Iran Unveils New Catamaran Capable Of Carrying Helicopters

It displaces X tons. Is that standard or full load displacement?

.
Le Fantasque ("The capricious one") was a large destroyer ("contre-torpilleur", "torpedo boat destroyer") of the French Navy which served during the Second World War. To this day, her class is the fastest type of destroyer ever built. Speed: 45 knots. 3,200–3,400 long tons (3,300–3,500 t) full load

Pegasus class Patrol Hydrofoil Missile (PHM) Speed: 48 knots. 241 tons.

Freedom class LCS Speed: 47 knots , displaces 3,500 metric ton
Independence class LCS Speed: 44 knots 3,104 metric tons full

And how many have a 10,000 km range?

Iran would still need to develop a different type of propulsion to get a ship that size to 50 knots and according to press TV this ship only has a max speed of 28 knots...

Actually, there aren't many smaller warships with that kind of range at significant speed (18 knots or more).

A big 12,500 ton fld Slava class cruiser (I've left out nuclear powered ships) has a range of just 5556 kilometers (3,000 nmi ; 3,450 mi) at 18 kn.

The Arleigh Burke-derived South Korean Sejong the Great class destroyers do 10,200 km (5,500 nmi; 6,300 mi) at 20 kn. The Burke-derived JMSDF Atago class 9260 km (5000 nmi) at 20 knots. The Burke derived JMSDF 9,500 ton Kongo class.8,300 km(4,500 nautical miles; 5,200 mi) at 20 knots (37 km/h; 23 mph). A big 8,315 to 9,800 ton fld (depending on Flight) Arleigh Burke destroyer has 8,150km (4,400 nmi ; 5,064 mi) at 20 kn.

The 8,500 ton fld Type 45 Daring and 7,050 ton fld Horizon classes AAW destroyers have ranges in excess of 13,000 km (7,000 nmi ; 8055 mi) at 18 kn. Horizon class does 6,480 km (3,500 nmi) at 25 knots. The Indian 7,400 ton P15A Kolkata class 15,000 km (8,000 nmi ; 9,200 mi) at 18 knots

The Danish 6,645 ton Ivar Huitfeld does 17,000 km (9,000 nmi; 10,000 mi) at 18 knots. The two groups of FREMM frigates respectively do
  • France: 6,000 ton and 11,000 km (6,000 nmi; 6,800 mi) at 15 knots
  • Italy: 6,900 ton and 12,300 km (6,700 nmi; 7,600 mi)) at 15 knots
India's 6,200 ton P17 Shivalik class does in excess of 9,000 km (5,000 nmi) at 18 kn. The Dutch 6,050 ton Zeven Provincien class Air Defence and Command frigate and the German 5,800 ton F124 Sachsen class have a range of 7,400 km (4,000 nmi ; 4,600 mi) at 18 knots. The Spanish 5,800 ton F-100 Alvaro de Bazan class frigate 8,334 km (4,500 nmi; 5,179 mi) at 18 knots. Like the bigger Bazan class, the Spanish built 5,300 ton Norwegian Nansen frigate does 8.334 km (4.500 nmi ; 5.179 mi) but only at 16 knots. South Korea's 5,520 ton Chungmugong Yi Sunshin Class / DDH-II Class destroyer is similar to the Euro-frigate of this generation: 7,400 km (4,000 nmi ; 4,600 mi) at 18 knots.

The 4,900 ton JMSDF Asagiri class does 14,870 km (8,030 nmi) at 14 kn.
The 4,900 ton British Type-23 does 14,000km (7,500 nmi) at 15 kn
The Indian and Russian navy 4,035 Project 11356/M has a range of 8980 km (4,850 mi; 4,210 nmi) at 14 kn and 1,600 mi (1,400 nmi) at 30 kn.
The 3,760 ton South Africa's Valour class (MEKO A200SAF) does 15,000 km (8,000 nmi) at 16 knots
The 3,600 ton German Brandenburg class does 7,400 km (4,000 nmi ; 4,600 mi) at 18 knots
The 3,600 ton French LaFayete class can do 7,400 km (4,000 nmi ; 4,600 mi) at 15 kn and 17,000 km (9,000 nmi; 10,000 mi) at 12 kn.
The 3,500 ton Indian P28 Kamorta class 6,000 km (3,450 nmi) at 18 kn
The 3,320 ton Dutch Doorman class (M-frigate) can do 9,000 km (5,000 nmi) at 18 kn
The 3,200 ton Singaporean Formidable class reaches 7,780 km (4,200 nmi) at 18 kn.
The Chinese built Algerian navy 3,000 ton C28A does 6,480 km (3,500 nmi) at 16 kn.

