What's new

International Math Olympiad 2014 results are in! (India fails again)

I seriously doubt that.

I'm not actually yellow either, it's just how people say it. :P People don't actually mind because yellow is a color very closely related with Chinese culture, red and yellow are lucky colors for us, and we consider ourselves descendants of the Yellow Emperor and the Flame Emperor.

I've never quite understood why some have stereotyped East Asians as yellow. Am yet to meet someone as heavily jaundiced as to have yellow skin.

To many Indians too, Yellow and Red are auspicious colours. Stems from the usage of Turmeric and it's lime-soaked variant used in religious and social practices. Our State-flag is also derived as homage to this combo.:)

Well, Mediterranean people already have "olive", so we got "yellow". :cheesy:

Plus, Chinese people originated from the Yellow River, and we are the descendants of the Yellow Emperor. So I guess it just came to be accepted that we are the yellow race, like you I have never actually seen anyone who was properly yellow before. :P

@Ayush still uses an abacus to do his engineering calculations ! :o:

Whereas when I asked @levina apa to teach me Differentiation as part of my Calculus studies....she instead gave me a course in Anthropology extolling the virtues of 'Diversity' & how 'Discrimination' or 'Differentiation' as I called it was a bad thing ! o_O
I was always good at "differentiating" and "integrating". 8-)
And whoever told you that I would give you gyaan for gratis. :p::bunny:

I'll help you. :enjoy:
Just one problem though. He too whitey whitey. Me Indiano, darky darky.....me likey likey White Kashmiri! Me no sharey sharey with you! :mamba:

You know I think red is a color which can be seen from a distance because of its low frequency and ergo it was used by our ancestors in the flags.
I know that might sound ignoratio elenchi. :-)

Orange reminds me of ...well you know what. :D

Liar! The flag of Hong Kong has no yellow in it.:p:

What is the significance of the stars with the CPC though? As in, they symbolize unity under CPC, but why stars?

Well @Wagner is an American that's for sure

He's as American as Arya Desa is Indian.:sarcastic:

I think being "white" doesn't really have anything to do with skin color. There are plenty of South Asians for example (North Indians and Pakistanis) who are much "whiter" than many white people from Southern Europe.

Ashwaria Rai for instance.

The HK flag is our regional flag, not the national flag. :P Our national flag is the PRC flag.

As for the stars, they represent the unity of the various social classes and ethnic groups in China.

The reason I asked was that USSR also had a yellow star on it's flag. Just wanted to know if it had anything to do with Communism or had an altogether different symbology in China.:)

Well the stars and the moon especially are important in Chinese culture (we have a lunar calendar), however as for the design of the flag, I think it is not a coincidence that it was very similar to the flag of the USSR.

USSR flag:

The Cold War days were very ideological, so there is no doubt that Communism played a big part in it.

Anyway, I love the current PRC flag. It's origins don't bother me at all. And now that the USSR is gone, we are the only major country with a flag that looks like this. :enjoy:

Almost all members of Ukrainian team are ethnic Russian. That is, in the Mathematical Olympiads Russian - the strongest of the white race.

A lot of former Soviet states tends to do well as well. I think even after the dissolution of USSR, many of the education practice and more importantly, people, remained and that's what give these countries an edge in IMO.

The Chinese need to forgo the dreams that USA and white man will grant us access to their elite circles. Today, USA is in a low level alliance with India to contain China, that explains why Indians are given access elite sphere. Also high caste Indians and white man are both Aryans and Indians caste system is the most consummate form of white man racial discrimination. So white man and Indians have the same culture and they can assimilate to one another.

Despite acing far better than Indians academically, Chinese are not even given the level of access to the lowly programmer positions in USA. Go see in Microsoft and especially Qualcomm.

The only hope for oversea Chinese especially those in white man land is a strong China.

This is quite possibly one of the dumbest thing I've ever read on pakdef. Why are you asians soo inscure around whites?
