Iran says offers India bigger role in strategic port | Reuters

They haven't allowed one since forever. And why would India, which isn't even that strong yet, be a bodyguard of Iran?
Not bodyguard but Indo-Iranian military cooperation. I don't see why that is such a big deal? Different countries are already cooperating with each other to further their strategic goals.

As I mentioned earlier, both India and Iran see tremendous value in military cooperation. They have focused on three major areas of mutual concern: first, regional and international security perspectives; second, the security and defense policies of India and Iran; and third, issues related to the international disarmament agenda.

This doesn't mean India is going to act like a bodyguard as you mentioned. Far from it. This is a convergence of strategic interests - military as well as economic.

Chuck the naval bases man, I want more Iranian restaurants in India. And guess some Indian education institutes will open up in Iran. As I notice students from Iran studying here.

If Congress kills Iran deal, sanctions would lose India's support: US

White House has cautioned a hostile Republican controlled Congress against killing the historic Iran nuclear deal saying loss of support from countries like India would lead to a collapse of the sanctions regime.

"The key to the success of this latest round of sanctions has been the aggressive enforcement of countries around the world, including countries that aren't even a party to this particular agreement -- countries like India, Japan and South Korea," the White House Press Secretary told reporters Friday.

These countries "previously relied heavily on the importation of Iranian oil -- and by scaling back their oil purchases that had a negative impact on Iran's economy but also had a negative impact on the domestic economy of those individual countries," he pointed out.

"So the point is that the sanctions regime would collapse if Congress were to kill this deal," Earnest said.

"And what that means is it means that the international leverage that we have previously used to reach this agreement would vanish."

"The second is, Iran would still obtain the financial benefits of sanctions relief -- something that our critics have described as a financial windfall," Earnest said.

"And the problem is, Iran is going to get all of that money and the United States doesn't get anything for it."

Asked to explain President Barack Obama's claim that 99 percent of the world community supports the deal, Earnest said "it was backed by "the Germans, the British, the French, the Chinese, the Russians, the South Koreans, the Japanese, the Indians."

"All of the countries that were involved in pressuring Iran to come to the negotiating table in the first place," supported the agreement between the six world powers led by the US and Iran to limit Tehran's nuclear programme.

"The fact is, if the United States Congress were to successfully kill this agreement, it would have a terrible impact on the standing of the United States in the world," Earnest said.

This is an agreement not just between the United States and Iran; this is an agreement between the United States, Russia, China, Germany, the UK, and France, and Iran," he said.

It was also "enthusiastically supported by, as the President said, 99 percent of the international community."

"And for the United States, because of a congressional action, to isolate our country on such an important issue would be devastating to our standing in the world," Earnest said.

This is the third time, Obama administration has cited the case of countries like India to sell the deal to its Republican critics as also to bring around some members of Obama's own Democratic Party who have expressed reservations about it.

Earlier this week, National Security Advisor Susan Rice told PBS that if the Congress failed to approve the deal "Countries like Japan and India that have paid an economic price to implement these sanctions would no longer feel the obligation to do so."

A White House official also made a similar argument saying when the US "went around to Europe, to China, to India, to South Korea, to Japan, and got them and others to reduce their purchases of Iranian oil, the express purpose of that effort was to get this deal."

"So if, having gotten this deal, we then kill it, it is hard to see why those countries would then go back along with additional sanctions," the official said.

WTF are you guys talking about ?

guys look , we Iranians are very patriotic , thats why 6 of the biggest nations in the world licked us for 12 years to get this deal done .

we love india and we appreciate our relations , but even the talk of a foreign base in my homeland makes me go nuts . this is very insulting , please refrain from even talking about it again .

on topic : very good news for the whole region . kudos

As usual...some Indian posters leave in a la-la land....They think that if you talk about good relation with any nation, that means some one should
I am just trying to help him to be reasonable. I know fully well he only represent himself. No need to worry! :)

Forget about military..arms..bases...these are bullshit topics raised by certain Indian members...India always takes trade and investment as a parameter to build its relation with any nation rather than arms dealing...If arms and military relation is a parameter, then Russia would have been the best of the best relation with India which is not ..
So i feel, with sanction got lifted, more economic activity will start happening between India and Iran.

@OrionHunter @saurav

What significant benefit do the Iranians get from allowing India to set up a Naval (or Air force) base in Iran?

Nothing...And do you seriously think that India will make a base in Iran???...Are you really crazy to beleive that post?...

It can be very good news If India one day ignore American sanctions completely.

. . . .
But India is not building infrastructures like posrts and roads in those countries,
Well, actually....

$52bn Indian investment in UAE - Emirates 24|7

The cold hearted reality is that india is our enemy

Pakistan has gone to great lengths to break india in Afghanistan

All this is pie in the sky stuff, sanctions haven't been lifted and fully functional port and network hasn't been built

But just like iran would act if we suddenly gave israel or the USA access to Balochistan it is imperative we counter india at every turn

We might as well accepted the Saudis offer and bombed the houthis to shit if only our national interest and not iran was our concern
Have you ever thought why India is your enemy? Is it because this narrative serves Pakistan's feudal overlords?

Pakistan has started 4 wars with India, pursued polices to hurt India's people, economy and image and has cast itself as India's omnipresent nemesis to what end? India would, at worst, ignore Pakistan was it not for the constant hostility it was receiving from their Western neighbour- this is an objective analysis. Whereas, Pakistan seems to need to keep poking India wherever possible. It is quite obvious India has zero intention of breaking up Pakistan, it simply wants to maintain the status quo.

The status quo is the occupation of a muslim state Kashmir.

India ended peace and cooperation in the subcontinent in 1947 when it chose to occupy a muslim majority state on the borders of Pakistan.

This has been the root cause of hatred and emnity

The occupation of kashmir continues hence the conflict and hatred continues

Unless a resolution is found then india remains a enemy state and it becomes incumbent upon Pakistan to counter the threat india as a enemy poses

Let one thing be very clear: India will not seek and Iran will not give a Naval Base in Chah Bahar.

Both Countries value their Sovereignty very highly and do not accept the idea of Foreign Forces operating freely within their respective countries........ unlike some other Countries in the Neighborhood.

Chah Bahar must be fully operationalised and expanded because Iran will be the biggest beneficiary of the Port.
The benefits to Iran arising out of Chah Bahar are threefold:
1. Iran gets independent access to the Sea that bypasses the Straits of Hormuz that can be affected by GCC countries at the instigation of third-parties.
2. Chah Bahar gives direct access to Northern Iran and C.A.Rs entirely through areas directly controlled by Iran by herself.
3. Chah Bahar will become the end of a 'life-line' for Afghanistan; not at the mercy of forces that want to subjugate Afghanistan.

All of those will enable Iran to regain her rightful place in Regional Geo-Politics.
Now let us wait for the time when USA and China seek to use the facilities in Chah Bahar ! :D

@haman10; don't worry my friend.... Martians will land on Earth, before India sets up a Naval Base in Chah Bahar !!!!
