The multi-ethnic mess that is India has had 24 extra years of independence over BD and BD is ahead in life expectancy and child malnutrition.

If BD became independent in 1947 then it would be streets ahead of India.

BD a nation of 160m can do with multiple deep sea ports. There is more than enough opportunities for JApan or China or any other parties.

These ports will serve BD and neighbouring countries. BD is open for business and everyone is welcome.

Bangladesh is so important to Japan, strategically and economically. Just last year Japan had signed an agreement to pour $6 Billion in infrastructure aid with Her Excellence Prime Minister Sheik Hasina. This year we are expected to sign another developmental accord. Her Excellency Sheikh Hasina has also promised Prime Minister Abe that she would prepare a vast Industrial Park for Japanese businesses.

And she has maintained her promises ! That industrial park, in tandem with the Matabari Port --- is just an example of the large scale industrial cooperation between Tokyo and Dhaka.

This is just the beginning. Japan sees Bangladesh as a natural and profound all-encompassing friend and ally. :)

I see a whole lot of talk about a port that hasn't even been built yet.

Besides, it's small potatoes compared to Gwadar and China-Pakistan Economic Corridor in terms of strategic importance.

Preliminary construction has already begun. And the location is also strategically located to the Industrial Park that Bangladesh has promised for Japan. These projects are the beginning, and considering their being Large Scale / Multi Billion Dollar Projects --- means that we will see long term strategic bonds between Japan and Bangladesh.

The Matarbari Port in Bangladesh is happening in tandem with the Dawei Deep Sea Port that Japan is financing with Burma --- and this will link Burma to the rest of mainland South East Asia --- both the Eastern and Southern Corridors.

@bongbang ---- this is a strategic "lift" for the Southeast Asian mainland region : Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.

And I think Japan should now reform its investment policy and increase our entente with Pakistan. To start, we should start increasing development of Sindh region. In fact, I think that is exactly what is cooking in the works. Remember that Japan has recently promised to invest $110 Billion in Asia. Pakistan will be a recipient of this as well.

Construction of the 18-meter-deep port at Matarbari on Bangladesh’s southeast coast is set to start by January, Japan International Cooperation Agency said in an e-mailed response to questions from Bloomberg News. That’s bad news for a stalled China plan to build a port about 25 kilometers (15 miles) away.

“I’d imagine there’s only room for one port,” said Krispen Atkinson, a maritime analyst at IHS Inc., citing the cost to build railway lines and approach channels. “There are probably political reasons behind it as well. If you’re looking to build a port and want Western support as well, would a port financed by China be the favored option?”

The deal would mark a setback for China in South Asia, where it’s seeking to establish economic and military ties in a region that carries about 80 percent of its oil imports. The Bay of Bengal, a body of water bigger than Mexico, lies at the heart of an area where China, Japan and India are investing billions of dollars to secure economic gains for decades to come.

“There’s a remarkable scramble going on,” said David Brewster, a visiting fellow at the Australian National University in Canberra, who called the bay a “twin” to the South China Sea. “The Japanese clearly see themselves in competition with China, and control over ports is seen as important. I expect the Japanese are very happy about this.”
