Italian envoy cannot leave India

danish products are in the market- Muslim market- the boycott thingy was just to soothe the emotions- no official step was taken to implement that-

Big difference-

I wasn't talking about the Muslim countries boycott, I was referring to India's diplomatic & economic cold shoulder to Denmark (on the Kim Davy issue). Been in vogue for quite some time.

.
European union is not one as one believe. Self interest is the line. German, France and UK will not think twice before dumping Italy for India

No they will not-
There is an alternative in form of china more than capable to fill the market gaps india will vacate-
Apart from China- Pakistan and Bangladesh can provide desi stuff trade- The hegemony- monopoly will be lost-

Unless the reason is War such drastic measures cannot be taken- India cant afford that-

.
Very twisted reporting-
wondering whcih news paper is that-

The Italian ambassador cannot leave means he is not sacked/ arrested-
it does not mean he is forced to stay in india-

How can you apprehend/ house arrest a certain Ambassador- or force him to stay- during peace time--
Diplomatic immunity any one?-

No need to rub salt and citrus into the wounds. .

Probably just for local consumption to keep people's nerves calm though you are right - very strangely worded

i hope the difference between a cold shoulder and a complete boycott is clear when you talk about that-

Being the victim of that cold shoulder as well- we do have a bilateral trade going on-
The economic boycott is extreme in any case-

This entire episode is a backroom deal between congress and Italy. SC is unnecessarily getting into this.

Matter of fact is, India is a very poor country with billions under the poverty line. The Italians have paid heavty amount as compensation to the victim families. And they are silienced.

Better to end the issue here. :frown:

Let's wait and see SC has summoned the ambassador on 18 March. Indian Express says: The diplomatic options discussed include minimum diplomatic contact with Italy — like India has with Denmark in recent years over the Kim Davy extradition issue — or snapping all diplomatic ties which includes closing its mission in Rome and asking the Italians to shut theirs in India, cancelling business contracts with Italian companies and stopping all diplomatic visits by either side, sources said.

If we shut their embassy then the ambassador will no longer be the ambassador, anyways he is not leaving India, so then we can try him instead of the marines :omghaha::omghaha:

Italian view: Marò, premier indiano: "Conseguenze per Italia". Terzi: "Arbitrato internazionale, fondati motivi" - Repubblica.it

The year 2012, marked by tensions over the issue of the two sailor, has already seen a drop in business relationships: if Italian exports to India fell by 10.3%, imports from India fell by 21.5% .

Interesting note in the comments section:

behavior of India and that virtually 'intervened on Italian territory (the ship drawn by deception) arresting the two maro 'in defiance of all international treaties.

That would be to expel him, by declaring him persona non grata. But does the Indian government have such guts? One of the marine is friend of Sonia's friends. And this white woman rules India. MMS is a rubber stamp.

expelling the itallian ambassador may result in the expulsion of indian ambassador there and the indians living there might get disturbed because of the following consequences its not so easy as u speak and its not something whichs related to sonia gandhi this have much bigger picture so i dnt think india would expel him.but lets see what would it do

Where did I suggest that a complete economic boycott was necessary or even welcome? I was pointing out that Italy has billions at stake even with government contracts alone & that would certainly be on the line. A diplomatic cold shoulder can lead to curtailment of economic opportunities as a follow-up action.

How come the local Indians will suffer, if Indian embassy remains without an ambassador for a while?
That reasoning is well short of merit (in yr post)

Domestic law cannot supersede the Geneva convention. That has been India's argument throughout & you don't want to set a precedence wherein Indian diplomats & leaders are slapped with cases in foreign countries.

Yes, but the stakes for Italy are high here

Italian marines row: Envoy 'barred' by Supreme Court from exiting India

Restraining its ambassador Daniele Mancini from leaving India, the Supreme Court on Thursday sought explanation from Italy on its refusal to send back the two marines, accused of killing two fishermen off Kerala coast last year.

A Bench led by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir issued notices to Italy, its ambassador and the two marines separately, seeking their explanation.

Attorney General G E Vahanvati mentioned the matter before the court and said the recent developments were required to be brought to its notice since the reprieve was granted by the apex court.

Stunned by Italy going back on its sovereign assurance on the return of the Italian marines facing trial in India for killing two Kerala fishermen, the External Affairs ministry on Tuesday had summoned Ambassador Daniele Mancini and read him the riot act.

His expulsion, sources said, is being actively considered as one of the options New Delhi can exercise in response to Rome's sudden decision that was announced late on Monday. Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai held meetings with key MEA officials as the government considered its options through Tuesday.

The diplomatic options discussed include minimum diplomatic contact with Italy — like India has with Denmark in recent years over the Kim Davy extradition issue — or snapping all diplomatic ties which includes closing its mission in Rome and asking the Italians to shut theirs in India, cancelling business contracts with Italian companies and stopping all diplomatic visits by either side, sources said.

Besides, the government is also talking to legal experts and law ministry officials to explore legal options.

It's not a question of 'guts'. decalring a person expelled with affect their mission and credibility, not ours. But it will also automatically mean an end to all negos with regard to the marines.

How many times India has expelled a western Ambassador in the past?
Not even once, as for as I remember, because India is timid. And then there are pending or probable similar tit for tat actions on similar lines.
Negotiations wont end, because Italy WOULD send a new envoy anyway.
This is not how international diplomacy works!
As for the credibility, Italians reneging on their given pledge to India, they have lost it - hook line and sinker.
So said one of their largest selling newspaper yesterday.
