Popular Turkish serial Dirilis Ertugrul has had such effect on its viewers in Kashmir that parents are naming their children after its protagonist, Ertugrul.

Pediatricians in Kashmir say that parents are naming their newborns after Ertugrul, the lead character in Turkish historical fiction series, Dirilis Ertugrul. The adventure television series shows the life and times of people who laid the foundations of the Ottoman Empire.

Ertugrul is the frequently encountered name in my outdoor department, says Dr. Suhail Naik, consultant Pediatrician and president Doctors Association of Kashmir. During winters Ertugrul caps with fur were trending in Kashmir, but at that time I didn't comprehend the basis of fashion. Dirilis Ertugrul is set in 13th century Anatolia (now modern-day Turkey). It is based on stories of the Muslim Oghuz Turks, fighting Byzantine, invading Mongols and the Crusaders. The series revolves around Ertugrul Ghazi, a warrior and father of Ottoman Empire founder Osman I.

The serial became popular in Kashmir amid lockdown and siege after removal of Article 370 on August 5, 2019. With lockdown, communication blockade and later prolonged shutdowns against revocation of Article 370 became norm, Kashmiris started sharing the downloaded files on USB drives to watch this historical drama.

However, in the Covid-19 lockdown the popularity of the serial grew after it was dubbed in Urdu by Pakistan in April and the Urdu-language version, gaining a huge popularity in Kashmir.

We Muslims share each others HEROES, since the times of the Islamic revolution by our Prophet. From Commanders like Khalid bin Walid, Poets like Iqbal, leaders like Salah ud din ,Physicians like Bu Sina etc etc. The examples of all great Muslims have been told in every Muslim household.

So? There are many Turks named after İkbal, Khan, Muhammet Ali etc. Ertuğrul is an ordinary name in Turkey which leads me to believe that - again - this choice of naming is blown out of proportion by the media.

There were reports in which many parents named their newborn babies as Khaleesi inspired by Game of Thrones' character. What kinda identity crisis did they have to name their child over a fictional character from a fictional novel which is all about a fictional world?

It's not identity crisis, it's connecting to our identity.

The only people who seem to have a problem with Ertugrul are the ones who want to see Muslims divided.

They're the villains and traitors as shown in Ertugrul who only care about a small piece of land while Ertugrul imagines the whole world for Islam.

Kashmiris and Pakistanis are Turkic people. They look like Turks.

So? There are many Turks named after İkbal, Khan, Muhammet Ali etc. Ertuğrul is an ordinary name in Turkey which leads me to believe that - again - this choice of naming is blown out of proportion by the media.

Well, Ikbal, Romi, Pasha is little different story, these are known national icons. But here we are talking about inspire from TV serial, where 90 percent of foreign viewers don't even know who is this guy. They just watch it any other interesting TV serial.
