Its people who are "cowards" or "strong brave", not religions. Religions can be pacifist, tolerant, accepting of diversity...
Or they can be intolerant and opposite of everything mentioned above...
I guess he meant the latter, just the limited vocabulary failed him.

You know brave people don't need shelter of religion to feel strong , they stick to their religion in spite of heavy odds and persecutions .
Its the only cowards who convert to an completely alien religion in face physical threat or psychological allurements.
Todays Hindus are the off springs those bravest of brave who didn't gave up Hinduism against heavy odds of many centuries long muslim rule when they suffered unmeasurable violent persecution but overcame them all to see Hindu religion thrive as its today.
