KARACHI: Ethnic and politically linked violence in Karachi has killed 800 people so far this year, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said Friday.
“About 800 people have been the victims of violent shootings in the last seven months,” Zohra Yusuf, chairwoman of the HRCP, told AFP.
The HRCP previously said 490 people were killed in the first six months of the year and on Friday that another 300 people died in July.

“The figures compiled by our staff and the death toll for the last month confirmed by the police shows the number of victims of violence was not less than 300,” Yusuf said.
The government has campaigned to end the clashes and deployed hundreds of additional police and paramilitary forces in the city, but the killings have continued with 58 people reported dead in five days alone this week.

HCRP says the violence in Karachi is the deadliest since 1995, when more than 900 killings were reported in the first half of the year.

MQM expected to rejoin government before Eid: Durrani

KARACHI: After a round of talks between the PPP led government and the MQM, including input from the President, it seems the MQM is poised to rejoin the government before the end of the Holy month, so says Local Government minister, Agha Siraj Durrani.
Speaking at an iftar function on Friday, Durrani said that while the MQM had tendered their resignations from their posts in the government, however the government had yet to accept them. This means that the return road has been kept open by the PPP for the MQM.
However, the road may be more tedious than in previous times after the government restored the commissionerate system in Sindh, a bone of contention between PPP and the MQM in the past month.
Durrani said that the commissionerate system was part of an old law, and old laws are subject to amendments. He further said that if any allies had any reservations against the commissionerate system, the government was willing to sit and resolve differences via dialogue.
On the flip side, MQM’s Raza Haroon said that both the MQM and the PPP were major political parties and both of them needed to work together for the betterment of the people. He was of the view that having a difference of opinion between the two parties was a positive sign for the people as their interests would be safeguarded during any dialogue.

KARACHI: Sindh Home Minister Manzoor Wasan said on Friday that 25 people have been arrested linked to the ongoing target killings in Karachi, DawnNews reported.

Wasan said that all 25 of the arrested have political affiliations however their affiliations will not be revealed as yet.

Moreover, Sindh Local Government Minister Agha Siraj Durrani has said that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement will re-join the government by Eid.

“We will offer the Eid prayers and then have breakfast together,” said Durrani.

Speaking to the media at the Chief Minister House, Durrani said that the commissionerate system will not be rolled back.

Separately, Senior Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza said that a middle ground can be reached on the commissionerate system.

Powerful gangs use deadly force to seize waterfront properties from local fishermen in Pakistan's commercial hub.

The violence plaguing Pakistan's commercial capital, Karachi, has spread to the city's coast.

Politically connected criminal gangs have been seizing valuable waterfront property from the fishermen who own it.

As Al Jazeera's Imtiaz Tyab reports, in some cases the gangs are using deadly force.

Ebad, UK official discuss Karachi situation


KARACHI: The United Kingdom Under-secretary Foreign Affairs Alistair Burt telephoned Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad on Wednesday and discussed the law and order situation in Karachi.

The present political situation of Pakistan and of Karachi, in particular, also came under discussion between the two. Burt lauded the efforts ofMQM chief Altaf Hussain in the restoration of peace in the metropolis. He gave an assurance that the UK was ready to help Pakistan in any way to achieve political stability and for the restoration of peace in Karachi.

Burt also appreciated the role of all stakeholders in Karachi who are making efforts to restore peace. Ebad apprised Burt that the government was fully cognisant of the situation in Karachi and action was being taken against criminal elements.

KARACHI: In a speech marked by a discernible reduction of bellicosity, Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain said on Wednesday that the Army and the Rangers be deployed in Karachi on a full-time basis to stop it from frequently descending into violence.

Mr Hussain set alarm bells ringing late on Tuesday night when he asked the beleaguered people of Karachi — where more than 300 people were killed last month alone — to stock up on ration for at least a month. He said the people must do that even if they had to sell valuables.

That the major portion of the Wednesday speech by the MQM chief was in English indicated that he sought to address the international audience in addition to his party’s senior leaders and general workers at the Lal Qila ground in Azizabad.

This impression was strengthened by a statement issued by British Foreign Office Minister for South Asia Alistair Burt after speaking to Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad over the phone.

Mr Burt expressed his concern “at the continuing violence and loss of life that Karachi has faced in recent weeks”.

He said: “I warned that inflammatory statements from any political party risked making the situation worse and that all political leaders and their parties have a duty to refrain from inciting violence and to reduce tensions and restore calm.

“Our Deputy High Commissioner in Karachi, Francis Campbell, has met representatives of all main political parties in Karachi to encourage them to work towards stability in Karachi and the wider region. I have asked my officials to reiterate these
points directly with the leadership of the MQM and to discuss our concerns.”

They know that they will not come in power again. That is why they are doing such things which require army interference, from takkar with judiciary to karachi violence, from high level corruption to mismanagement of govt. affairs. They are just seeking another 'cause' to become 'siasi shaheeds' so they can participate in next elections being mazlooms.

And stupid like Imran Khan is becoming their helping hand with hukumat hatao mulk bachao type stupidity.
