Indian official refuses to be civil at the ICJ
Global Village Space |

Deepak Mittal, an official of India’s Ministry of External Affairs, refused to shake the outstretched hand of Mohammad Faisal, Pakistan’s DG for South Asia and SAARC.

Amid rising tensions, delegations from India and Pakistan came face to face at the International Court of Justice on Monday. This display of passive-aggressive hostility highlighted the tense atmosphere which pervaded the proceedings.

Mr. Mittal had previously shaken hands with Pakistan’s Attorney General but then refused to shake Mr. Faisal’s offering a namaskar instead.

This goes to show the depth of animosity which has penetrated the relations between Pakistan and India. Even at an international forum, representatives are not civil.

It would have been uncivil if he had looked away & not acknowledged the Pak official at all.

But then considering the source of this article its ok - nothing better can be expected.

Declining standards of journalism.

A namaskar is an Indian way of greeting, equivalent to a handshake. Sensationalisation of non event. I guess its a boring day in the newsroom.

But Modi makes a point of shaking the hands of white Westerners and even forcing them to hug him. If you want to make excuses at least put some thought into it.

Indian way of greeting only came to his mind the second time? First time was he representing Pakistan?

Who knows who cares. Its making a mountain of a mole hill.

he could have simply reached out and shook his hand.
Why? do the Brits always say namaste when they come to India? Or do they do aadab when they go to Pakistan? And if they don't its not taken as an offence. Its a matter of preference.
