The italian coast guard captured 2 ships in the strait of sicily in this june. They found 20 tons of marihuana on board. 18 sailors have been arrested and face 20 years in prison.
The Indian Embassy has officially asked explanations to our Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Monday, a Senior Executive of the New Delhi delegation in Italy arrived at the palazzo di giustizia in Palermo to meet magistrates who are investigating drug ships.
The indian Embassy calls for the release of the sailors. But against them there are heavy charges: drug trafficking and possession for the purpose of dealing with the aggravating circumstance of large amount at risk 20 years in prison apiece.
The former owner of Foreign Affairs and EU Cfsp new miss Federica Mogherini might also take the ball for one ascambio of prisoners.
Meanwhile the italian foreign office said, that Latorre, the italian marine who was allowed going home for medical treatment, will not return to india.
On Tuesday, the apex court had rejected pleas of Massimiliano Latorre, who is currently in Italy after he suffered a condition similar to stroke in September in New Delhi, seeking extension of his stay in Italy on health grounds. It also rejected the request of marine Salvatore Girone to travel there for Christmas, saying they cannot get such a "leeway".
Meanwhile, Italian defence minister Roberta Pinotti said that the full physical recovery of marine Latorre was "a priority for the government and nothing will be done to jeopardize his condition".
Meanwhile, EU has said that the issue had the potential to impact the overall European Union-India relations and has also a bearing on the global fight against piracy "to which the EU is strongly committed''.
"The decision to deny the plea of Massimiliano Latorre for an extension of his stay in Italy for medical treatment and to refuse Salvatore Girone permission to spend the Christmas period at home is disappointing, as a long awaited mutually agreed solution has not yet proved possible," said Federica Mogherini, who is the new foreign policy chief of EU.
