The commute from Mirpur to the Dhaka Airport is expected to come down to just 15 minutes following the inauguration of the four-lane Kalshi flyover on February 19.
The flyover is also expected to ease travel to Banani, Uttara, and eastern parts of the capital.
Dhaka North City Corporation Public Relations Officer Maqbool Hossain told Dhaka Tribune the major work of the flyover was completed on February 7, and some additional work is now in progress. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the flyover at the Kalshi Balur ground.
According to the DNCC, the government approved the project on January 1, 2018. The construction period was extended in two phases, and the latest deadline was in June 2023.
About Tk1,000 crore has been spent on the implementation of this project. DNCC will be responsible for the overall management of the flyover after its inauguration.
The flyover is about 2.34km long. The main four-lane flyover runs from ECB square towards Kalshi and Mirpur DOHS, while a two-lane ramp descends from Kalshi Mor to Kalshi Road.
Also under this project, the 3.70 km road from ECB Chattar to Kalshi has been widened into six lanes. Furthermore, 3.7km of roads, road dividers, 3.38 meters of communication ducts, and two footbridges with moving stairs have been constructed, while various footpaths were widened.
One PC girder bridge extension, one public toilet, two police boxes, 7.40km of RCC drains and saucer drains, 1.78km of RCC pipe drains, separate cycle lanes and six bus bays and passenger shelters have also been constructed. About 13 and a half acres of land was acquired for the implementation of the project.
Shamsu Mia has sold tea at Kalshi Mor for about 25 years. He said the area seems to have transformed for the better in the blink of an eye.
“What was once a dream has come true,” he said. Minhajul Shimul, a resident of DOHS, said it has been much easier to travel to his workplace since the opening of the metro rail, and the flyover would also be a boon.
