International Math Olympiad 2014 results are in! (India fails again)

I never know that China is so strong on this before see this thread
during the past 15 times, China got 12times No.1 and 3 times NO.2

@Nihonjin1051 @Indischer Let's get back to the point. It hasn't been famous somehow in India and especially among parents they awareness on this is zero. Once the parents gets awareness on IMO, trust me India will be with in Top 3 positions.

Take it Spelling Bee, from 2000 onwards Top 3 from Top 5 goes to Indians.

Olympiad isnt really that big here, people in that age group, concentrate a lot on JEE, school, and other college exams. This I would argue is brought up by our system college admissions where even a score of 0.01 can change your life entirely, so you are encouraged to spend every waking moment training for those exams and nothing else. The guys who attended the olympiad at school were never serious about it, but decided to attend it as it would be practice for other exams, and also fun. There is a mild interest, but not more than that.

If olympiad is made a criteria for some top college or something, just watch interest increase and hence the rankings go up.

A friend of mine had once represented India in the Chemistry Olympiad when it was held at Greece. All he did was self-study after school-hours. Got about ZERO help from any teacher or lecturer in this regard. The City Municipality honoured him AFTER it was reported in a newspaper that he'd secured 2nd Rank in the Olympiad. I'm inclined to say this hasn't changed much at all.

Erm, if these sample questions are what JEE questions are like, then JEE difficulty is leagues below IMO.

IIT Papers : IIT Question Papers

I cant answer any of those questions, but I havent touched chemistry for 4 years.

Not exactly comparable, seems like JEE test you on how knowledgeable you are about general science stuff, where as IMO requires only basic math, but tests you on how good your problem solving skill is.

It was boasted quite a bit when I was in elementary school (in the early 90s), but after the so many first places it just isn't news anymore.

I do not know how true is this. But most national team has state coaching. It is amazing that India has no state coaching for IMO.

There weren't any a decade ago. Students simply took the Olympiads just to get a measure of how well they could do in IIT-JEE examinations.

I didn't look at the chemistry questions, but I did went back and try the physics portion, it looks to be pretty straight forward. You really only need to compare the math portion and like I said, these types of exams (be it GRE, JEE or Chinese colleague entrance exam) are designed to see if you qualify and IMO is designed to determine who is the best. So understandably IMO difficulty will be significantly higher.

Info on Wikipedia contradicts lots of the claims here made by the Indians:

The Indian National Mathematical Olympiad is a high school mathematics competition held annually in India since 1989. It is the second tier in the Indian team selection procedure for the International Mathematical Olympiad and is conducted by the Homi Bhaba Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) under the aegis of the National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM).
  • Students qualifying the INMO are automatically eligible for admission to the B.Sc. (Hons) Mathematics course in the [Chennai Mathematical Institute].
  • Since 2008, INMO awardees applying for B. Stat or B. Math courses of the Indian Statistical Institute are directly called for the interview without having to write the written test.
  • INMO awardees are also eligible for an NBHM scholarship that currently stands at about Rs. 2500 per month, if they continue their studies in mathematics. They are also offered a 4-year programme of training in Mathematics thru correspondence and periodic contact with a chosen faculty. The programme is also available to INMO awardees who do not pursue an undergraduate degree in Mathematics but have special interest in the subject. They are offered an annual cash award of Rs. 9,000 subject to satisfactory performance in the programme.
  • Students who make it to the IMO are eligible for the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) fellowship provided they pursue their studies in the science subjects in India. The fellowship amount stands at Rs. 4000 per month.
  • Indian team members who receive a gold, silver or bronze at IMO are given cash awards by the NBHM of Rs. 5,000, Rs. 4,000 and Rs. 3,000 respectively.
  • All travel expenses for the IMO Training Camp and all expenses for the IMO are borne by the Ministry of HRD,Government of India.

The very fact that none of the Indians here even mentioned this exam is a testament that it is not very famous. All Indians swear by JEE. I don't know how many know about INMO.

India International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp • Art of Problem Solving

Just googled and found that India does provision public coaching to IMO.

The INMO awardees are invited to a month long Training Camp held in May every year at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education(HBCSE) in Mumbai. INMO awardees of the previous year(s) who have not joined any university/college and who have satisfactorily gone through postal coaching throughout the previous year are invited again to a second round of training and they constitute the Senior Batch. On the basis of four selection tests through the Camp, a team of the best six students is selected from the combined pool of junior and senior batch participants to represent India at the IMO. Each selection test comprises of 3 problems to be done in a time of 4 and a half hours. Moreover, before the selection tests, two practice tests comprising of 3 problems each are held for the Junior Batch students but they are meant for practice and do not reflect in the final selection. The best 6 students comprise the Indian IMO team for that year and they are invited to pre-Departure camp at HBCSE before departure to IMO for training.
