Two containers of onions imported from Myanmar, India's alternative market, have reached Chittagong port. This is the first consignment of onion to become LC in the country through Chittagong seaport.
This was followed by another 118 tonnes of onions from Pakistan. There are also onion import pipelines from Turkey, the Netherlands and Egypt.
On Tuesday (September 29), 57 metric tons of onions were unloaded from Chittagong port. Kyle Store in Chittagong imports this onion.
Chittagong Plant Quarantine Center Deputy Director. Mohammad Asaduzzaman Bulbul said the first consignment of onions had reached Chittagong port. These onions came from Myanmar.
It is learned that traders have taken 322 permits (IPs) for importing one lakh 46 thousand 554 tons of onions from the plant quarantine center at Chittagong seaport.
Meanwhile, the wholesale market in Khatunganj is relieved by the news of onion import at the port. Onion traders say that there will be no onion crisis in the country.
India stopped exporting onions to Bangladesh on September 14 without any announcement. After that the price of this daily commodity started increasing in the country's market. At that time, to control the price of onion, the concerned people suggested to import onion from the alternative market of India. However, Dhaka also contacted New Delhi at the diplomatic level to continue onion exports to Bangladesh.

DOn't know the exact reason, but onion price shoots life a supersonic missile in current season in India. It might be one of the reasons.

Good share. I am glad BD is increasing trade with Pakistan.

The title is a bit misleading, can you add BD there somewhere?

Pakistan is better but Bangladesh to stay away from Myanmar.

Why did India stop the exports?
DOn't know the exact reason, but onion price shoots life a supersonic missile in current season in India. It might be one of the reasons.

Inflation concerns.

Most onions in India are grown in Maharashtra which is ruled by Shiv Sena/NCP/Congress.

They increase onion prices before every election.

The prices are going up now because of the Bihar elections.

Prices in India will come down starting mid November after Bihar elections.

I hope the Pakistani-Bangladeshi trade in onions is here to stay so Bangladesh does not suffer this type of disruption again.

It will also create better understanding between the two nations.

@mb444 Bangladesh should impose ADD on Pakistani onions.

Whats your point....did you give it to us as charity?

You want freedom of action to damage our export and want a free ride? You are barking up the wrong tree.

As with most things BD finds its own way to solve issues. As with most agri products we will increase our production. We are blessed with the most fertile land in the world.

Pakistan should look to sign a long term contract with Bangladesh, permitting the capacity is there, instead of this temporary arrangement.
Yes, a very good proposal. A steady export to BD needs a steady production in Pakistan. However, Pakistan should keep on producing more because this is the 2nd year in a row that India being unable to export. Pakistan supplied us also last year and now this year. Both countries' trade ministers should sit together and find out ways to get supply of Pakistani onions to BD.

I think, being an exporting country, Pakistan should take initiative aggressively. Whatever our govt says about producing another 1 million tonnes extra will not materialize in a short time.

The GoB said similar things last year as well. May be, the wet soil here does not produce high quantity. The size is also very small comparing to MM, Indian or Pakistani onion.
