Before the funeral, it was generally believed that Jayalalithaa would be cremated, given her background, and the ashes stored in an urn at the MGR Memorial.

a senior AIADMK member said: “Amma is the third CM to have died in office. She was also buried in a manner similar to Anna and MGR, simple,” he said.

As far as I know she was Kattar devoted Hindu believer ... Neither she nor MGR who BTW is not a Tamil but a Malayali Nair were Rationalist like DMK ... most in AIADMK dont believe in Dravidian Nationalism ...

May be she wanted to replicate the funeral way of her mentor MGR or it may be a ploy by Shahikala to deprive the party of a political heir ...

Actually she gave clear cut instructions on her funeral to few members when she was hospitalized and it was followed the same. Dravidian stalwarts like Anna, MGR were put to rest in this way and she wanted to do the same. She might not have followed Dravidian ideology while she lived. But wanted to symbolically point out after her death. She did break some traditional rules.

And it seems games by Sasikala have started, but she is also aware of infight party might lead to now. OPS for all his loyalty was plucked out of nowhere to be CM n 2011. He doesnt have a strong local base like Natham Vishwanathan or current Deputy Lok Sabha Speaker Thambidurai. It seems Sasikala faction favoured Thambidurai, but the Centre preferred OPS and there was more pressure through Governor to have the power transferred to OPS as soon as possible.

After Vellupillai Prabhakaran the terrorist leader of the Tamil Tigers, another Tamil Hindu extremist bites the dust. Jayalalithaa Jayaraman died on Monday December 2016.

The woman was an an inveterate anti-Sri Lankan bigot. She claimed in public to loud cheers that she would 'send the Indian Army to Sri Lanka to create a separate Tamil Eelam'. Vowing to destroy Sri Lanka she claimed that an 'independent Tamil Eelam is the only solution, we will fight to attain it." She openly supported thousands of Tamil Nadu fishermen poaching in Sri Lankan waters and spent many hours writing letters to get the thieves released so that they could continue with their thievery. She fought for the release of the Sri Lankan Tamil terrorists who were involved in the assasination of Rajiv Gandhi.

Mixing her racist politics with sport, she effectively banned the Sri Lankan cricket team and other Sri Lankan nationals from playing in Tamil Nadu. Under her watch Buddhist and Christian pilgrims from Sri Lanka were attacked and beaten by Tamil Hindu extremists without a word of condemnation.

Her death will leave her chauvinistic and racist followers devastated, but as far as Sri Lanka is concerned one of the country's enemies has died.

You can rot in your political correctness and be blind to the misdeeds. The future generation will pay for the misdeeds.

ill of the dead,soul,pleasure,misery,shameful...etc ==> Nonsense

Its childish arrogance to think that you are the only one with 'sight' while other are 'blind'.

People get the leader they deserve, so if very they suffer, its for their own deeds and misdeeds.

So you can take solace in the fact that your current misery was well deserved too.

She was a powerful force resisting Hindian domination. I am afraid her successor may not have the courage and force.
Karunanidhi is also only months or a few years away from death. His son Stalin does not seem to be a nationalist. So there is emptyness too.

We have to think what to do to protect Tamil interests.

Ask for a separate country.

She was melkote brahmin more closer to puritanical hinduism. but when it comes to politics power is the only religion.

She might not have followed Dravidian ideology
No party worth its salt in TN can claim that. Dravidian movement just morphed into a trojan horse to claim power.
Dravidian movement can be likened to JP movement in bihar which simply provided means for likes of Lalu to emerge on coat tails of good leaders.

some hindus want to be buried... most are cremated but its not a big deal as such.... one of my relative was buried because it was her last wish... am talking about 70 year old conservative rural hindu...

.
RSS-BJP forces wants to dream that they can capture Tamilnadu by destroying Dravidian parties. Not going to happen.

Dravidian movement was necessary in that social context of old Madras Province. It did break down dominance of some communities, and to this day no member from powerful castes have ever sat on the CM chair. O Paneerselvam being the first (From dominant Thevar community) but he was given the post on account of Loyalty more than anything else.

Thank fully Dravidianism took pride in Ethnicity rather than outright Communism in neighbouring Kerala where those people hated anything Indian values. But they took pride in Tamil Values and tradition, and only exception was being atheism and breaking social barriers.

However I strongly believe TN should never choose national parties in state elections. The regional parties are good enough and they can take sides based on the benefit an law can bring to the state of TN, maintaining neutrality.

I hope some one can suggest a good book on Dravidianism where I can understand what it really means. Maybe @Joe Shearer . Any references?

It start with right ideas and ppl but seems it lost its way afterwards. Probably TN might take pride in keeping national parties at bay and giving federalism a good name. But corruption is taking toll due lack of choices during election.

Same for BJP and Congress as well. In which state corruption hasnt taken place? Can anyone tell confidently that no corrupt practises have ever taken place in Modi's Gujarat?

My whole family have been in DMK, and me personally not a fan of Amma. Last 6 years Industrial growth have stagnated in TN, due to corruption and many opening factories in Sri City, just 50km north of Chennai. Even with all these stats TN is still top 3 in new Industries and FDI. The defining factor is, our politicians allow administrators to work freely and get things done.

If a bridge costs 100 crores, 20 crores goes in corruption while 80 crores get the bridge done, whereas in other part whole 100 crores are eaten up. Things are turning better even in MP, Rajasthan, even in Bengal. I dont think an national party would have brought such growth in TN. Economics say when Congress was ousted from TN in early 70's, TN was worse in poverty and development than many NI states. Regional parties led the way inspite of corruption. Same goes for AP under NT Rama Rao.

Let me tell you a small example. Before BJP swept to power in Maharastra, the Congress party in power that time favoured GST, and even told that to Finance Minister regarding its eagerness to join it. But Central high command wanted state congress to oppose it which they did. They acted upon the whims and wishes of the central command and not able to secure the interest of the state they got voted from. TN is free from such compulsion. They are free to choose and oppose laws thet benefit the state. And that is federalism.

Infact even UCC should be made state subject.
