Iran says offers India bigger role in strategic port | Reuters

.
Indo-Iran trade at the moment is ~$15 Billion which is not satisfactory considering the potential both countries have, Now with lifted sanctions, I am certain that It will be doubled in next 5 years. Long live to two great ancient nations!!!
PS: To few Pakistanis, A country need not to choose one among two when it comes to business. Hope even Pakistan will open up it's businesses with India.

KKKKKashmir... Will keep on going like this till the end of this world. Let everything else take a back seat!

Iran has a choice, India OR Pakistan. I hope they do not make a mistake in choosing.

India has managed good and cordial relations with both Israel and Iran.
No reason to believe why Iran too can't when it comes to India and Pakistan. In any case, as has been discussed to death in posts above, Indo-Iranian relations are far more than a sea port and don't think India will ever do anything that Iranian foreign policy doesn't allow. Thats how it is and thats how it should be.

With sanctions down, i believe we can double the trade within 2-3 years.

What significant benefit do the Iranians get from allowing India to set up a Naval (or Air force) base in Iran?

Iran yesterday has asked India to invest $10 billion for development of Chabahar as an alternative to Bandar Abbas. Iran has been receptive to this project as its main port, Bandar Abbas, where the bulk of Iran’s 18,000-strong navy is located, suffers from heavy congestion and vulnerabilities. Overlooking the Strait of Hormuz, it also faces constant US patrolling and surveillance. India’s long term expectation would be to gain access for its navy there.

Both India and Iran see tremendous value in military cooperation, even if to date, few large-scale military interactions have taken place. They have focused on three major areas of mutual concern: first, regional and international security perspectives; second, the security and defense policies of India and Iran; and third, issues related to the international disarmament agenda.

India and Iran have enjoyed good maritime relations that include high-level political and military visits, joint-naval exercises, naval technology cooperation, and maritime infrastructure developments symbolized by port development in Chahbahar. Naval cooperation between the two sides dates back to the mid-1990s when the Indian Navy helped the Iranian Navy to adapt four Russian-built Kilo-class submarines for warm water conditions in the Persian Gulf.

Most important is the fact that there is mutual concern about the security of sea-lanes from and to the Gulf through the strait of Hormuz for which it would be necessary for establishing a joint Indo-Iranian naval presence at Chabahar. The presence of Indian engineers at Chahbahar and of Indian military advisors and intelligence officials in Iran confers to India a significant access to Iran.

 so you know more about Iran and its govt than Iranians themselves? And by the way why would IRAN even consider that? Do you have any enemies in common? Is Iran your vessel state? Is Iran dependant on india? Have you ever even conducted a joint military exercise?

Boy .. you ppl sure like to dream fiction...
See my post above. Your rant will be put to rest! :P

@OrionHunter
Those Persians were successful in blocking six big nations for years for their own benefit.
What is the chance of India in here?
Why should we create problems among the GCC?
Iran is an independent country .
And India is still a developing nation you know that.
Check out my post above. :D

And how do you know? Do you make strategies and doctrines on behalf of the Iranian government? There's more going on behind the scenes than the public will ever know.

acc. to iranian constitution they wont allow any foreign countries to have a millitary base in there country.. lets presume something that doesn't seem real....

They haven't allowed one since forever. And why would India, which isn't even that strong yet, be a bodyguard of Iran?

Many of our Pakistani friends were jumping for joy thinking that Iran will now ask India to pack its bags and leave after they signed the nuclear deal! Now this news means more egg on their faces!! The way things are going, they'll need to start importing eggs from India!!

Ok, seriously, note the words, 'strategic port' in the report. That could even translate to establishing an Indian naval base there!

I thanked this post for the first part.

Iran, like any other self respecting nation, would not allow any foreign country to have a base in their country and we have already seen the resolve of Iranian people in the last couple of years. A lesser country would have buckled down under the pressure of these sanctions a long time ago. Would you like to have a foreign base in India? No govt in India would make such a mistake. Similarly the term strategic does not mean military interests alone. Just like we like to keep a neutral position in the Iran Israel relations, Iran would do the same vis-a-vis India-Pakistan. The port would enable us an access to Central Asia and it would be used for economic purposes alone, not military.

A normal military cooperation thats all.
We cant expect more than that like Ayni or Farkhor base.
Iran wont allow a foreign base in their land .Perhaps they may allow some of our equipmentsbut complete control would be in their hands .
I cant agree with your entire points.
