ISI and CIA Chiefs to meet up in Washington.

. .
We all know the importance of communication in any relationship. The relationship between the U.S. and Pakistan snagged a bit due to the unfortunate incident last November. The breakdowns in our relationship helped the terrorists to regroup and launch attacks on both sides of the border. They have killed many innocent people including women and children. The reopening of the GLOC s and the upcoming visit by Lt Gen Zaheerul Islam represent what we hope is a return to close cooperation against our common enemies. We hope to see both nations working together to curtail terrorist activities. Such cooperation can only serve to benefit the region and its people – people who have suffered enough in the hands of these terrorists.

We have always emphasized the importance of working together and in the past we have seen great results in terms of defeating the terrorists. We are approaching a crucial phase in the WOT, and the need of the hour is to regroup against our common enemies for the sake of bringing peace and stability to the region.

Lt Gen Zaheerul Islam is a much better professional than his predecessor. I am sure he will be able to put the cooperation back on track and lead the way forward for a better and futuristic relationship based on trust and mutual cooperation.

i wonder if they'll land at Andrews AFB or land at Dulles Airport

if Dulles, I should gather a gang of Pakistanis and organize a flag ceremony for our 3-star Comrade

Interesting.. Pakistan and the U.S. need to find a win win situation for both sides.. where mutual interest is expressed..

.
Waste of time. Attempting to persuade us to depend on Pakistani F16s to hit on the Taliban and Al Qaeda. Anybody can see how wrong this picture is? Something similar happened before when the U.S. provided intel to Pakistan to attack the sites. Know what happened? The Taliban took off.

and everytime we launched mil ops in and around the God forsaken border, your forces withdrew from their positions and allowed TTP to slip into A-Stan

works (or doesnt work i guess) both ways

Pakistani public wants to have a working relationship with the US as it goes back decades. American high command must understand that Pakistan has run out of capacity to sustain this conflict. Our total defense budget is less than the total budget of US marine crops alone. Not to forget we wish to convey that Pakistani govt may want something different but Pakistani public wants a relationship based on "mutual interests" and does not want to serve US interests while scapegoating its own as it has historically done. Lastly Pakistanis do not wish to become a battleground for US containment policy of China.

Pakistan: Let us hit drone targets

By Nasir Habib, reporting from Islamabad

The new chief of Pakistan's spy agency will urge the United States to end drone strikes on Pakistani soil and identify targets that the country's security forces can then attack, a senior intelligence official said.

Lt. Gen. Zahirul Islam will deliver the message during a meeting with the head of the CIA on August 2, said the Pakistani intelligence official, who did not want to be named because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

"You (the U.S.) develop a target and let us hit it," Islam will tell CIA Director David Petraeus, the official said. "It would be ideal if the U.S. provides drone technology to Pakistan."

Islam's call will continue an ongoing refrain from Pakistan about the CIA's controversial drone program. Pakistani officials and lawmakers have demanded an immediate end to the drone strikes, saying they have led to civilian deaths.

In keeping with its general policy, the CIA would not comment on meetings between the Director and senior foreign officials, including whether the Pakistan intelligence chief will be in Washington on August 2nd to see the CIA Director.

A U.S. official did offer some perspective to CNN's Pam Benson on what actions the U.S. thinks Pakistan could take to combat terrorism.

“The US supports the Pakistanis taking more responsibility for ridding the tribal areas of al-Qaeda and its militant allies. There are several actions the Pakistanis could offer that would have an immediate impact on reclaiming parts of their country from al-Qaeda, the TTP, and the Haqqanis for good," the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity when discussing intelligence matters, said. "The Pakistanis clearly have had, and will have, opportunities to show they are serious about taking actions with a practical effect on rooting out terrorists

Pakistan To Propose Pak Drone Strikes On Militant Targets With US Monitoring

7/24/2012 6:05 AM ET
(RTTNews) - The new chief of Pakistan's spy agency is expected to urge the United States to end drone strikes on its soil amid reports of yet another aerial raid by unmanned U.S. aircraft that killed 11 suspected militants on the south west of Pakistani tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

Reports on Tuesday quoting a Pakistani intelligence official said Director-General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lt. Gen. Zahirul Islam would also ask CIA Director Gen. David Petraeus to help Islamabad identify targets that the country's security forces could attack, during a meeting with his American counterpart, scheduled for August 2 at Langley.

