missiles.

China is also developing 10,000-tonne cruisers that are expected to be armed with massive anti-air, anti-ship, ship-based cruise missiles, and even magnetic weapons in the future, according to the report.

. . .
will it be able to evade subs? careful

.
Another heart-attack to the Indian Navy .....Chinese are expanding massively !
You are joking right?
Any one with even basic knowledge will know that it takes time to get a ACBG working . it will take the Chinese at least a decade to work tactics .So for another decade no one is going to take the Chinese AC seriously , plus the Chinese also have to contend with the USN , not to mention the IN.
Its nice to sprout jingoism but one really has to be realistic in these matters. :)

LOL..they're scratching the feat we did in 1960s..If Carrier Operations would be easy,Thailand would become USN.

by the way,PLAN CBG has a massive problem to solve from the start. How to use J-15 relevant from a Ski-Jump Carrier.they tried to use "Re-engineered SU-33" and land into a trap which has no easy escape route.

I seriously doubt authenticity of the news given so much error in the report. Its just another crap news from Russian.

By your theory, JMSDF shall be a carrier super power naval force by now given their experience dealing with carriers in WWII?

.
I hope the whole carrier fleet visits karachi.
I hope Pakistan builds a Navy with 16 to 18 Frigates and corvettes and 4 to 6 cruise missile destroyers along with 14 Submarines out of which two should be nuclear ones.

China is realistic in these matters ....don't fool yourself being untouchable ...you know your past experience with them ?

Thay may be having problems ....but sure they can solve it faster than you guys at least ...so don't compete with them in terms of efficiency and project completion on time !

Nope..that skill is lost.Plus, carrier related tech changed dramatically. They'll have to start from scratch. But they operates their "Helo Destroyer",so,there will be some similarity with Operations.

Its not my theory..everybody knows this fact that one can't simply leapfrog in this sector.you've to start from scratch.Another problem is,this carrier is Ski Jump one, where next ones possibly going to be Catobar.Transition of Flight Training.IMO,PLAN's achilles heel for now is their heavy J-15s.

LOL yeah.of course they'll solve "Faster",as we don't have similar problems.we perfected our Carrier Operations over last 50 years.Only major recent transitions is switching from Harrier to Mig-29K.Viraat,Vikramaditya,Vikrant,all are Ski Jump ones, though expert says,no two Carrier Operates similarly. Our next major Transition will come after Vishal.

don't use "Hope",use "Wish"..

J-15 has recently seen a lot of new tests, and it's not the lame duck some have thought it to be. There's more information on that in the Chinese Defence section, but even without going there, this is a test carrier, and it would be foolish to judge the competency of it base on one year of information.

Like you said everything takes time, it's true to prove success, but also true to prove failure.

China does need longer time, I say a decade sounds about right, maybe a little longer for our carriers to have actual combat effectiveness against a non brain dead opponent.

However, seeing as carriers against real opponents are not as effective anyways, the real value of Liaoning as a platform is testing and intimidation anyways.

Forming a combat group does exactly that.

I never said the Chinese were not being realistic , i said you were not. comprehension is a problem with you is it?

Chinese navy certainly cannot compete against USN. But do not use IN with USN in the same sentence. If Chinese navy meets IN in the middle of ocean, IN would have no chance without USN protection.

Pakistan should develop its economy. With nukes, India won't touch Pakistan. Let India waste all those money on defense development cost with nothing to show for.

Actually India 50 years experience with aircraft carrier has been a big disappointment.
Just look where they were before and look what they have now.

Before they had a brand new catapult launch aircraft carrier with Seahawk fighters. The carrier had an angle deck which was a advance design at that time. Seahawk was also a very sucessfull and reliable fighter. These capabilities was probably on par with the best in the world at that time.

Now they have a old ski ramp carrier with little or no capablility left. An old technology helicopter carrier. Both of which are bought second hand.

India had a very good chance but failed to master any of the aircraft carrier technology. They failed to master the catapult launch system, they failed to master the aircraft carrier based fighter, they failed to master the arrester cable landing technology. Now they ended up having to buy these technologies from other countries making them dependent on other countries for these technologies.

Indian aircraft carriers are small and only carry a few fighters. Mig-29K is a garbage fighter compared to the J-15.

China developed the aircraft carrier technology (which were denied by other countries) in 10 years which India still can't do even after 50 years. That's how pathetic Indian defence industry truly is.

Indian aircraft carriers are just like their missiles and fighters.....full of foreign components from Russia, France, Israel, Italy, US, etc. These people still can't make a weapon without foreign components.
