Indian state offers prizes for sterilisation

Women in Rajasthan offered chance to win food processors and cars in controversial effort to slow baby boom.
Last Modified: 06 Dec 2011 06:35

India has 1.2 billion people and is fast catching up with China as the world’s most populous nation. In an attempt to slow down the baby boom the state of Rajasthan, home to 68 million people, is offering prizes in exchange for sterilisation.

Now women can win anything from food processors to cars in exchange for being sterilised.

This latest effort by state officials has raised controversy as the procedure is still viewed with suspicion after the government introduced a forced sterilisation program the 1970s.

Al Jazeera's Prerna Suri reports from the western state of Rajasthan.

. . . . .
it's one more cog in the system, the state also needs to promote child development and education.
only the combined effort can make a significant impact on slowing the growth rate

btw our growth rate has been declining already, but we need to slow it down even further. kudos to govt for creative thinking.

. .
State can give lavish gifts for sterilization but not to start a small business or even food. That is the solution ?

I was answering his question about India suffering from overpopulation.

Besides state gives loans to rural people to start business.

Here in Australia we have baby bonus, where you get 5000 dollars everytime you have a baby:cheesy:

Preventing poor from breeding is common sense ? You are saying that they are useless eaters ?

There is no mention of 'prevention' or 'poor' in the article. No one is against the woman's wish to breed more children, but will be rewarded if she becomes part of the nation's resolve to control population growth

. .
By this already birth rate has declined from 6 children every woman in 1950 to around 2.5 as on today.

And all should praise India that at least it is not force full like in some country.

On contrary Govt is motivating Male sterilisation more than female like offering increments or promotions in there Jobs.

Preventing poor from having more babies is common sense. You'll understand if you have some. At least luring them with gifts is better than forcible abortions that your friends carry out en mass.

Then I guess it is not good enough

Your country is also suffering from the same thing by your own resource capability. Its a common problem in South Asia. We need to bring rationality. But then again, we cannot force everyone to sterilize like China. Here things have to be done in a manner of persuasion. Otherwise things get really messy, believe me.

in the civilised world, it's called family planning. bachhe do hi acche.

In a civilized world a gov takes care of all its citizens. Prosperity is birth control in itself

Resource distribution and management yes it is a problem. Population I don't think so