The much-awaited visit of Zaheer to talk with Petraeus on counter-terror cooperation and intelligence sharing was called off unilaterally by Pakistan two months ago during adverse developments in bilateral ties.

"It would be ideal if the U.S. provides drone technology to Pakistan," the new ISI chief is expected to tell Petraeus, according to the Pakistani intelligence official who refused to disclose his identity.

If CIA will swap information on key militant targets such as Taliban, al-qaeda hideouts and training camps in the tribal areas, the Pakistani security agencies will then deal with the situation accordingly, says the proposal to be presented to the CIA chief.

On the other side, to ensure compliance, CIA can use any mechanism to monitor the Pakistani operation on the ground, including drones.

Pak news channel Geo TV reported on Monday quoting government officials that missiles fired by U.S. drones destroyed a compound in North Waziristan, which allegedly housed a group of militants fighting under Hafiz Gul Bahadur, a prominent leader of a Pakistani Taliban faction based in the volatile tribal region.

The Pakistani government had lodged strong protest against the unilateral U.S. raid into the country that killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden last year, and continuing U.S. drone strikes on its territory.

But during his visit to Afghanistan last month, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the United States was running out of patience with Pakistan, which continued to provide safe havens for militants to launch attacks on its western neighbor.

Thank you. Silent majority of Pakistanis want the same thing (just ignore the rabid islamists and leftists' rants) Good working relationship between our two militaries. This is the only way we both can eliminate large pat of militancy and reduce the unnecessary casualties to both Pakistani and US soldiers.

Hope this meeting is fruitful and bears good tidings for both of our nations.

peace.

1. Agreed. Pakistan and US armies and the people had close relations since 50s. We housed American Airbase in Budaber, Peshawar. This airbase was used for many cold war facets including the overflights of U-2 spy planes. Cold war clearly showed that both Pakistanis and American people were together in defending freedom and liberty in the region.

2. Totally disagree. What are your basis Mr. Aero? Our tribal areas is being raped by Arabs, Tajiks, and Talibani menace. Our army never ran out of capacity to kick these ba$tard Taliban out of the area, if not for Islamists and leftists who have opposed Pak army in every which way. Pak army has enough capacity to cleanse the region many times over.

3. Typical Islamist propaganda. FYI. Pakistani government wants the same thing as silent majority of Pakistani people. it is just that Islamists and leftists have used street violence and suicide bombing in order to demoralize Pakistan. And your post supports Islamists.

4. Strongly disagree. Has China appealed for Pakistani help? Have China signed a defense treaty with Pakistan? The answer is big fat NO. Then how on earth you can go around shouting slogans against some perceived containment of China from Pakistani border? How?

Pakistan has no strategic value in the defense of Chinese Industrial or agricultural heartland. We just have a piddly little road that connects Pakistan to China's remote border region. Will China suffer serious supply issues if this road is closed? Heck no! Have you seen the map? What can Pakistan do to protect Beijing or Shanghai or GuangJo? What? throw arrows at the ones who may attack Beijing?

So please think before you write about so called China-containment and some sloganeering about Pakistan protecting China.

that's all for now.

....

silly stuff.

Why do we need Americans to identify targets "within" Pakistan. For cryin' out loud, this is our f-ing area. We are supposed to know every inch of it.

If we have the will, we can watch it from the ground, and monitor it from the air. Just mount couple of day/night cameras even on Air-force trainers and fly them day and night. Get the f-ing pictures, find the enemy and kick some Talib @rase.

The only thing we need is to coordinate with NATO before we send ground troops to kill or capture Taliban. Why? because they can stop them from running across the border.

heck Pakistan should sign a treaty for hot pursuit upto 10-15 kilometers into Afghanistan if NATO troops are not available to close the gaps in the border.

We have enough man power for ground attacks and enough pilots to fly daily sorties to monitor from air.

Let's quit haggling on silly stuff. Pakistan's very existence is on the line.

peace.