The 2,400 ton Chinese Type 053H3 does 9,300 km (5,000 nm; 5,800 mi) at 15 to 16 kn
The 2,400 ton Turkish Ada class does 6,500 km (3,500 nmi; 4,000 mi) at 15 kn

In addition, long range is typically found in specialized patrol ships e.g. the 3,500 ton Danish 'ocean patrol frigate' Thetis with 16,000 km (8,700 nmi ) at 15 kn, or the US 3,250 ton WHEC (Hamilton class) and the 4,500 ton National Security Cutter / Legend class: both 19,300km (10,430 nmi ; 12,000mi) at 20kn.

So, the number of major surface combattant ship that can do over 45kn is very small. So is the number of ships with a range of 10,000km or more at substantial cruise speed (18 knots or better). If they have a range of (over) 10,000km, this is very likely at low cruising speed (lt 18 kn, likely lt 15).

Iranian authorities/strtageists started a new approach or as we call it THE NEXT PHASE.

The new strategy is to create effective and hardcore infra for both navies of Iran to become an assault-force, open sea capable. The plan is to make two sets of new hardware for Iranian forces:

1- Long-range, open-sea, Oceanliner conventional navy ships based on current conventional designs. These have to be able to be sent anywhere around the globe when needed. Main ships of this category will be ready around a decade from now. Jamaran, damavand, Sahand, Shiraz, Khalije Fars navy ships are all experimental steps toward that designs... There are a whole range of sub-projects going on toward that X set of ships.

2- Long-range, open sea, ocean liner unconventional navy ships based on new concepts (local or imported concepts). These set of ships will play the backbone role for IRGC. A set of totally Iranian designs are ready to be set into production lines. There are two platforms for this type of ships. The 3000 Tonnes, 114 m, oceanliner will be the platform one. A set of ships will be created out of these two platforms.

Multiply an stealth unconventional ocenaliner warship combined with other unconventional weaponry and carriers with unconventional submarines, missiles, and of course airplanes (F-313!!?) and place it on a patrol route near US main land...

Iran needed the nuclear deal... needed this leader... needed Jehadi managers... Needed IRGC... Iran needed sanctions... Iran needed Iran-Iraq war... Iran needed all to rise again... To become something her name deserves after 1000 years...

Iran can not follow Western designs... Iran has neither the budget nor the stupidity to follow a scheme that never ends... Iran suceeds with a modern 2016 style warship... USA is working on a 2026 stype warship.. This tale chasing will never end... The system must be changed and this is exactly what Iran is after... Change the rules if you can not play by those rules..

There are so many codes in recent speeches of Iranian authorities... Those who need to learn the codes will learn it... others are best seat down watch it...
What I know for sure that the IRGC navy ships you are talking about will be equipped with strong and advanced weapons!

I know one type of weapon that will be installed God willing in some if not all of the IRGC navy ships that will make enemies very sad and friends very happy!

I don't think it's a good idea to talk about it!

I'm sorry!

this Catamaran was for carrying passengers , they just used it for propaganda ....
this is nothing special but it was a good experiment for our engineers and designers ....

this is not the 1st Catamaran ship built in Iran the passenger carrying version Iran built a few years ago that could carry up to 230 passengers + 70 tone payload & even before that we built a smaller version

Iran has the hall down but we need a new propulsion system

Iran is rich in natural gas + the fact that Iran builds gas turbines (And the MGT-30 should do fine) means that this is the best way forward for Iran and technically Iran has all the tech it needs to build a larger ship capable of 50knots the just need to put the right parts together

And if it was me I would start by basically fusing the Nazeri to the back of the Sina class (I don't mean that literally rather in construction) and equip the Nazeri with 2 powerful gas turbine powered water jet engines and in combined with 4 diesel engines that the Sina has that baby should fly
Better yet add a generator to the MGT 30 and you can replace the 2 of the diesel engines with electric ones

Ok, so what is the intended purpuse/use of this craft?

Clearly, it can carry personnel. Clearly, it can land a Bell 206 Jetranger or equivalent 1.5 ton helicopter. Perhaps it can also handle a heavier Bell 204/205/UH-1. However:
-There is no 0-level main deck > what is the purpose of having so much open space between the hulls. Can it e.g. launch RIBs from the next up deck level? I see no shipboats anywhere else. So, without some boat, it is fully dependent on the helicopter for the movement over personnel while at sea (unless coming alongside)
-There are no visible weapons installations, nor does there seem to be space reserved for any. It doesn't have any other sensors than navigation radar.

Is this 'just' a trial or experimental or research vessel?

Its most likely for experiment. The first use that came into mind when I saw this was covert insertion and extraction of Special forces. the Helipad and RHIBs support that.
I wonder if it could carry a SDV

Apparently, this ship classifies more of SWATH (Small-waterplane-area twin hull) than a classic catamaran? I don't know much in this field so I can't say whether that claim is right or now, Also, the SWATH design is more advanced if I am not mistaken.

It's wave piercing boat hall not SWATH it's basically a wave piercing version of the SWATH
