Indian CBG to have 7 Escorts

Wow gr8 news :)

We should add amphibious assault ships to at least one CBG too.
Amphibious assault ship has no role in CBG. These ships operate in different situations &conditions?

.
Those subs are the main reason IN can't operate in South china sea. But almost all their subs are short ranged, and cannot come anywhere near andaman or IOR. They have only four subs that have that range, and those are highly noisy and of a very old generation, comparable to what USSR fielded in the 70s. They can be easily detected and neutralised by the P8-Is or other modern ASW assets like the kamorta class corvettes. And those four are the only ones that have the legs to come even close to Indian interests.
Only Kilo class,Song,Yuan class & Qing class in diesel electric segment & nuclear subs pose threat to Indian navy. In comparison we have around 11-12 subs to counter them. So they have around 40 to 45 strong sub fleet as per Indian navy standards. & this can't be ignored nor navy is ignoring this. From 2015 onwards there will be reduction in the rate of gap(only rate not absolute no because they are & will induct subs much faster than us, only the rate of speed will come down).

IMHO I think a future IN CBG will look like:

1-2 Destroyer (P-15A)

2-3 Frigates (1 Talwar and 1-2 P-17/P-17A)

1-2 Corvettes (P-28)

1 SSK/SSN (P-75/Chakra)

1 Fleet replenishment ship (Deepak Class)

note the article said at least 7 other ships so the figures are fluid and the CBG will change depending on mission, region, threat level etc

Even still this is some force and will easily dominate the IOR and beyond. At the time the IN is fielding such a CBG there are literally only a handful of nations able to match/counter this formidable force!

I think a future IN CBG will look like:
1 carrier( every one missed it I guess.Centerpiece for formation.:D
2 multi role Destroyers (Delhi class,P-15). With carrier. Please support AEGIS for destroyer. Frigate(Heavy weight) are only AEGIS in those countries who don't have any destroyers. Frigate are primarily used for ASW role but sometime they have anti air limited capability. Destroyers are multi role & house much more diversified weaponry. They should be AEGIS.
3 Frigates (Talwar,P-17), mainly in outer screen.
No corvettes,no mine hunters because of their lack of sustained speed & endurance at high speed.
1 SSN (Chakra)(only nuclear subs are able to match the speed of CBG. No diesel electric sub even with AIP can't sustain at high speed & endurance.). If possible 2 subs,1 in forward mode & 1 with carrier.
1 Fleet Support ship, with formation.

.
Wow. Pray, tell me how will Indian CBG dominate the IOR and beyond when a US CBG consists of 25 ships and subs and they are operating in IOR and Beyond. They now probably have four aircraft carriers in and around the Gulf. 5th Fleet is stationed at Bahrain and I am sure the remaining three carriers would not have arrived all by themselves.
From which planet have you come buddy?:undecided:
No country in the world operate more than 8 warships in a CBG group. Even US navy. They have 7 ships in tight formation which changes as per situation. When a navy deploys more then 7-8 navy ships in a limited area like you said 25. That doesn't mean that they are 1 single group CBG. There are formation around cruiser, destroyer Even assault ships. There can be multiple battle groups in a limited area as per demand. Hope you will understand it very well.

For sure it will have 1 talwar, 1 shivalik class frigate, 1or2 Delhi or kolkata, 1 replenishment tanker,SSN.

Don't know about komarta class covertee.
Anyways when it will be commissioned

Latest news buddy,it's confirmed that after Arihant class India is going to start the construction of 6 SSN.

