Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has emphasised that, despite a reference to Taiwan in a joint statement released after his recent meeting with US President Joe Biden, there is no possibility of Japanese forces being committed to any military contingency surrounding Taiwan.

In response to a question from an opposition politician in the Diet on Tuesday about the details of Japan’s commitment to Taiwan, Suga replied that the statement “does not presuppose military involvement at all”.
Analysts say Japan’s constitution would block the military from taking part in combat in the event China attempted to take Taiwan by force, although Japan could provide a range of logistical and rear-echelon support to the United States.

USA to Japan: when the war starts you absorb China's nukes first and I will join the war after

Japan to USA: no, when the war starts, you absorb China's nukes and then I will join the war after

So true.. No one will come to Taiwans aid not the Japanese and certainly not the US

Where does the Japanese PM say that Japan will definitely not get involved?

He just says that it is not definite that Japan will intervene and so China is on notice that Japan may join US to defend Taiwan if China tries to invade.

Smart from the Japanese, just like the USA, as they are deterring China just by hinting they may defend Taiwan while committing to nothing.

Read again, Japan's constitution prevents them from fighting non defensive wars. This is considered expeditionary war and come on, if they get involved, it will mean the destruction of Japan.

They have one of the oldest populations in the world, and one which is fast shrinking. Where would these troops come from?
Are they planning to go speak to the cloners of Kamino?

Ironically when Japan finally involved itself in another war it may turned out to be another attack on Pearl Harbour.

In history Japan had always opposed the illegal annexation of Hawaii by the US Congress by passing a domestic bill.

So in reality Japan has never recognized US sovereignty over Hawaii and it has always been their silent ambition to drive out the Americans.

Japan actually benefited economically a lot during the Korean War, it can be said Japan was a major winner as it was on path to recovery after WW2. So if America is foolish enough to fight China over Taiwan, Japan will get to laugh at the loss of American lives and crippled US Navy. Ofcourse US bases in Okinawa will be pulverized so Japan will have to suffer a bit but Chinese missiles are very very accurate so nothing to worry Japan.

.
Japanese military itself is not very meaningful, but they are very hard to avoid getting involved in a war with China if the US is getting involved, because if they allowed the US to use their bases in Japan, they are automatically becoming targets for China's armed force.

The article doesn't mention the 2014 reinterpretation of the constitution that resulted in new defense laws which include "collective self-defense".

Both Japan and Taiwan want good relations with China but China is not correct in seeing unification with Taiwan as a correct path.
