What's new

International Math Olympiad 2014 results are in! (India fails again)

I refer that simply from name only.

I have no idea in reality whether they are the first generation, or whatever generations they are, or even Hokkien or other information.

I just indicate that they are standard mainland Chinese spelling.

BTW, they represent singapore and they are for sure with singapore nationality.

Whether they recognize themselves as China is not my concern as well.

For example, there are Chinese people who are living overseas for generations and still proudly think they are Chinese though with foreign passport. (e.g. 陈嘉庚...)

There are also Chinese who detest being Chinese and love foreign passports to death.

Those are beyond discussion at this point.

It is simply a reference based on simple information.
It can be. But if you google this guy a bit more, you find his real chinese name.

Ling Yan Hao 林彦豪.
http://www.moe.gov.sg/media/press/files/2013/08/Annex-C.pdf

This is a typical native Singapore.

Ling = 林 is Singaporean

Singaporean Chinese identity is base on Hokkien and Cantonese mainly, unfortunately, fuxking Kuan Yew tries very hard to make us banana.

Being a Singaporean Hokkien/Taiwanese, I am a sympathetic to "Taiwanese race". I fully support that enshrining of "Taiwanese language" in Taiwan.

I plan to send my kids to Singapore for education. Which Junior High School/ High School is good at Math? My kids are studying at Singapore curriculum School here in Bangkok.

The elite schools and their Maths Olympiad school sheet are as below. If you want your sons to be all rounded and rub shoulders with elite families, then I think the Raffles and Chines high (Hwa Chong + Nanyang girls) are more suitable.

NUS high schools are more niche although they do ace in Math and Science.

Also if you want to train your children in Math Olympic, there is questions and solutions book for sale. Click the link below.

Guys, India's poor performance is not because India doesn't care about the IMO. Give me a break!

This article is from 2009:

Two city lads impress at Math Olympiad
TNN | Aug 4, 2009, 03.43AM IST

PUNE: Two city students, Gaurav Patil and Sameer Wagh steered India to an impressive 28th rank at the 50th International Mathematics Olympiad held in Germany recently. The duo, in their maiden opportunity won a bronze and silver medal respectively as India jumped four ranks ahead from 31st last year.

The six-member Indian team won three silvers and two bronze medals in total. Gaurav said, "This was my maiden international Olympiad and was a great experience. Not only did it expose us to international level competition but also gave us an opportunity to interact with participants from other countries. We could exchange ideas and know how was their way of studying and how different it is from India."

Gaurav, a student of Modern College of arts, science and commerce developed interest in Math when he joined the city-based Bhaskaracharya Pratishthan when he was just eight years old. "Their way of teaching mathematics is completely different. Geometry is taught in a completely different fashion and that developed a different view to the subject. After that I just fell in love with mathematics and started competing in Olympiads."

A total of 104 countries participated in the competition that was held between July 10 and 22 in Bremen in Germany. S A Katre from the University of Pune's Mathematics department accompanied the team as an observer.

Katre said, "Taking into consideration last year's performance of India, we have done well. This year, more teams participated and yet we managed to improve our rank. Although, there was a time when we stood within the top 10 and have been slipping in terms of overall rankings."

Sameer, a class XII student of Garware college, said, "I was expecting a gold, but had to settle for a silver. However, I have another opportunity next year and will give my best. Prior to the Olympiad, I started preparing keeping two aspects in mindfirstly, solve as many problems as possible and secondly presentation. At international level, the latter plays an important role and I gave special attention to it."

A country with India's population can't even find six bright students who can ace the IMO all because of the oh so difficult IIT exams? Come on...

China # 1
India # 39

.
All these Maths Olympiad champions but not a single invention by China used by the rest of the world in centuries. Test taking does not equal inventions. India has more invention potential than China despite them finishing behind China in test.

What? What about Single-mode optical fiber, Maglev wind power generators, and Electronic cigarettes?

Are these not in widespread usage across the world?

Not that it needs to be widespread, some of our best inventions, like the world's very first ASBM carrier killer ballistic missile (DF-21D) obviously cannot be used across the world in a widespread manner.

Interesting to see that you are now cheering for India over China.

not exactly. ... just few schools show interest to participate. .. There are more talented students in govt rural schools... but these tests just used by some corporate school for just show off and attract more rich kids...

Also this is the list for most prominent awards in Mathematics around the world.

Wolf Prize in Mathematics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abel Prize - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fields Medal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

By seeing the list I think Chinese are training students specifically for IMO. Which in my opinion is not a good idea.
You forgot POLYA prize.
Indian mathematician Nikhil Srivastava named joint winner of 2014 George Polya Prize - Economic Times
Indian, two others win Polya Prize for solving complex maths puzzle - Firstpost
Chew on this for a min op. The op clearly titled this thread to belittle Indians.

Indians are similar to Jews in creating disruptive technology. Look at Indians in the US.

You would think that with a population of 1 billion+ people, India would be able to assemble a formidable math team that could place higher than 39. Yes, 39. Right next to Armenia.

Instead not only does India get slaughtered by China, the Koreas, Japan, Vietnam, even tiny Singapore and Hong Kong, but it's also consistently outperformed by much smaller European countries like Hungary, Romania, and Serbia. Even a modest-sized Third World country like Peru has a better IMO track record in recent years than India.

Where are all these Indian mathematical geniuses we hear so much about? :-)

i cant understand why are u specifically targeting India, i bet the toppers of your Olympiad will fail miserably in the entrance examination of the IIT.

They beat their chest at such things such as IMO or other contest yet when it comes to proper innovation they are clearly lacking. Where is the oriental Bose or Raman? How come people supposedly so smart have little when it comes to theories in mathematics?

Go google, Chinese has a total of 3 Polya Prize winner long times back while Indian only just won.

The Indians talk and talk and never look into details.

Chinese have more Nobel prize winner in natural science than Indians. Chinese have 7 winners while Indians have 5, including a Pakistani.

Chinese

Tsung-Dao Lee
Chen Ning Yang
Samuel C. C. Ting
Yuan T. Lee
Steven Chu
Daniel C. Tsui
Roger Y. Tsien

Indians
C. V. Raman
Har Gobind Khorana
Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar
Venkatraman Ramakrishnan
Abdus Salam, Pakistani, so I consider him to be "the so-call Indians"
