'It's horrific': Melinda Gates on rapes in India

The most common refrain by man since dawn of history. We are all "fixing".

"was, iz, going,to do, will do, soon"

Identifying the problem is the first step to fixing it, ignoring the problem is the first step to escalate it.. Look at things without the hate in your mind. you will understand :)

The culture is something that needs exposure of superior values and morals.
These men grow up in a society where (rural India esp) women are like cattle and sheep - essentially properties. How will we correct the mentality of these poor states and expose them to better values and lifestyle? the common people themselves have a flawed view of morality. No way of uplifting such a violent society. May be, after 100 years we can see. After the rule of Islamic invaders, they gifted another talent - Predatory mindset about women -rape included. Basically other's women are games/trophies - they can be kidnapped/stealed (typical in rural villages in north?). This is one of the worst thing instilled on their minds.

Not every village , depends on where you are , especially bad in Bihar and U.P, especially U.P since i have been there. But i have noticed it is not as bad in Gujarat,Punjab etc.. form my travels. Really depends on the prevailing local culture...

On a serious note yes. This damn curse has to be acknowledged and then stiff action taken. Also society must absolutely make it known that rape is disgusting, amoral and those who engage in this are the lowest of lows of our societies.

We must always side with the victim. My heart goes to all victims irrespective of where they are including India.

And yes we must not make fun or mock each other on this sensitive subject. Even I have some, albeit low but still standards.

No. This would cause murder to shut up the rape victims. We should perform operations so that Rapists should not be able to rape any more.... If they want a good time, they have to geta visit by big
Leroy in the prison.

Offtopic though: Bill Gates -Melinda Gates foundation "into Eugenics" - any truth? Lucifer is preaching gospel to us?

I am assuming she is upset because bill and Melinda Gates foundation is probably at the receiving end of the NGO crackdown. Those NGO's are into very suspiscious things.

Problem is no one is willing to look at this seriously and in a neutral way. The Rape laws in India are really harsh, and that has had unintended consequences to the point even Supreme court, hight court and Womens foundation are talking about it. NO one is innocent in this big mess...

The Rape laws in India are really harsh

It is well known fact that enforcement is half if not more of deterance. If for example you know you have hanging for murder but enforcement is so weak that 99% of murderers are never caught than actual "bite" of the law will be negligble.

However if you have 15 years for murder but 95% of the murderers are caught and go to prison the efect will be felt across society as the law will carry "traction".

Too many times in our part of the world law is just talk with not enough enforcement. I think the enforcement part needs to be beefed up.

Mod ~ Thank for removing the dirty pest.

That needs time, money, educated policemen, training , faster due process of law. that being said Western world also have the ability to hide its problems quiet effectively.Comparing conviction Rates in Asia to Europe will give you a good surprising answer...

I think it is almost useless to compare rape statistics with other countries in particular if they belong to differant social economic grouping because they will have vastly differant contexts. In Western societies the possibility or chance or potential for rape is far greater simply because woman are more free and enabling circumstances are far greater.

However pushing cases through courts is easier in the West because of more openess and atomized society. In the east nobody will be forthcoming in giving evidence or might retract because of clan pressure. So this makes it more difficult.

However one thing that strikes me about Pakistan is that we do not not invest enough in police. There is no excuse for that. I would rather we sacrificed 100 tanks, 10 fighters, 2 ships and the money spent on police force by first increasing salaries. Investment in police stations and equipment.

The fact that we don't simply reflects the class divide and the priorties of the elite rulling class. The police force is in fact a paramilitary force at the disposal of the elite to maintain the status quo. Enforcing justice is secondary to preserving the status quo.

The weak require justice and the "strong arm of the law" invariably is needed by the weak. The elite just require a force to keep them in their slots.

This can be seen in number of officers seconded to VIP duties in Pakistan.

Rape is a heinous crime, and reading these replies here, is disgusting

Where is this behavior, or confidence in yourself and country to taunt others, coming from? Everyone who has tired to score points in here, comes from a country that has abysmal record on rape. A simple Google search would confirm.

Melinda Gates is using this issue to score points, not just on an anonymous forum, but on a global level.

That's just naive talk. What point do you imagine she is trying to score here?

Why is she using her considerable influence to further make "Rape in India" a talking point across the planet?

The same reason why the Western media headlines about India are usually about gang rape or related topics, to the point where a German professor noted that in Germany, India rape headlines are given the front page, while local rapes are relegated into the back of the newspaper. The reason? Sensationalism and attention-grabbing, which they can leverage into business.

And it's easy to push this image of India across the world, since the consequences are borne by Indian men, not by them.

The result? All those Western nations have issued "travel advisories", warning their women against coming to India. And there will be no shortage of Indians who fully support all this, simply because it's the West (I'm guessing you are an Indian by your posts here).

What are you going on about. She is a philanthropist, in charge, and given the responsibility of a 40 plus billion dollar portfolio to giveaway. She is not a business woman looking to make money by making "rape in India" talking points.

What's with this absurd claim that western media headlines on India are usually about gang rape? - in all honesty, you must widen your reading materials. Image of India is very much vibrant, and warm for us. What kind of childish games are being played here?
