ISI & CIA Chiefs to meet up in Washington

Signalling a possible thaw in Pak-US relations, ISI chief Lt Gen Zaheerul Islam will visit Washington next week to hold talks on counter terrorism cooperation and to improve the fractured bilateral ties.
Islam's first visit to US comes two months after he had postponed an earlier scheduled trip in May citing "pressing commitments".

The ties between the two allies had spiralled down over the cross-border NATO air strike in November last year that had killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.Islam, who was appointed in March, will hold talks with CIA chief David Petraeus, and other senior American officials to discuss matters related to counter-terrorism cooperation.

According to Pakistani media reports, Islam will take up the contentious issue of drone strikes carried out by spy planes in Pakistan.Pakistan is likely to push a plan to replace the CIA drone campaign with Pakistani F-16 strikes, and eventually its own armed drone fleet, a proposal that US officials say they have rejected before.

The visit of Islam is seen as a major development in bilateral ties which has gone through a very rocky patch since the last 18 months.A number incidents including the US unilateral raid in Abbottabad that killed Osama bin Laden had send the relations spiralling downward.

The biggest blow came after the November incident following which Pakistan closed down NATO supply routes to Afghanistan and a number of US military personnel were asked to leave.
Back in May when Islam had postponed his visit, US and Pakistan were still deadlocked on a number of issues – particularly the reopening of NATO supply routes.

The supply routes finally reopened on July 4 after US officials expressed regret over the loss of Pakistani soldiers' lives.

Waste of time. Attempting to persuade us to depend on Pakistani F16s to hit on the Taliban and Al Qaeda. Anybody can see how wrong this picture is? Something similar happened before when the U.S. provided intel to Pakistan to attack the sites. Know what happened? The Taliban took off.

Well drone strikes are not doing any favors to anyone by killing "anyone with beard over the age of 14". Its in American interest to cooperate and find a solution to this problem if they want to exit the theater in a way which keeps taxpayers happy , give hollywood some movie stories and re-elect obama.

As an alley Us was supposed to provide that intel to ISI only not to their lapdog talibans who are attacking Pakistani forces andcivilians. Shame on US and CIA. We know we can't trust US.

Obama and the CIA disagrees with you from what I see so far. And it ain't killing anybody who has a beard and is over the age of 14. However there are dead Taliban youngsters as well as videos showing little boys with weapons. I've seen many Vietnam war movies so I don't really care how happy Hollywood is.

We know we can't trust the Pakistanis with intel provided because you just warn the Taliban and they take off. The CIA has been watching with UAVs and know how it works. Why do you think they didn't want to warn you about the raid on Osama? Think about that...

Hope you dint forget that Taliban is a JV product of both USA and Pak together and not just USA !!!

Not that old ploy again !! You know the saying “Fool me once…”. I hope the naive US commanders don’t fall for this idea again. It is obvious that the terrorists are hurting and Al-Qaeda leadership has been decimated by the drones. They will use their influence in Islamabad to try and earn themselves a reprieve. What is amazing is the amount of popular support in Pakistan for the terrorists !!

Yes, the 'popular support' has made the Talibans/militants kill over 35,000 Pakistanis, including thousands of security personnel, made them target sitting generals' families in mosque, blow up expensive airplanes in military bases, destroyed ISI buildings...

One -could- argue that there are a few moles who, for ideological or money reasons, help the militants but the militants are MOST CERTAINLY not backed by the state of Pakistan. They need to be identified and take out of rotation.

We dont trust the Americans either. They kill at will and they have killed a lot of Pakistanis. The acrimony and animosity is mutual and we have no sympathy at all for American point of view.

The militants in Pakistan are backed by Americans from across the border. They encourage and fund them to directly attack our military. They do this to teach Pakistan a lesson to fall completely in line with US interests in the region or else... This is what happened in November too. The ISAF forces (read US) deliberately attacked the military check post. It was not a random attack. They kept attacking for 2 long hours.

Can you please present any evidence to support your allegations? Without evidence, all you have is your opinion which is a right for everyone to hold.

Not sure if he has any 'evidence' or not by I find the claim that Pakistan provides some kind of blanket security to the Talibans/militants (as can be seen in posts above) a grave insult to Pakistan and an utterly idiotic idea. Whatever the strategic or logistical reason may be about Pakistan attacking or not attacking N. Waziristan cannot undo the death of 35,000+ Pakistanis and the destruction of image and economy.

Rather than be insulted or call anyone foolish, one must ask for proper evidence consistently and politely, no matter who is making the accusations, and refuted as necessary, wherever possible.