The link relates to TOI. It was reported much earlier but I never noticed it. Today I was checking Wikipedia, there I found this news.
Recent news is also old around last January. I missed this one too but when they updated Wikipedia then i came to know about this news. It's 2nd time. Here you go.
Navy wants to have three SSBNs and six SSNs (nuclear-powered attack submarines) in the long term, as reported by TOI earlier. The force is grappling with a depleting conventional underwater arm, down to only 14 aging diesel-electric submarines.
Nuclear-powered submarines can silently stay underwater for months at end, unlike conventional ones that have to surface every few days to get oxygen to recharge their batteries.
India to achieve N-arm triad in February - Times Of India

India intends to build three SSBN and six SSN 18.03.2010
Coming 10-year leasing of Russian SSN K-152 Nerpa to Indian Navy could not conform to India's long-term plans to create sea nuclear deterrence force; the reason is international nonproliferation treaty as for missiles with the range over 300 km and, therefore, Nerpa could not be armed with long-range strategic missiles.
This submarine will be used for protection of the first Indian-made SSBN INS Arihant which will be presumably commissioned in 2011-2012. Armed with torpedoes and Club-S cruise missiles with the range below 300 km, Nerpa would be a kind of silent killer chasing enemy's subs and ships. In the longer term India intends to construct three nuclear-powered ballistic missile subs and six nuclear-powered attack subs. In contrast to diesel electric submarines which frequently need to surface for battery recharging and oxygen replenishment, nuclear-powered subs are capable to stay underwater almost forever. Thus, a SSBN is considered to be the most hard-detectable nuclear missile carrier.
At present, Indian Navy has only 16 obsolete diesel subs while US Navy has 71 nuclear-powered submarines (including 14 SSBNs) and China possesses 62 subs (10 of them are nuclear including three SSBNs).

shukriya sir..

Wasn't it 6 SSBN's and 9 Escort SSN's???
There are a lot of misinterpretation in cyber world. What I understand that 3 Arihant class SSBN are confirmed. Right. Then there is talk of one or two more Arihant class SSBN in defense circles. Follow on Arihant class is going in for 7-9 SSBN. Then there is 2 Akula SSN from Russia. Then there is 6 indigenous SSN for navy. What I understand confusion here that follow on submarine projected no is creating some degree of confusion. If they are building 4-5 Arihant class then follow on order will be reduced to 7 & if not then it will go up-to 9. So in total they are targeting 20 nuclear powered subs in short & mid term(5 to 15 years) if only they don't change their mind again.

shukriya sir..
Please don't say like this. I feel ashamed. I am just a kid(in these circles) aged 22,actually will be 23 on August 31st.

There are talks going on in defense circles to convert some of SSBNs into SSGN to provide target for cruise missiles.
TRISHUL: SSGN Design For Indian Navy

SSGN design is going very well since 2007.

It will weight around 6000 tons similar to Arihant class. I think they will convert some of arihant class in SSGN in later stage.

It will be tube launched, not VLS.

India has two options for cruise missiles.
1-domestic Shourya.
2nd-Israrli IAI With another Rafael.

Indian SSGN will not touch waters before 2017( considering current delay take it to 2019-20).

Well the problem for Chinese is ...it is not one island ..it is an archipelago of thousand islands.

PLAN will opeartaing thousand of miles from its home base in enemy territory.IN will be operation in its own waters with not only CBG air cover..but aircover from land based aircraft.

IN will operating open waters(operating west of Malacca). PLAN will be at its most vulnerable as it will be making it way through ..worlds most tenuous straits.

In naval warfare terms ..a strait is an obvious choke point(like Gibraltor proved to be for German U-boats hoping to enter Atlantic)

Vessel do not have space to maneuver, are easily exposed ..Naval vessels can not maintain their cover ..as all the vessels in the fleet are visible from shore. in short a naval vessel crossing a strait is cannon fodder...if the navy on the otherside in not a friendly one.

There is always the option of going south Of Australia to enter the Indian Ocean.

Also China most likely eventually(2025-2030) have 1-2 aircraft carrier battle groups stationed at all times in the Indian Ocean.

My last comment on this topic is that there is nothing that Indian could ever hope to do to stop the PLAN entering the Indian Ocean if that is what China wants. India is massively weaker, and will be for the next few decades at least, than China.

@ Rising Sun..

Interesting Posts sir.. Thanks...

P-17A will be really interesting as probably the best systems will be going for this.

Even though I disagree with this statement but even if that is the case and stoping PLAN is the goal IN can do a lot with coordination of the Friendly navies.
