Iran says offers India bigger role in strategic port | Reuters

There is absolutely no choice here. We are not a part of Indian/Pakistani stand off and don't meddle in the conflict either. That's why we will try to maintain very good relations with both. The same way we don't tell Pakistan: Either us or Saudis.

You see my friend, by allowing India so much investment opportunities in Iran, you make the leadership of Pakistan guess your intentions. This will not be very good for a neighbour of a nuclear nation.

Well, I think the concept of a nuclear umbrella is vastly overblown. As if a few nukes stationed on somebody's soil means they're untouchable. Besides, I'm not sure India is willing (yet) to be so assertive outside of it's neighbouring regions.
Eh...........I was just shooting in the dark.
Well, the concept of nuclear umbrella is the same as nuclear deterrence - i.e to to assure the enemy that despite their best first strike, there will be some nukes left for payback.

Sovereign States don't typically like being given diktat like this.

Why should Iran choose?

What specifically does such a 'choice' tangibly entail?

Dont forget Iran borders the restive regions of our country. That can have a huge leverage on us.

As i have said earlier, India's relation with Iran does not have a military dimension. We are old friends who have stood by each other through thick and thin and will continue to do so despite whatever US or Pakistan says for that matter.

Our primary interests is in trade, commerce and development. Iran can help energy starved India and the investment in port is a factor of that. It's what the Chinese call a win-win situation.

Pakistan has got nothing to worry about India and Iran friendship

Is that supposed to be a threat?

The threat here is Iran getting very cozy with our main enemy. Its a threat for us as you border the regions which are extremely problematic for Pakistan.

Enemy of my enemy is my friend. So is the friend of my enemy my enemy.

Why would Indian investment in another country be an issue for Pakistan?

You want the Iranians to lose out on economic investment because of the insecurities of some Pakistanis? How about Pakistan improve her own economy and make it attractive for Iranian investment in Pakistan and Pakistani investments in Iran?

Enemy of my enemy is my friend. So is the friend of my enemy my enemy.

So Pakistan is our enemy, because it has great relations with Saudis, right?

That could even translate to establishing an Indian naval base there!

Not too fast. Iran will never let a foreign country to have military base in her soil. Not India, nor countries 100 times bigger than India. As far as Chabahar is concerned, what Iran cares about is developing South Eastern Iran which is the least developed province of Iran. Iran simply does not care about India-Pakistan piss contests. If India wants to invest in that area, they are more than welcome to invest as much as they want!

Pakistan has similar leverage over Iran if Iran becomes involved in unrest in Pakistan. I don't see that happening.

Iran is also not as ungoverned as Afghanistan, so the Indians are not going to be able to carry out covert activities out of Sistan without the Iranians knowing about it, and the Iranians have no interest in allowing such activity given the blow-back they would face themselves.
