There are recent news that Japan has decided to start the manufacturing of ATD-X. The rumors are
1-Development cost of 500 Million USD
2-Requirement of being able to test fly in 2016
3- Name will likely be F-3
4- Domestic components will make up to 95%
5- Completion of F-3 project would mark the initiation of Japanese attempt of 6th Gen fighter with i3cs capability (informed, intelligent, instantaneous and counter stealth) characteristics

I think they should learn how to make a flyable 5th gen stealth fighter before to think about the 6th gen one.

When their Shinshin is going to make a flight test?

So far they have only built a museum dummy.

The Japanese sixth-generation fighter concept, called i3 (informed, intelligent and instantaneous), has seven features that the defense ministry regard as crucial for the fighter to be effective against potential opponents, according to the ministry’s Future Fighter Research & Development Vision, released on Aug. 25.

One feature, jamming-resistant fly-by-light controls, has been introduced in the Kawasaki P-1 maritime patroller, which first flew in 2007. The ministry believes four more features could be ready by 2030:

•Greater stealth than that of opponents, requiring developments in coatings, internal weapon bays and intake design.

•Next-generation high-power radar that detects and tracks stealthy targets, requiring development of advanced integrated sensors and all-around protection.

•Cloud-shooting, in which the fighters fire missiles using targeting data from other sources—for example, each other and early-warning aircraft.

•A powerful next-generation engine with a slim cross-section and heat-resistant turbine discs and ceramic nozzle.

The engine, radar and stealth technologies are in development and should be ready in 2016-20. The Mitsubishi ATD-X fighter technology demonstrator that will fly for the first time in 2014 will be the testing platform.

The next two technologies would be ready in the 2040s: networking with sensor drones that fly ahead of the manned fighters, helping them remain undetected while detecting stealthy targets; and a directed-energy weapon, based on research that would begin next year, focusing on lasers and high-power microwaves.

one more thing the concept will be for air superiority fighter, not a MR. Contractor will be Mitsubishi and Shinshin is expected to replace F-16Cs and F-2s (these are MR...should have been F-15s, or they dont have minds?)

which is what they are doing.... the ATD-X is a fifth gen plane.

seems like the japanese dont have a lot of faith in the f 35..... Good for them - i wouldnt trust in the capabilities of a plane which can only carry 4 BVR missiles(maximum) either.

Source? I agree that Japan have all the needed tech knowledge to build one which is why I"m surprised that they haven't tried to build their own fighters. Some have pointed out that they don't have the experience in building engines. I don't think that would be a problem for them or they could just buy American made engines to cut down on costs.

It is a misconception that believing that Japan as an eletronic giant is supposed to be spontaneously some aviation giant as well.

In fact, their modern aviation industry is still quite rookie compared to China's.
