DUBAI: The man who committed suicide by jumping off the world's tallest tower Burj Khalifa has been identified as an Indian, the Consulate General of India here confirmed on Wednesday.

The 38-year-old, who jumped off the high-rise yesterday, was identified as Athiraman Kannan from Tamil Nadu and Dubai police is investigating the circumstances around his death.

A statement from the Consulate General of India said: "An Indian national, Athiraman Kannan, fell from Burj Khalifa and died on May 10, 2011. Thirty-eight-year-old Kannan was from the state of Tamil Nadu and was an employee of Arabtec, working as a cleaner in the building".

Dubai Police had yesterday said that the man jumped from an air vent on 147th floor and landed on a terrace at the tower's 108th floor.

The consulate said investigations on Kannan's death are currently being undertaken by the police authorities.

"The Consulate is in touch with the concerned authorities and will extend all assistance in sending the mortal remains to his family after completion of the required formalities," it said.

This is the first recorded suicide since the building was completed last year.

Oh, you mean that visitors go up (and have free access) to climb into the 'air-vents' of the building?
Any one can go up to the 'Observation Deck' of the Empire State Building (as I have), but it is impossible to leap off from there. OTOH, no visitor can get access to the 'air-vents' of the Empire State Building.
BTW, was this man a visitor, does not seem so; he was an employee. So I guess the maagement of the Burj Khalifa will need to scan their employees for suicidal tendencies (if at all it is possible) before they let them in. That's got nothing to do with visitors.

In Dubai, they take your passport and make you work as a slave in the desert heat. Poor fella, but he went out in style.

It is sad that they go in hopes for their families and end up as slaves. Many people dont even tell their families about their jobs as it is humiliating. Mental frustration builds up as their company confiscate their passport preventing them from looking for a better job.

what makes a man to end his life in such way``! its not like he is doing something has huge responsibility and enormous stress of cleaning???!

What if his company is not paying for the job he is doing, no passport, no money etc

That could hardly be the reason. More likely that it was due to inhuman treatment.
