What's new

Indian Defence Budget for 2012-13 hiked to 1.95 lakh crore ($39 billion)

30 billion is Pakistan's entire annual budget, half of which is spent on repaying debt taken from international organisations.
30 billion?
I thought 200billion...

30 billion?
I thought 200billion...

Its not even the size of their country's GDP. And it will take 2-3 years for them to take their GDP to US$ 200 billion.

sooo a poor country like india will use more than 17% of her resources to support the weopon industry of Russia & Israel...

not good move

BTW provided current indian trend half of this money will definetely goo army & govt pockets....

cz with tht huge buget why still indian army is short of weopons as their army cheif said...

India provided US$ 40 billion subsidy to its poor people and it will be around US$ 50 billion this year.

Plz. stop discussing about pakistan budget.

#offtopic : some facts

1. Pak budget is ~$180bn
2. Their def budget is around 4.5% of GDP = ~$7.5BN

Plz lets us not discuss it furthur.

India's GDP growth is currently at 6.1%.

And they are increasing their defence spending by 17%.

It looks like a very good decision. :D

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

6.9%(not 6.1%) is the real GDP growth rate.

To get nominal GDP growth rate you need to add inflation, currency devaluation and monetary expansion to this figure which would apply in this case as increase is nominal(Budget is not Indexed).

http://economics.about.com/cs/macrohelp/a/nominal_vs_real.htm

The nominal GDP growth rate of India is 36.55%

http://www.atimes.com/atimes/South_Asia/MB04Df01.html

so in real terms there has been a decrease in Defence Budget.

Good, good. Of course a considerable sum of this goes to upkeep of current force but a considerable amount will go to modernisation. When you consider the cost ofl arge defence procurements like MMRCA are spread out over a long period of time and paid in installments not one huge sum this budget can be used to sign and pay initial instalments for A LOT of new projects- expect news of M777, LUH,Apache, C-17 follow on, C-130 follow-on,P-8I and Chinook deals all VERY soon with other deals like MMRCA a bit later this year.

Actually it's really 6.9% growth and the future of Indian economy looks VERY bright with all outside estimates of growth being revised UP for coming years, India is expected to touch 10% annual growth by 2015.

30 billion?

200 USD is somewhere near GDP size but 30 Billion is annual budget presented in National Assembly by Government of Pakistan out of which some 9 Billion is taken away by Army (directly/indirectly) and huge chunk of remaining in spent in repaying debt of international organisation. Last year India increased defence budget by 11% and Pakistan responded by increasing it by 12%, let see what will happen this year.

Yes. :cheesy:

Our GDP growth for 2011 was 9.2%... and the increase in our military budget was 11% (a gap of two percent). We can get away with this, because our defence spending almost entirely goes into our own indigenous defence industries.

India's current GDP growth is 6.1%... and they are increasing the defence budget by 17%. Not to mention the fact that India's defence budget is used mostly to buy foreign military equipment.

This is not necessarily a negative thing. If India goes to war in the immediate future (e.g. In the next few years)... then India will benefit a lot from this strategy.
Finance minister has announced growth at 6.9% to &% in the 2011-2012 fiscal not 6.1%,it was only for quarter 3.

Does anybody has any idea how much money goes to army ,navy and air force separately??

It varies year on year but recent trends have been higher percentage going to IAF whereas typically it was IA in the future maybe IN will get more. But with defence. Udget increasing year on year and economic growth being so significant all armed services are going to see HUGE increases in how much $ they have to play with.

Problem is spending the funds allocated in the defence budget, every year there seems to be funds sitting in the bank for one reason or another.

Yes but as has been reported, this is being improved year on year and the 2011 defence budget saw the lowest return of allocated funds in recent times and there is a positive gradient in this regard.

I really like the job A.K. Antony is doing as Minister of Defence he seems no pushover.

I will only be happy if GOI makes an emergency defense fund and put all the money that is unused from the previous financial year into that fund year after year. Last time 30 % of the money that was allotted for capital expenditure was unused. I mean who cares how much money is allotted, its just a number on paper. Rest of the world thinks India will be spending 35-40 billion$ while in reality the lazy a$$ MOD will sit in their AC offices and sign some limited deals and give back 30-50 % of the money.

Its effecting the modernization drive of armed forces. This money could also be invested in mutual funds to increase it annually and profit can be used annually and if some year we are able to spend the whole defence budjet and need some extra money we could use this fund or in case of war we can use it.

I think MOD should also change their staff and include some people from all the services of armed forces simply because the people who are taking decisions in MOD has never ever used INSAS in their whole life, then how can they tell which 155mm gun is good for army and which is not.
